"i'm using 6011 so I should be able to weld dirt to it" my favorite quote so far. Love the channel, keep the videos coming!
@canyonrunner
@canyonrunner 2 года назад
I wouldn’t have even bothered to knock the flux off the weld for an emergency repair! Your technique and skill shine through even through the bad emergency situation. For non structural, 6011. For general use 6011 or 7018. One needs to trust the knowledge and skill of the welder to properly select. If it worked, it was a success! Clean up your field mess and move on! Job done!

Classic roadside repair with all the luxuries. It reminds me of a weld repair I saw my father do once. Back in the late 60's we did a trip around Australia and were in the mid north of WA when the tow coupling on the caravan broke apart. The roads were miserable with coregations and it was a good 170 miles back into somewhere with electricity {between Newman and Wittenoom from memory}. Not wanting to abandon the van in the desert Dad repaired the coupling by welding it back together. We didn't have a welder, rods, grinder or a generator other than what was on the Patrol. He managed to file a weld prep and used some thick wire coat hangers wrapped up with newspaper hooked up to 3 12 volt batteries in series. He used the jumper leads with the clamp as the stinger. That improvised rod welded that cast steel trailer coupling back together so well that there was no apparent bend on it when we got to a welder and much further still until he was able to source another coupling in Broome. Nice job

As a retired welder and welding inspector my hats off to your dad. I have used coat hangers to gas weld an exhaust pipe but never tackled cast iron with it. And rumor has it that newspaper was the very first gas shield used in arc welding.

Your dad sounds like the original Macgyver! Hats off to him!
@dazaspc
@dazaspc 3 года назад
@@billietyree6139 Im pretty sure it was cast steel not iron. I also wouldn't be surprised if the coat hangers hadn't been made from war surplus welding wire as a lot of stuff like that went on post war in Australia. He wasn't a welder by trade though he was a Diesel Mechanic.

I noticed you referred that jack by its proper name: "HANDYMAN"! I grew up on a farm with one of those. They were "handy"; they pulled posts, stretched wire fencing, straightened bent frames, served as winches (a little slow!), etc. But they were dangerous! Ever have one 'runaway' when going down? The handle would go crazy as the jack ratcheted down on its own. Dad taught me early to have a healthy respect for that jack, and NEVER trust it.

Hope you get this on such an old video. I used to work at a welder repair shop. One guy brought one in like yours but a Miller. He had a angle iron piece welded to the front with a nut welded to that. With a very long like one inch bolt in it. I asked what that was for. He said he sometimes very on steep inclines. That is to help level his welder out so it runs right. Also said. I do not bolt the welder down, just use straps so it comes out faster. That bolt is to bring it back to level. Cool beans. That is you an idea Paul. I know, more jobs to do.
