Verkkosaari (also known as Nätholmen in Swedish) is a residential area within Kalasatama, located along the Vanhankaupunginselkä waterfront in eastern Helsinki. It forms part of the Kalasatama district, along with the southern Sörnäistenniemi, Suvilahti, and the central Kalasatama tower block area. Verkkosaari is bordered by Työpajankatu to the south, Vanha talvitie to the west, and Verkkosaarenkuja to the north, which marks the beginning of Hermanninranta. The entire Kalasatama area belongs to the Sörnäinen neighborhood. Verkkosaari was originally part of Sörnäisten satama (Sörnäinen harbor) and industrial land, but residential development began in the 2010s after the port activities ceased. When completed, Verkkosaari will be a residential area with approximately 6,000 residents, including restaurants and services. Construction is progressing from the southern part of the area toward the north, both for housing and street development. The overall completion target is 2028. Historically, the Verkkosaari environment was sea bottom, gradually filled in since the 1840s. The original shoreline ran along Hermannin rantatie, and Verkkosaari initially consisted of two adjacent islands: the northern Iso Verkkosaari and the southern Pieni Verkkosaari. These islands were initially used as summer pastures for cattle transported there by boat. In 1888, a steam sawmill was established on Iso Verkkosaari, and by the turn of the century, a wooden bridge connected the island to the mainland. The sawmill buildings burned down in 1928, but sawmill operations continued on a smaller scale until the 1950s. Over time, the islands were connected by a narrow land bridge, and in the 1930s, further land reclamation work joined them to the mainland. By the 1960s, Verkkosaari and Sörnäistenniemi were fully connected. The nearby Kyläsaari, once a separate island, was also joined to the mainland and now belongs to the Hermanni neighborhood. After Sörnäisten satama moved to the newly completed Vuosaari harbor in November 2008, Kalasatama began transforming into a residential and service area. In 2009, the old container terminal building on Verkkosaari became the autonomous Social Center Satama, which the city rented to squatters.
Kalasatama (Finnish: kɑlɑˌsɑtɑmɑ; Swedish: Fiskehamnen, literally translated as “fish port”) is a neighborhood in the city of Helsinki, Finland. It is one of the largest construction areas in Helsinki, with the first residents moving in during autumn 2012. The Kalasatama area was previously used for industrial and port purposes since the late 1800s, but the port was relocated to Vuosaari at the end of 2008. Kalasatama is being developed into a diverse urban area with approximately 30,000 residents and over 10,000 jobs. The neighborhood features a mix of housing, public art, streets, parks, and a six-kilometer-long waterfront trail as it continues to evolve.
