So glad I found your video. Opening...I have had every single one of those problems at some point this week. Thank you for keeping it so simple and succinct. My hero of today.
"tunnel centring" is a new term for me and something I could do with practicing - one thing you've not mentioned that I find happens with first-timers using the "pistol" hand shape for opening is that the top edge gets too far out and overhangs and becomes raggedy. I've been using one-thumb-on-top-of-the-other for newbies lately, particularly with children, and this seems to be working better.
Darn, Tim. I haven't seen you online in a long while. I used your videos when I was learning to throw. Now I know why I do it with the wheel spinning so fast. It's because of you! I am constantly being told to slow down now : )
Watched few of these, made a the best pot I've thrown yet. Teacher was laughing and said that if I watch few more videos, I will have made a series of bowls of different shapes and sizes by Monday.
Hahaaa, it's about working your way to be as good as you can, but it is very hard work still. I've made several cracking looking throws too, including a candlestick, which is probably my best, took a degree of focus, to keep the slimmest part symmetrical, I tried to keep making it thinner, but it would have gotten harder, and probably been a disaster, so it's about 6'' tall by about 3/4 of an inch wide, looks pretty darn good though. I'm very pleased with the result.
Your skill...it makes me so jealous. I'm in advanced ceramics/pottery 2, but I had a year off from ceramics between freshman and Junior Year. (Mistake on my part >.
These videos are great. I hope you dont mind that I put a link to your videos on my class homepage, you are very easy to understand! Thank you for posting these!!!!
@AsachikaSan Working on adding links with youtube to make navigating a bit easier to find things. I Have a lot to learn with all the new stuff they brought out.
Great videos! I wish they'd been around when I started. I can tell you learned from your mistakes too! How many times have we tried to re attach a third pulled vase, yet somehow end up with a good looking form?
Wow, my teacher has us jab out thumb in right away and just make a hole right in the middle. I feel like if i start out by kind of flattening it like you did,i'll get better results.
which ribs are you using for what? I've now watched your beginning series and can't tell when you're using the rubber vs the metal rib. Thanks - Irene Great videos, btw.
Dear Tim, when I center the clay respondes well, when I open up I always gets the clay off center, I try to recenter it and start opening it up and then I get lots of air bubbles, no matter how many I pop with meddle there is always a new one! I do wedge the clay before throwing, and I spam the ball to get rid off the wrinkles....don't get why I still get air bubbles! Thanks for your videos....
When I open my form one side is always thicker than the rest and I don't know why. My teacher said it's because I open the form off center, but despite my best efforts it keeps happening. Any advice? I've never heard of that tunnel centering thing before, would that be the way to fix it?
Hey Tim I've been watching your videos and trying to take in all your techniques. The question I have is when you center and open up, you mention beginners sometimes go too far out. That is me recently and I need to practice. If or when I use more clay how do I know when it's too far? Thanks!
That’s normally from you knuckle not being up against the wall. It’s hard to put into words but if you use the pointy part it will cut the clay off rather than displace it.
I don't understand how to recenter the clay when it's open. I always have this problem, my clay always goes off center. I use Laguna clay B-mix. how to do you position your hands?
Jennifer Bueno if you have opened it and it is a little bit off you can "tunnel center". take your hands and make tunnel with them so the clay is being touched all the way from inside to outside. then squeeze so you let the clay move up away from the wheelhead like you would coning up. Then like coning down you push back down repeat till centered or you really screw it up and start over.
Rigid and controlled placement of the of the fingers and hands, at all times, from the very centre, then work your way from the centre to the side as shown yh, otherwise it's buggered. Lol, sh*t, yh ''Let's say it wasn't centred'', it's bad enough when it goes off centre lol, but to centre it again, just do what you did, grab the sides, with tad bit of force, you don't need to cone it up and down, that's pointless, just grab it like you did and the original shape reforms, otherwise you're back to step two, as step one is centering, and step two before shaping is coning, if that's even needed depending on what you're doing. Hell, I've created some results, but I even have mental blockages about where to place my hands, when I know what I want to do. I believe I've got the hang off high coning though (candlestick shaping) if you will, it doesn't haf take some control and concentration though.
