[Helping Hand #38] "Frostbite" by CloverPhoenix // Review 

Welcome to the new series on my channel, in which I will look at and review some overlooked or unrated levels, with the goal of helping the creators in getting them rated in the end.

Back with another review and this time we are looking at something I haven't covered on the channel yet as much yet, as todays project is a 1.9 GDPS level by various creators. I am usually not the biggest fan of those levels, but I still wanted to showcase this, as I was really surprised by the quality of it and the fact that it didn't get much attention yet.
Like most 1.9 GDPS levels, the visuals are focused on designs and pulses, with only very few parts going beyond that, by adding little effects to the mix. The theming is really nicely done in my opinion, I really enjoyed the overall visuals a lot. As for most GDPS levels, the designs in this are really nice and unique for the limitations they use, with all of them holding up very well in terms of quality. I really don't think there is a part that I would consider feeling outdated, though the first part could have used some more dynamic elements like pulses in my opinion. The last part is also more on the simpler side, but I think it works really well with the song, which I always appreciate. The whole level is really good at that in my opinion, the song is being represented very nicely and the level feels vibrant and fresh, due to the well used colors and pulses throughout its runtime.
The gameplay has some issues in my opinion though. Due to the limitations of the editor, a lot of the gameplay features skillbased elements like ship and wave parts, which I usually don't really mind. For me this made the gameplay very unbalanced and in parts frustrating though. Both ships at 0:12 and 0:42 felt a lot harder than the rest of the level and the 0:33 wave was also pretty difficult for me. I would suggest adjusting the difficulty of those parts a bit to ensure the levels difficulty is properly balanced. Another thing I wanna point out is the wave to ship transition at 0:30 which I also really disliked. I think this could have been avoided by moving the ship portal a bit, so the wave can't die to the bottom structures. In the way it is layouted now, the transition becomes really inconsistent sadly. The rest of the gameplay is really fun though, I enjoyed it a lot. Only those points mentioned above brought down the enjoyment a bit for me.
Overall though, I think this level is really well made and definitely deserves more attention in the future. 1.9 GDPS creators have been improving a lot in recent years, so seeing this only makes the future for them more interesting. I really like how this level is presented visually, I think the designs are great and the overall theming has been executed very well. Only the gameplay had some flaws for me, but those could be fixed easily in the future to make it more enjoyable. I definitely think this should get a rate on the live servers, I would personally send this for a feature rating, even though it might just receive a rate in the end. Still super cool and interesting product and I am looking forward to checking out some more GDPS levels in the future. Well done!
