I know we all have our personal opinions and feelings regarding the two types of dialysis treatments, but these are mine based on everything I have learned and gone through. Thank you for this video I was just told today that I need to start dialysis soon and it was hard and overwhelming to hear. I'm only 20 years old and feel like I'm dying. Everything happened so quick. But loved your videos. Definitely gave me alot of useful information 🤗

Quick note - The person at 1:06 has a GRAFT - the small tube that was inserting during minor surgery that takes 2 weeks to heal. The pic at 1:25 is a FISTULA...when the person's own artery and vein is connected. As she mentioned the fistula will last longer (won't give out) as quickly as the graft because it's an organic connection. The reason I am pointing this out because of the difference in the way each of them look. The fistula is the one that can swell like the one AT THE 1:25 mark. Also the name of the fluid that cleans your blood is called Dialysate (pronounced DI-AL-I-SATE).

Congratulations. Amazing video! Very well made and informative. Thanks for sharing. My treatment team tells me that the drain pains will eventually go away. Did it ever go away for you? For me they last sometimes 20 minutes and it feels like I am having birthing pains! It is awful.

You're welcome and thank you so much for watching!! It really means a lot! 💚 Yes, the drain pains are horrible. They did last a longer time when I first started but it eventually went down to only lasting 2 to 3 min. I use to think that my body would never be able to handle the pain and it made me second guess if PD was the right choice but overtime I felt like my body grew a tolerance for it and they become easier to manage. The pain never fully went away but it drastically dropped since the beginning. I hope that they get better for you!!💚

I’ll be getting my pd surgery this week , and start dialysis for the first time do you feel better once you start dialysis treatment because my creatinine levels are very high and I have a lot of symptoms from my kidney failure. I know I won’t feel 100% but if I can feel at least better so I can enjoy my life more

Be mindful of every detail. Including the type of catheter for peritoneal dialysis. I had no fistula !!!!! A PRESTERNAL Catheter. Not that thing in your tummy , it’s called a BATH CATH or PRESTERNAL CATH. I CANT TELL YOU ENOUGH how much better it is for PD. I hated hemo I never could handle it well. I got sick 🤢 everyday. I knew all my dialysis buddies. I never got depressed I was there to try to cheer people up. I pretended it was my job. But I went to PD and researched everything. That PRESTERNAL cath saved me !!!! I just tucked it in my bra. Not the tummy rubbing , or taping n pain. Please look into this. I now have had my daughters kidney 9 years. We’re both great. It was so long ago , except for the pills I forget ….weak stomach muscles. Being cut for transplant. But I wouldn’t trade that gift for anything. For your own good choose a non steroidal hospital. The steroids are not needed. !!!!!!! Mayo , Johns Hopkins and others are non steroidal. I did and have some major effects. Also since I went to PD I wouldn’t let anyone put a fistula in me. I’d of never used it. Remember check out PRESTERNAL cath y’all 💚💚💚💚💚

I’m on hemo dialysis I also started in the day shift and I wasn’t having it to many ppl to all over the place till one day one of the nurses told me why I didn’t try out the nocturnal shift and I could say it was the best thing I did not as many patients nd no one was all over the place it’s so calm the only con is that I do 5 hrs but that’s bc the machine is out to a lower speed which they said was better for the heart and not feeling drained after treatment I’ve been doing nocturnal for 4 yrs now and I would not trade it for day shift

Wow already 4 hours! You really are a WARRIOR! Even though I hated waking up early, I would rather have 3am like I did than mid afternoon. I do like my privacy and not having a lot going on around me so switching to PD and being at home was just much better for me.

Question: can you still workout (intensive cardio/ weight training) while on PD?

I tried to workout while I was on PD but it got to a point where my blood pressure was so low that just going from sitting to standing I would feel like I would pass out. Also my body stopped producing red blood cells so I had zero energy and I lost a lot of weight on PD. I was told by my doctors that I was not allowed to lift more than 5 pounds, I went for walks but due to the loss of red blood cells I wouldn't last that long. I think if you still have the energy cardio is fine but not weight training just because you do not want to put a lot of strain on your core.
