Vuosaari (in Swedish, Nordsjö) is a district, basic district, and suburb located on the shores of the sea in Eastern Helsinki. It covers an area of approximately 17.07 square kilometers, making it the largest district in Helsinki. Vuosaari is home to extensive outdoor recreation areas, including Uutela, Meri-Rastila, Kallahdenniemi, and Mustavuori. In 1966, it was incorporated into Helsinki from the former rural municipality of Vantaa, resulting in Vantaa losing almost its entire coastline. As of the end of 2020, Vuosaari had a population of 38,961 residents, with 68.7% Finnish or Sámi speakers, 4.5% Swedish speakers, and 26.8% speakers of other languages. The district is divided into several sub-areas, with significant residential populations in Keski-Vuosaari, Kallahti, Meri-Rastila, Rastila, Aurinkolahti, Uutela, Niinisaari, Nordsjön kartano, and Mustavuori. Vuosaari offers a glimpse of Helsinki’s future, with its abundant natural beauty, seashores, and outdoor spaces.
Aurinkolahti (meaning “Sunny Bay” in Finnish, and Solvik in Swedish) is a young and fast-growing sub-neighbourhood of the East Helsinki district of Vuosaari. It is situated southward, along the coastline from the central Vuosaari area. The original name of this area was Mustalahti (“Black Bay”), but for marketing reasons, it was renamed to Aurinkolahti. The construction of residential buildings and low-rise houses in Aurinkolahti began in 2000 and continues to this day. When completed, the area is expected to house around 7,000 residents. One of its key features is the urban living experience right by the sea. Aurinkolahti boasts a 600-meter sandy beach, the longest in Helsinki, and a scenic beach boulevard with small boat harbors. The streets in the area are named after the sun, weather, roses, and old villas, contributing to the appeal of living here. However, some critics have raised concerns about valuable waterfront areas being used for construction. To the east and southeast of Aurinkolahti lies Uutela Peninsula, which features a large outdoor park. Additionally, the Uutela Canal area has been developed between Uutela and Aurinkolahti. Notably, when the Paulig coffee factory relocated from Aurinkolahti to the nearby Vuosaari Harbor, the construction of the Coffee Quarter began in its place.
Uutela is the largest and most naturally diversified recreational area in East Helsinki. It’s a nature park surrounded by the sea on three sides, making it one of Helsinki’s best-preserved nature parks. Visitors from all over the Helsinki capital area come to explore its rugged glaciated rock formations, coastal scenes bordered by flood meadows and alder trees, forests, marshlands, old summer houses, and the historically significant features and grazing lands of Skata Farm. You can reach Uutela by taking the subway to Vuosaari and then either walking or taking bus 90K. If you’re interested in exploring the area, the Uutela Nature Trail offers a two-kilometer path through the Uutela forest nature reserve.
Vuosaari Harbour (in Finnish, Vuosaaren satama, and in Swedish, Nordsjö hamn) is a seaport facility located in Helsinki, Finland. It was opened in November 2008 and serves as a crucial hub for unitized cargo traffic, including containers, RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) traffic, and project loads. The port collaborates closely with shipping companies, port operators, transport operators, and other logistics partners to create an efficient framework for port operations. Notably, Vuosaari Harbour has excellent transport connections both by sea and land. By sea, it offers access to the main road network via the Ring III road. On land, large-scale rail transport is facilitated by the port railway, which connects directly to Vuosaari Harbour’s quays and terminals. The port area is managed by four port operators: Finnsteve, Multi-Link Terminals, Rauanheimo, and Steveco. Additionally, the gatehouse at Vuosaari Harbour is currently the 25th tallest building in Finland.
