Instead of buying a bull, you could consider hiring a bull, so you bring him in for a few months and he gets the deed done. that way you can keep your genetics diverse while you still have a small herd by getting a different bull each year.
@rivitraven

Yes, most cattle farmers do this, in addition bulls can be literal BULLies towards the rest of the herd too and pose a risk due to agression, to the health of the entire herd.

I love that exchange at 14:50. Toby's look at Audrey as he realises she does not look happy about him being between her and her child, the defusing side glances, and finally the retreat. Every time you talk about Toby and the cows I think to myself, "Of course they accept him, he's just a little white highlander to them." Then I laugh cause I know that they understand he is something different then them but he is about calf size and has that fluffy white coat. Anyways, awesome video as always.

Morgan you should tag those goslings that have the Angel wing so you don't breed them. At this point you know it's pretty likely it's genetic so if you tag their legs now you can take them out of your breeding flock later instead of tryingto guess which ones they are later.
@goldengryphon
@goldengryphon 2 года назад
And try to monitor the potential moms. That needs to be stopped sooner than later. Bad genes are a problem.
@at243

What I would be doing if I was him after separating those females, I would do a dna test for each of the remaining adults from the breeding flock, except the male that he brought from someone with the angel wing, that definitely was a very wrong move, even worse if he allowed him to breed with his birds.. If he still has that male with angel wing, he should get rid off it, and start from scratch with the remaining birds after the dna test.. I also don't recommend him breeding any of these gooselings unless he do a dna test for them too, to know which ones are brothers and sisters to avoid getting more future birds with abnormalities due to inbreeding.

@@randomname7918 being cruel and processing them for consumption doesn't have to be the same thing. I see cruelty as physically abusing animals, not looking after their health and not feeding them adequately or nutritionally. Be careful to cross with Charolais, big calves for your little highlands, may end in complications/ needing vet assistance or c-sec… as well will lead to leaner meat, good cross but may not be the best for curing, I personally think angus may be a better choice, smaller frame so less likely issues at delivery and will improve fat infiltration in the meat what means tastier jerky

Morgan if you still have a problem with the eggs rolling out of the duckhouse, then cut a piece of wood in half diagonally and place it in the doorway, so when the birds lay eggs in the doorway, the eggs just rolls inwards.

I think maybe he should also try attaching small-ish board pieces kind of like horizontal ridges or strips on/across the ramps, at least for the chickens like in the mobile coop, so they have something to grip onto and don't risk injuring themselves quite so much when coming down the ramp even if it's raining and slippery. That's how the ramps out of the coop into the chicken yard were when my family had chickens when I was younger. ^-^ I've been meaning to suggest that for a while now, but kept forgetting to actually comment it!!!

I must say that this channel is one of the most informational and enjoyable channels on RU-vid I have learned more from Morgan Gold Shaw, than I have reading books, or research online. I would like to add something about the condition of angel wing in waterfowl because the same exact conditions that his Goslings suffer from, Ducks will as well. They have the same exact nutritional requirements & a diet of anything lacking in these requirements, will result in a condition, that is always extreme & easily noticeable. For example, bowed legs & the angel wing,, as it progresses, becomes a different type of condition, it causes of behavior where the bird just drops its wings to the ground and is constantly trying to pull it's wings into place it looks like a nervous tic or some sort of nerve damage condition, it's always twitching the Wings up, trying to get them into place ....constantly.. When they get older, the solution I have found,, is to ensure they receive plenty of niacin, which is in the vitamin B family & this can be found in: sunflower seeds, Raw, unsalted, pumpkin or some type gourd seeds,black oil sunflower, brewer's yeast & finely chopped alfalfa, which is amazing stuff , are all very good sources of niacin Calcium is important to prevent the bowed leg defect. As soon as I started incorporating these things into my duck"s diet the problem corrected itself the calcium corrected the bowed legs nice and corrected the angel wing did you catch the problem early enough when the bird is Young and can be corrected through diet without it leaving residual damage later on in life. A comment about the cross bill deformity is also called scissor beak I had three ticks born with that in The Most Extreme presentation of this condition I've ever seen in my life a friend of mine had one hatch from hatching eggs that I gave her so she could have her own backyard flock and she loves them and she's very happy there's another whole nother story it is such a cute story I swear to God is going to see Destroyer I'll talk later some other time you know I should tell it on my channel anyways she gave hers to a sanctuary where she would get one-on-one care with one person I have a sanctuary situation but it is so much work and a hatchery and a farm a lumber-jacking work site a livingsoil farm an eating and hatching eggs shipping thing going and there's more . I have had a lot of ducklings dying just dropping dead I'm not doing anything different than I've done in Prior years where I would get over 20 ducklings surviving to adulthood here they only live a few days and drop dead the deformed chicks have all these different deformities and after acting they become so exhausted just trying to survive they die this is our big chicks are actually very strong and active I have to ensure that they have containers that they can actually really drink from and their food is either semi-moist or very fine and put into a deeper container I'm accommodating them so that it makes it easier for them to survive on their own but the frequency of deformed chicks and the frequency of the ducklings dying within 3 to 4 days of hatching dying in the shell dying while partially emerged is really vexing me so I'm taking I took two of the little bodies and I wrapped them up and I put them in a freezer unit and I'm going to be shipping them same-day priority on Ice I have to pack them in ice to University of California at Davis which is a leading agricultural School in California and probably the United States and my family that are involved with farming and ranching where are the breeding raisings animals we send or bring our animals that pass away from unexplained circumstances to uc-davis to the veterinary pathology laboratory for necropsy and by doing this we learn what we did wrong or what happened or how we can prevent it from happening in the future or to the rest of the other members of the herd or flock that was probably one of the best things that my late husband and I ever did together what ship are hens that died prematurely in mysterious ways it's actually to the California Department of food and agriculture which is located on the UC Davis Campus the knowledge that is gained from doing this is so invaluable that I am actually starting to write a book about it how a primal diet even for chickens and waterfowl is so much better and essential and the results are so extreme in a beneficial way that I have before and after pictures they have people asking me about the ingredients to the Primal waterfowl and poultry diet I just imagine trying to mimic what they would be searching for to eat and consuming if they were foraging in the field and forest or a shoreline l a body of waterwhich,

Before you decide to use your own fields for hay, walk all through it and even do a check with your drone for poisonous plants. Yes it was a Farm for many many years but birds, animals and winds bring in new plants. A friend of mine in PA decide to hire someone to bale her field to offset the cost of winter hay. Almost as soon as he started he stopped and called her to come look at it. He found Hemlock and Larkspur growing around the sides and lots of clover. While clover isn't a poison per say, eating a lot of it can cause bloat which can kill. Both Hemlock, and Larkspur are poisonous to cattle. She also found a couple of Milkweed and I think it was wild Cherry tree saplings. Using what you have is fantastic but take the time to make sure it's still safe to use first.

Bully advice: You don't have enough cows to financially justify a bull - not even close, no matter the market. Also, if you think putting in a handling system to get AI done is a lot of work and expense, wait untill you find out the handling infrastructure you need to have a bull on the property! They are WAY different than cows in both behaviour and power and need much beefier (pun intended!) fences. You'll want the handling system for vaccinations, health checks, hoof trimming etc anyway.

It’s not two reasons, it’s one reason that’s multi-factorial. Genetics makes it possible to happen, and diet can trigger it to occur. You have other birds in that group with mild drops that are less severe, but still showing the AW sign. Best practice is graze only dawn to dusk and pellet feed at night especially during those weeks where the flight pins are growing out fast.

@@apolloclouds you won’t be able to tell them apart when they grow up, and you don’t want bad genetics for future generations

All of these gooselings should actually end up and the freezer for he doesn't know which gooselings are from which pair. Unless he does a dna test to find out the related ones, to avoid getting more deformed birds due to inbreeding.

Wow! Some of the trees in your orchard are really beginning to fill in. It won’t be long before they provide shade and maybe even nuts. Your farm is a beautiful work in progress.

Out of my depth here, cause English isn't my first language, I don't mind "let loose the goose". It's like you release the energy of the goose flock, rather than 20 individual geese. I like it. 👍

Molly is bringing you gifts! My indoor cat had an outdoor friend that would leave birds for him at the door. There was a crack at the threshold of the door that they communicated through. Lol. Inefficient practically but most efficient for cat amore! Lol

My dog is best friends with one of my cats. They often sleep together, which is so sweet. Their playing can sometimes look like fighting and a bit scary, but they are being careful. But with the dog being four times bigger, I always leave him in the bedroom without the cats when I leave the house, because they are afterall animals and accidents can happen. And I'd rather be there if something happens. Like the dog can accidentally nip the cat too hard, the cat could get spooked and scratch the dog in the face etc. But overall they would never hurt eatch other on purpose. The other cats like to rub again the doggo too, but he realizes that they don't want to play with him.

Morgan, you are so good to your animals and you pay attention so well through all of them and you notice when somethings not right with any of the animals and especially the babies. It’s amazing that you can fix those wings so quickly. I know it was so hard to say goodbye to the little gosling with the Crossbill, but I also know you made sure he went to a WONDERFUL♥️Home!! It’s wonderful to know that there are people out there who are willing to take a disabled or a different animal and love it as if it was perfect and give it all that special loving treatment it needs. I love your videos & The stories you tell with each of them. I can’t believe how big the Calves are getting. You really are a good farmer Morgan😊❣️❣️😄❣️❣️😊❣️❣️😊❣️ PS how soon do you think you will begin working on the hoop building?
