Its gotta be unsecured ballast. They didnt want key members suspended the next four races when they are barely in the top 10 for owners championship

I'm not disagreeing with you, but if that were the case, wouldn't they have noticed it in post-race? Maybe they don't check it, but I'd assume if a car was underweight they'd look at it to see if things broke loose.

@@mattj6676 so im not sure with the next gen car, but i know in previous generations cars they would not weigh enough when built intentionally so they could distribute weight where they want. I have no idea how they are mounted either for that matter but im taking a shot in the dark. Maybe they have a center hole and a bolt goes through it to hold it up? I spoke with a director of competition who i know personally. They said that if allowed 17lb leeway they will use 16lbs of that for competitive advantage. The cars burn oil, lose percentage of break pads etc which makes the car lighter. When you add on top of that the rub blocks under the car being broken off or severely damaged, the car ultimately wont meet minimum weight.

An earlier "OotG" video shows a NASCAR inspector explaining the weigh in procedure. They allowed the team to refill the tank. I don't know how much fuel was in the car initially, but gasoline weighs about 6#/gal. So 20gal x 6# = 120# and they were still under weight. They're given a cushion for wear & tear. As a former race team co-owner, we always had to add weight to the car, ballast, to meet minimum. As Hamlin mentioned, you add it to where it does the most good for handling and you use a little as possible. Losing ballast during a race is a major penalty. I agree with others that Hendrick just didn't want to further expose any other problems by trying to explain why the car passed all pre-race weigh ins, but failed post-race with a full fuel tank. That said, Bowman had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Every 4-car team can afford to sacrifice it's weakest performer to gain valuable real-time, on track, under-race-conditions testing data/info. Thats nothing new. However, in this case, video does show a mass flying into the air off Bowman's car when he jumped the turtle. If that was ballast, depending on the type of metal, it could have been the difference in weight. The ballast coming off is one type of penalty. The car being underweight is a different penalty.

Great vid Eric . Im sure Hendrick knows info we don't on what showed up or didn't show up on the 48 after nascar got into their shop . Like for instance , was all the ballast still there . If some were missing I'm sure they would appeal for a lesser penalty .
@TheCloudCreation
@TheCloudCreation День назад
I think Hamlin undersold the importance of weight. Less weight means you accelerate faster, brake faster, change direction faster, have less tire wear and use less fuel. Even if a weight disparity equated to a 0.1% advantage in all those sections. Add them all up together and you're looking at single digit performance improvement in a world where everyone has the exact same car. That's a HUGE advantage and I don't blame the 48 for pushing the envelope. Go to any racing series, even go-karts and you will see teams shaving tenths of pounds off their cars to get as light as possible.

Lighter cars are faster, so if the minimum weight is 3200lbs, you make it weigh 3200lbs not 3201lbs. F1 and IMSA cars run so tight to the minimum weight they won’t do burnouts when they win. They’ll actually drive through the marbles and pick up as much crap as they can get to stick to the hot tires. George Russel got his win at Spa taken away because the FIA did a shortened cool down lap and he didn’t get enough crap stuck to the tires. I do agree with you tho, it’s very easily to avoid it, I’m sure nascar gives some leeway. Not hard to err on the side of caution and try to play within the upper range of said leeway. Sucks for bowman. As a lifelong Jimmie Johnson fan, I’ve always been a HMS fan, I was pretty stoked to see 50% of the final 8 be HMS cars.

I'm not sure if this is even an advantage type deal. I think its more of a checkpoint they missed (unsecured ballast maybe) in the big list of things they have to do to keep the car legal. You can't really spoof the weight thing nowadays, I think it is just a fuck up from hendrick and the 48 team. They know how to weight the car properly for each track, its hendrick, so I believe the mistake.

Before the Olympic break Carson Hocevar was 24th and only had 2 top tens. After, he has a top five and 3 more top tens now in what would be 20th place. The car you could argue against though is the 7 because there's really been no improvement until Justin Haley got in the car

Minimum weight is very black and white. If the weight is off the car can gain a fraction of second advantage each lap over many drivers. So no appeal panel would overturn a weight DQ and restore cars position intentional or not. That's why teams don't appeal weight penalties.

Look……… it doesn’t take an engineer to realize “THEY WERE UNDER WEIGHT ALREADY!!!!!” The thing that was flying through the air on the 34 in car was either a piece of tire rubber or a piece of the carbon fiber diffuser…. That isn’t going to make a huge difference in weight…. The lack of weight had to be in the 10-20 pound range for Hendrick not to appeal.

@unclebob540i3 День назад
Ounces add to pounds, pounds cost lap time. Especially on a road course with all the speed and direction changes. I can see every team trying to push that weight limit to the last quarter ounce. #48 team just pushed it a little too far. Often times, it's better to be lucky than good, #22!

Beyond, "Why make it close?" Eric, we have to ask, "Why not check?" Why are there not week-to-week checks of the car weight, to avoid such a black-and-white rule? And for those that may claim there are, no, there clearly aren't, when we have had this issue repeat several times, and now with the most notable of teams in a playoff scenario. It's a ridiculous omission and, to me, would be a simple check.
