Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back!
Today I’m tackling hemming shorts in two ways.
The first way is a standard hem. I’ll show you how to do it with a serger or with a standard sewing machine.
The second hem will show you how to preserve a special cuff or decorative border.
I used a couple of special tools in this video and here are some links for where you can learn more about them and purchase, if you’d like.
CHALK HOLDER AND CHALK: amzn.to/3vyDYxi
FRIXION PENS ERASABLE: amzn.to/4aex53f
TRAVEL IRON: amzn.to/3TRZVR7
JUKI MO-1000 SERGER: amzn.to/49wdYRb
(This serger is higher-end, with easy threading technology and other great features, which also means it’s higher price. There are certainly less expensive sergers on the market but this is the one we use for a high volume sewing workshop)
I hope this tutorial helps you and, until next time, stay crafty!!

Thank you for showing how to hem the shorts with the border. I've wondered how to do that without removing the border, which I can never put back properly. Glad you had a lovely cruise.

Great video. Thank you for including two examples for achieving the same outcome. Even though I'm a beginner sewer, it would be really cool to see more clothing alteration videos. THX.

Thank you Tim. My mom left me a serger that she never attempted to use. I must get it out of the box this summer and give it a go. I bought the iron after you suggested it a while back. I like it for little jobs.

Take the time to learn your serger, especially how to thread it. That’s to most frustrating part.

Very handsome and elegant too!! Thx for the tips, I will have to look into a serger, maybe pre-owned first? We shall see. Thanks for the video, Tim and Happy Crafting to you too 😎 Diane from Long Island

Pre-owned is a great option for a serger. You can usually find them with very few miles on them because they can be intimidating and people often buy them and stop using them after the first time a thread breaks. Definitely spend some time learning to thread your serger and you will be ready to go!!

I sincerely hope that both of you had an amazing time on your cruise! 🎉 I have a question about the server tails, I’ve always been told to either stitch them down or take a large eyed needle and thread them into the serged area. I was told that if I didn’t do this that they’d come undone. I noticed that you cut yours off when you were done. Do you have any issues with them coming undone? Is threading them through necessary? Thank you in advance!

Good question. Yes and no. I hope that makes sense. If you thread them through you’re really safe. But I’ve seldom had anything unravel. Plus, I went back and sewed the standard hemmed shorts with a straight stitch machine, which secured it. If I was being the best teacher and leading by example, I would have secured them better each time.
