Organizing student materials is a must if you want your students to be able to function independently in the classroom. There’s nothing worse than asking a student to get materials out and they have no idea where they are. In today’s video, I share how I help my students stay organized.

This is probably wayyyy late. I used folders. The students had three folders but only two at a time. One was for long term assignments, writing, unit work, anything that took more than one week. These were usually the items that I was going to grade. The other two folders rotated. Friday, the students turned in the previous week folders and received the next week's folder. Then we would spend ten minutes or so passing out the following week's papers. Spelling, vocab, grammar, weekly math work, any binder paper, white paper, notebook pages for the following week, and quick writes, they would need. The group was responsible for making sure any absent student's work would get into their folder. The students would get a grade for these assignments but it was more a check to make sure they were completed. By having two folders, I could grade one the following week and the students would still have a folder to use. The longer assignments got more attention. When it was time to turn these in, the entirety of the assignment ie rubric, self or peer graded and then improved upon, notes, steps to solved, failed attempts, rough, and final, would be stapled together. I would create a folder for that assignment with the class list. The students would highlight there name on their assignment and their name on the folder. Then I could quickly see whose paper was not turned in by checking highlighted names and it helped names be on the papers.

That's a really interesting way to do it! I like the idea of rotating folders every week.

I’m looking for a video to show me how to teach my son himself how to be organized in class. He loses important papers and he can’t find his books. He forgets things. There must be a way that I can teach him to organize his paperwork in a special place and keep his class materials organized. To get him to write things down so that he remembers.

Try color coding his subjects and talk with his teacher. Sometimes when the teacher knows that it’s something you’re working on at home, they can help out in the classroom.
