This is a video to answer a question about my other video " Western Saddling Tips" If you have any question feel free to "like" Remount Horsemanship on Facebook and ask away.one of the most basic fundamentals of foundation work with horses is having them stand still. By themselves while you groom, saddle, fly spray etc. it is very easy but sometimes takes time to do it. Take the time to do it right.

this was beautiful to watch, definitely going to improve my saddling, though my saddle is a treeless so it folds if I hold it like this, I tend to find also if I put my pad on first it's nearly impossibe to get right than if I do both at the same time (my horse also figits a lot of the time when tied- she aboslutely can stand still but gets very aggitated if she's on her own being asked to be tied after coming away from her friends).

I don't bother to tie my horse for any of his grooming including any clipping I want to do. I didn't bother to even put his halter on the first time I put a saddle on or to use tack to mount him the first time. Although he's a stallion I can work under him right next to a mare in season without putting his halter on. He's not a quiet horse by any stretch of the imagination but we have excellent communication and cooperation.

My horse moves around a lot when she's tied to her stall. She is starting to stand a little better, but the second she sees me with the saddle pad or saddle she gets very antsy and sometimes rears up. Any pointers?

Sounds like your horse is anxious to begin with. I’d start with some relaxation work first and getting her relaxed. Please visit www.patreon.com/remounthorsemanship for many many more videos. And I’d focus especially on the colt starting videos.

My horse nips and stomps her feet when i tighten the girth, but what i will take away from thin video is that to tighten the girth to keep the saddle on.

I am 68 and 5'2". It is hard to swing my saddle up on my horse as you suggested. She gets fidgety when she sees the saddle coming. What else can I try? 8:00 am.

If a horse gets fidgety with the saddle coming towards them when they otherwise stand calm I might work on gaining that horse’s confidence with the saddle. Maybe slowing way down, letting her sniff it, get to know it then when she’s standing still work on saddle. I understand the height and age dilemma, there is nothing wrong getting the saddle halfway up with the stirrup on the offside then pushing it the rest of the way, adjusting pad etc then cinch up. But this would come after she stands still and is confident with the saddle. www.Patreon.com/remounthorsemanship

@remounthorsemanship6592 I tried this yesterday and it worked. I did practice several times, on and off, without riding. She did great. Thank you!

My horse Lily will stand perfectly fine for brushing and grooming, she'll even fall asleep. I can put the pad and saddle on but as soon as I reach for the cinch she starts walking forward.

It could be as simple as breaking the habit by picking up on the lead a few times or standing a bit more in front of her of her driveline to stop her forward motion and break the habit.

I would like to do this with my horse. What if the horse starts drifting away or eats grass, and keeps moving?
@remounthorsemanship6592
@remounthorsemanship6592 7 лет назад
Hey RG If your horse moves off or starts eating grass first I'd try redirecting his mind back to me by maybe a bump on the lead rope, stepping into his space and moving him a step. Do something to get his attention back on you. If it keeps up then move his feet a little more than he wanted too then let him have his rest at the saddle while you saddle him. Make the wrong thing (moving off) difficult (by moving his feet more than he wanted) and the right thing (standing still) easy.

Sir, thank you so much for the prompt response to my query. I will start working on my horse today. If you ever have a clinic in Las Vegas, NV, I would like to be a part of it. Thanks again!

So, if I have my horse do some work and he still nervously moves around being tied up - then what?
@remounthorsemanship6592
@remounthorsemanship6592 3 года назад
Few things to try. Nothing is set in stone with horses. If he’s tied and moves around a lot and paws then untie him and move him around some more so that tied becomes a good relax spot to maybe chill and catch his breath. Put a hay bag up for him. Tie him and every time he paws or nervously moves around toss a Little Rock at the ground at his feet or make some noise to give him a mental direct and think about something else other than his buddies etc. sometimes letting them stand tied and work through issues can help. Let him do his thing until he’s quiet then untie him. Untie him when he’s calm and thinking away. Bottom line cause the tying to be a good restful relaxing spot and by allowing that to be easy and everything else to be difficult. Clear as mud right??
