A video of harvesting Hen of the woods mushrooms 2016. Its early fall here in Minnesota but the Hen are popping. They have other name as well like Grifola Frondosa it's latin name. Also Maitake, sheeps head or rams head. They are a top notch choice edilbe and have amazing medicinal value. They are almost always found at the base ,of large oak trees september thru october. Thanks for watching please like, share and subscribe!

Great video. I'm from NE Ohio, and we get a lot of shrooms here, too. I looked and looked for a hen a couple of years ago but to no avail. Then, one night I was looking on the ground for my mother's keys that she thought she dropped, and I almost tripped over this huge hen; there was three of them! They came back the following year, but not last year. Low and behold, a couple of days ago, that same tree has about five baby hens surrounding it. I am stoked and can't wait to get my hands on them. However, I do worry that someone will beat me to it.

Didn't know they grew this early...thanks a ton. One tip to pass along...don't soak them. An hour or so in salt-water to get any bugs out, but no more. They'll absorb it like a sponge, and soggy mushrooms aren't fun to cook.

i found my first hen of the woods today, walking in a heavily wooded park. found two huge ones. Is it common for them to be full of bugs? they seemed a bit fragile when i picked them.. does that mean they are old? they still look white underneath, and brown on top.. i washed them to get the bugs off them.. they were like tiny little white larva.. maybe termites.. not sure. but they smell really good and have a strong mushroom aroma.

Great video... The Mycelium does not live from year to year.. What does is the Spore.. If the area supports the Mycelium and you leave enough mushrooms to drop spores you will see them from year to year...Depending on conditions to support the Mycelium The Mycelium is not part a a specific fungus and supports all fungus spores... You know those white fiborous or web looking growths under rotten vegetation ..

Great hunting, so can you clean and freeze them? Thanks for the video.
@330Maniac
@330Maniac 8 лет назад
yup absolutely. I just freeze mine raw and vacuum pack
@dietretlaw272
@dietretlaw272 7 лет назад
pre-cooking them all then freezing works well too. Saves you the trouble later....then you can just drop em in your soup or whatever...eazy peazy. of course if you pre cook...you'll probly end up eating a lot of it :)

Hello my friend, another poster mentioned about soaking the hens in salt water to remove bugs do you do this as well ? Also you mentioned about becoming certified , what does this certification permit you to do ? Indeed a great video , I am going to subscribe.

Hello Peter nice to meet you and thanks for subscribing! Hens so water up pretty bad so I never do this. I tear mine apart and clean the bugs and dirt away with a soft bristled brush. It certifies you to sell certain kinds of mushrooms to establishments and at farmers markets.
