It's a illness unfortunately. Even if they don't want to, it's a compulsion much like a drug addiction. I hope she gets the help she needs to not rehoard

Depression probably unfortunately

My mom was a hoarder. It’s definitely a mental illness and is a compulsive behavior that provides a sense of comfort to the hoarder. It becomes overwhelming and the person feels powerless to fix it and often don’t want to because parting with things that seem meaningless others is extremely difficult for them. Taking over a cleaning out their house without getting them treatment will often cause them to start hoarding again. I hadn’t seen my mom in a year and a half because the hoarding was getting pretty bad. She went to the ER fit a fall on a Wednesday, got diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer in a Friday and my brother and I had her removed from a ventilator on Sunday. The conditions she was living in were heartbreaking. She was hoarding food, books (especially cook books), newspapers, bills and baby toys she had for my son when we visited. (We live 1,200 miles apart). When she died we went straight to her house to start cleaning stuff out because my uncle was chomping at the bi to sell my grandma’s house. It took us eight days to collect everything. For those who make fun of this condition, it is utterly heartbreaking, and families feel absolutely helpless. It’s hard for everyone involved.

It's starts with Depression then leads to Idgaf. Nervous Breakdowns can also trigger hoardarism.

I used to have a spotless house...then my health started going downhill. I ended up losing my 4 kids (2 with their dad now and 2 with family). I tried getting help with keeping up with the house so it took the strain of my mobility. Social took me to court and won. I pretty much didn't get out bed for 6 weeks. I'd literally get out to get a little food/drink and deal with the animals. Some days I wouldnt eat, some days I'd binge, got into loads of debt because didn't bother paying bills, made numerous attempts on my life. Even now I can't back on top of things...its too overwhelming 😢
