This is only a small sample as to why I have Bird as the greatest small forward of all time. It's also the greatest 4th quarter I've ever seen, and one of the top three games I've ever watched. That 4th quarter was basically one on five full quart basketball. And Dominique is a class individual. He even has a framed picture of Larry Bird in his home. LOL. Great reaction as always bro!!

Spud Webb is from south Dallas. He had a scholarship worked out at North Texas State University in Denton, 30 miles north, but the coach was fired before he transferred in. Webb had a 42” vertical and grew up with nothing, so the fired coach took him around to bars in Dallas, taking bets from bar patrons that Webb could leap onto the bar from flat-footed on the floor. They made some money that way, then coach called in favors and got Webb a meeting with Jim Valvano at North Carolina State, who offered him a scholarship. Webb averaged 10 pts, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds per game in the NBA, and won the slam dunk contest. He’s now president of Texas Legends, the Dallas Mavericks’ G League team. He’s listed at 5’6”.

Wilkins was smooth almost as smooth as Clyde "The Glide" Drexler. I loved how graceful both of them were. Spud Webb was so so quick and fast it was hard to keep up with him from time to time. Gave hope to all us short 5' 7" dreamers at the time.

Some interesting things about this game. The Hawks were 52-91(57.1%) from the floor, including 1-5 from 3pt range and hit 11-12 foul shots. The Celtics were 45-74(60.8%) from the floor, including 3-9 from 3pt range and hit 25-28 foul shots. Based on the difference in foul shots it seems the Celtics were much more aggressive in trying to get better percentage shots closer closer to the basket that turned into foul shots and to their credit, made most of them. Kevin McHale had 33 points on 10-14 shooting and he made 13-13 of his foul shots, Bird only shot and made 3 foul shots.

spud web was a NIGHTMARE on the defensive end because taller players wouldnt see him pick their pockets.. he could also break down a defense on some serious tip (obviously he is 5'7 and athletic) but of course he could be posted up or just shoot over him. he was a good player.. a point guard. he passed, he broke the defense down, and he was a pest on defense,. Mugsy bogues was similar but at 5'3.. Damon Stoudamire was similar at 5'10.. Nate Robinson DIDNT understand that he could PENETRATE and drop a dime off so he didnt have the same succes the aformentioned guys had.

Dominique was my first ever favorite basketball player. He was unreal at scoring the basketball. Averaged 25 over his 15 year career. That's great! Especially since he only averaged 17 a game as a rookie and in 91-92 he ruptured his Achilles but still came back and played 5 more NBA seasons and 1 in Greece and 1 in Italy. Still averaged 30 a game the season after that injury. From 36-39 he was a shell of himself or his career average would've been even higher. And the modern day Hawks would've been the Clippers with CP3, Blake and DeAndre.

#BirdGang ☘️ Larry Legend Just recently I read an article about this game. I, of course, know about the back stuff. And Ainge mentioned the Archilles/bone spurs that were already causing some issues for Bird. But, in this article they said Bird played this game with bronchial pneumonia. He just wasn't going to let any of that stop them. One might have thought that part of him would be saying if we lose I get to go home and crawl into bed and then start my summer tomorrow.
@carolehall1000
@carolehall1000 Год назад
I never heard about the pneumonia before either. I just looked and found it mentioned in an article on the nba website, so, presumably it's credible. It is shocking to me how many things there are about Larry that aren't widely known. These are things that would be talked about incessantly if they involved some other superstars. Thank you for the info!
@cindyknudson2715
@cindyknudson2715 Год назад
@@carolehall1000 That might be the same article that I originally saw. I just recently listened to a podcast interview with Bob Ryan. One of the things he mentioned was the broken thumb that Bird had in the NCAA Finals. Bird had broken it a few games earlier. Ryan was there in the arena watching that championship game and covering it. He said he saw that the injured thumb did affect Bird's play in that game. But Bird never brings it up, not then nor since, when talking about that loss. Bird says he just wasn't playing well and didn't have the game he knew he needed to have. Bird doesn't make excuses for himself. It's a really good interview, by the way.

Dominique was a class act and the ultimate high flyer , but in the end , just another victim of Larry Bird ! Wilkins never got a title , couldn’t get past Bird in the Eastern conference ! Neither could Barkley , Jordan and Hakeem , to name a few …
@robgelfand2414
@robgelfand2414 Год назад
It's not how many points you score - it's when you score the points. I believe Bird once said that anyone can score during the first 3 quarters but what really matters is when it comes down to crunch time and there are those that step up and those that don't. Bird was all about wanting the ball in crunch time.
@bighousegroove
@bighousegroove Год назад
I saw on another Bird video that I think he never even attempted more than 4 threes in a game. But it was when he shot them that mattered. And when it mattered, he made them. Daggers.
@robgelfand2414
@robgelfand2414 Год назад
@@bighousegroove If there is a video that claimed Bird never attempted more than 4 threes in a game, it is wrong. I didn't count the actual number but it is between 25-35 times he shot more than 4 3's in a game. Twice, 4/3/88 and 12/19/90, Bird attempted 10 3's in a game and that was his highest attempts.
@bighousegroove
@bighousegroove Год назад
@@robgelfand2414 It might have said he never averaged more than 4 3 point attempts per game. I haven't looked it up but I appreciate the correction. The spirit of my comment is still intact-- that how prominent 3 pointers have become has somehow impacted the game badly. Maybe they'll move it out to the 50 foot line and it will somehow seem comparable to what these guys in 1980 had to adapt to.
@robgelfand2414
@robgelfand2414 Год назад
@@bighousegroove The number of 3pt shots taken today is a joke. For instance, I did a postmortem on the Celtics/Heat series. Check this out. If you take the Celtics 3pt shots, have them taking 2pt shots instead and applying the original percentage of the 2pt shots, the Celtics would have had more points in every game except 1 and would have actually won the series in 6 games. As for Bird - there is a story where KC Jones would cancel practice if someone could hit a shot from half-court. Birds teammates should thank him for all the practices Bird got cancelled.

I think if Atlanta beat the Celtics in game 6 they would have had their first ring against the Lakers. The Lebron comment was a good point, when you need your superstar to take control of the game, he has to everytime he's called upon. I think that's what separates Bird from the rest. He had surgery on both Achilles the beginning of the next season, but Larry took control in the fourth quarter, despite the pain he was in with bone chips in both feet. Kobe's the only player to come close to Larry Birds pain threshold.

Actually, Bird was left-handed. When he started playing he saw everyone else shooting with their right hand so that is what he learned. But, indeed, he could play with either hand. My personal experience us when my father batted left-hand in softball, but he was right-handed. His reason? "When I swing I am closer to first than if I bat right-hand. So it only makes sense." Bird could shoot with either hand so that made him a better player in his mind than almost every other player.

Spud was used just to push the ball. He won the slam dunk contest as did Dominique against Jordan. Wilkins got screwed. The celtics were starting to lose a step and were injured, but the Hawks were young and athletic up and coming. Dominique was a GREAT player but Larry Legend never had a head to head duel as intense as this one. The best 4th quarter in playoff history. Bird scored 20 or 22 in the 4th and only missed one shot. What a duel.

Spud usually came off the bench. Doc rivers was th starting PG. Spud was a tempo changer. He would push the pace, get the fastbreak going, good penetrator, pretty decent shooter, he could score & dish. But he was a defensive liability in ways that Muggsy wasn't -- Muggsy was a pure PG, great assist/TOV ratio, didn't look to score as much. Atlanta was deep, Randy Wittman & John Battle as the SG's, Tree Rollins and Willis and Antoine Carr to suport Nique upfront. The Hawks were great at tempo but not in Boston's class in half-court. Another good team in the 80's -- better than the Hawks -- that never won was the Bucks (Moncrief, Lanier, Pressy, M. Johnson, later Terry Pummings, Ricky Pierce) really good squads.

He also seems to be one hell of a guy, I mean in general, not as a baller. I love how he can be so incredibly humble without undermining his own greatness, at all. He praises his opponents and raises then to the skies and Im not thinking "so they were better than you". Im thinking "if THIS fakking guy says that about X... 🤯" Out if all the 80s players, personality wise, he ranks very high. Top5 at least. Bird, Magic and Charles Barkley Im dead set on, I fakking love all those guys for very different reasons.
