Hey Chuck to continue my background info I stated during the live stream of this video I have little experience I gain when I was at ECPI years ago. I know another guy stated he went to ECPI as well. ECPI is basically a fast track technical school. I sadly didn’t finish my degree. The rest and most recent experience I have is the freelance T-mobile gigs I have been doing the last couple of years off and on, but it was not a Contrator or full time IT job.

I was a 33 year old plumber and started my IT certification journey earlier in the year, my plan was to complete the CompTia pathway and try to get entry level cyber role, I loved the learning and I felt I was wasting my time in my job and I should just try to get into IT and build my skills. Well I did it, after an extensive interview process I've landed a IT Support Engineer role at a cyber company having only ITF and Net+. I recently discovered your channel and I plan to go through it all. Good luck to everyone out there and don't get discouraged and keep fighting.

I think we all deal with some imposter syndrome but I'm happy that I am following a long time dream of mine, I never saw myself growing up being in blue collar work but that's how it ended up and its an honest living but u felt I wasn't living up to my potential and I felt under utilised but I see it as an advantage having seen the real world and gained valuable life experience where as some people IT is all they know. If you want it go for it, you can always fall back on your building if it's not for you. Good luck

Chuck, you are the man. After watching this video and having no IT experience or certifications. I started applying to jobs and finding a way to directly email HR. I explained that I was currently studying for the A+ and even offered to shadowing. They saw how hungry I was to learn, and I got the job as a entry level data center technician. One step closer to the goal. Update: Hey guys, sorry I was not able to respond sooner, I'm currently overseas with the military. Overall, in the civilian sector, things are great mainly because I had the opportunity to work with great people. All i had to do was show interest and ask the right question. You don't need to know everything to create a difference in your work environment. I was never late, never said no when extra work was needed, and took plenty of notes. Made great friends that even at the moment, some of them have reached out to offer me other opportunities. Currently, I'm studying for my security+, and I will try to get into cybersecurity when I get back to the States.

I had worked in phone based customer service before, as well as had repaired computers. What they were most impressed was me giving simple solutions to hypothetical tech issues. For example, mouse not working. What to do? - Just unplug and replug, check if laser is working, try a different mouse etc. They said most other interviewees make it too complicated, thus blowing their chance. They also appreciated my customer service background and people skills. And I took your suggestions about how to make the resume, I think that helped me a lot. Thank you very much for your help. True. A lot of people getting into IT try to get in because they don’t think they’ll be talking to anyone but that’s far from true when it comes to the help desk. As an introvert that’s what I hoped for but I learned to succeed you have to get good at dealing with your clients.

@@emilyau8023 Hey Tangerine 😊. I have found that this is a common complaint with many job positions. There are some job postings that list 0-2 years of experience, however few. I would suggest using any technical/customer support experience which you have gained. Being able to explain in detail technical/customer assistance which you have provided to friends, family, to a religious organization or social group can help better define the "years" of experience.

I gained so much experience in 6months time that management saw how much passion I had helping people and learning the whole IT department that they offered me a promotion to Infrastructure within 6months. I accepted the promotion and now make way more money but the story doesn't end there...I am having freakin fun working in infrastructure as we speak. The key to IT from what I've learned the past 7 months is that I am there to help people get back to work. No matter how high a role you're at you're still bringing customer service to everyone. One other thing to keep in the back of your head starting out in IT, at some point in your IT career you will meet a fork in the road, it will be either becoming an engineer (specialist in a particular sub branch of "IT") or a manager (team manager or project manager) there is some cross pollination in skills for both paths but think about what your strength is in IT and start adding to the skillset that the branch requires.

I've been following you for a while now and hearing a few stories, I wanted to share one of my own. Despite the age of this video. My dream job was to work on videosgames. My path to that wasn't the average path and I'll skip the boring stuff. From school I joined the Marines. Did 10 years, then continued to work in retail as a Store Manager for GameStop (gaming related) and been working part-time on the weekends while still in on active duty. Later on, I managed to break in officially by becoming a tester (QA) and was working in the gaming industry for a few years. Later, I got into software after another contract gig has ended and I tired of the contractual game industry gigs. Software was where it was at, but the company I was with had issue and I was laid off only to get hired back a few months later and laid off again 2 years later. After many other job offers, final interviews, I landed a job in IT because I was familiar with IT and had personal experience with customer service and computer knowledge. It was huge pay cut going rom a Lead QA Engineer to IT Support Specialist, but 3 years later I'm making more now than I was at my last company working on software. Always learning new stuff. Spend most of my time on RU-vid watching IT videos. Getting refreshers on things I use to know and learning things I didn't. Attending IT conferences and etc has helped and yes, if you're great at customer service, that's the most important thing. You may not have an immediate answer, but communication and a great attitude goes a long way.

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I was a cable guy for 2.5 years and needed a change, so I quit and worked on my side business, but it wasn’t for me. I started studying for my A+ around May, and had the idea in my mind I HAD to have my A+ before applying, but when you said just put “working towards A+” on my Resume, that was a turning point. I applied to a Help Desk position, and after 2 interviews my first day is tomorrow. Plus, I just passed my 1001 today. I’m making less than a dollar off my cable job without having to climb poles and now have opportunities to get paid to learn. So my advice is study for about a week or so to get the basic concepts of IP, DNS, DHCP (you might be asked in an interview if you are familiar with them)and search/study help desk interview questions, then start applying to every help desk listing you can! You don’t NEED A+ to get hired. I looked at the comments on this video about a month ago (I started applying early July) and they gave me the inspiration to push on and now I have a job! Apply! Apply! Apply! All it takes is 1 company to give you a shot! Good luck everyone!

I've worked as a service advisor on and off for the past 10 years, I decided to move on from that to working in IT as its something I have always put off and today I got my job offer to work network technical support for Spectrum and their commercial customers with nothing on my resume but that customer service experience in an advisor role and a passion for technology. Thank you for taking off that weight of "I gotta know everything about everything" before jumping in.

Starting on a help desk led to my career today as a software engineer. I will say help desk is super underrated like you said. Once on a help desk team, usually there is tons of room to learn and grow!

How do you get in, kindly? What was your path?

@@seetsamolapo5600 I spent about two weeks reading about pc support and email things and just started applying places. Once I got in I started focusing more on programming and learning linux.

@@GlassFamFishing many many thanks. I've just found the Google IT support course here on RU-vid and will do exactly as you did. Was studying for the AWS associate architect exam but realised the SA job is not an entry job - although knowledge from that will be useful, networking, security etc. Thanks again 🙏

@@seetsamolapo5600 SA is a great start too! Currently now I’m a senior SRE and I’ve come across many people that didn’t start from HD or didn’t come from a software background. Learning a cloud provider like AWS or GCP and becoming familiar with the services they provide and tools like terraform, chef, ansible, puppet and kubernetes are all great things to set you up for success at an entry level SA or SRE role.

Man I reallllllllllly wish I wasn’t annoyed as much as I am with completely unnecessary mouth noises because then I would actually be able to watch AND listen to this video. This is literally the only video online I have found that is seemingly speaking directly to me and I really need this kind of information and advice. :(

I am sure you will never see this message, but I just wanted to let you know that you motivated me to go throw out my applications, even though I had no prior experience. I just landed my first tier, one technician helpdesk spot, and I never thought it was possible. They actually required me to have an associates degree, which I did not have. But I did have customer service experience and they said I was able to communicate very well. Thank you again for giving me the motivation to going out there and just trying to apply, because it actually worked.

It's not too late at all. I'm in my mid 30s, been working fast food and construction all my life, a year ago I decided to learn programming and basic CS. I have an interview for an IT Help Desk job tomorrow.

Scored my first IT job with this advice. It’s very possible to get in at a good place with little to no IT experience. I worked as a retail manager for 3 years, and did my associate’s degree on the side. I don’t have my certifications yet. For those who want to know, my interview was based on my customer service experience, my troubleshooting experience, and my ability to teach other people how things work and solving problems through analytical methods more generally. If you can dream it, you can do it!

It all depends like you say. I am a tier 2 tech for the corporation I work for and I have to make network design maps that get sent to contractors which I then work with to install and configure equipment for all of our new retail locations. Our tier 1 guys have to know a lot. Much of it can be taught but I have had several guys that are just not a good fit for the tech field even though they are great customer service. They can talk all day but when it come time to troubleshoot and fix issues they struggle. You may be able to get the job but then you have to really want to learn and master the material. Again all companies are different in regards to the expectations for the help desk but I'm just giving the alternate experience here where it isn't always the entry level experience you think it will be.

The amount of jobs I've found for helpdesk or first line support recently that want certain quals and IT experience is phenomenal. In most cases you won't get past HR filters without meeting that criteria. :( The people who have these quals and experience inevitably leave for the job they're qualified for.

I just recently came across your channel and I just want to say thank you. This video is still impacting lives. I'm not your traditional student as I am approaching 50 years of age. My daughter just graduated college. Anyway long story short I decided to make a career change of sorts. I got my first official it job and it help desk. Actually I've had some experience with this in the past with other jobs in an unofficial capacity. Thank you and I appreciate your videos and your practical advice. Or never too late to start and continue on this journey.
