hennessy hammock quick setup and tensioning technique, this method makes it amazingly easy to get perfect tension and adjust it as and when you want without having to untie all the knots. its very simple, two rappel rings and a karibiner. set up time can be reduced to almost nothing and makes it very easy to set up at night as well. (apologies for the sound quality, was very windy, will do a remake if its a big problem)
PLEASE MAKE SURE THIS SYSTEM IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE DIAMETER AND STRENGTH OF ROPE YOU ARE USING! DO NOT USE WITH HH ULTRALIGHT AS THE CHORD IS NOT THICK ENOUGH!

I am a recent new owner of a Hennessy. I bought the carbiners and descending rings today. It really makes sense.

Thanks to this guide, before I even set up my hammock for the first time I went off and got myself some hardware - probably saved me 20 minutes setting it up on my first time. Also a good tip I figured out, once the hammock is back in the snake skin, I put a simple knot on the rope that's at the "head" of the hammock, so when I pull it out to attach it to the tree I know which end my head will be facing when I set it up. great guide, cheers!

I watched this tutorial, went out got all the rings and biners, and I'm here to tell you...it works perfectly! This is the only way I set up my Hennessey from now on. I was backpacking in the North Georgia MTs, started to rain, got my Hennessey up in 1 min flat, and with the rain fly wrapped around the hammock, my sleeping area never got wet. Jimmy's shoe tip is great too, always know where your boots are, and no scorpions!

Wow! this is by far the best way anyone has hung a hammock I've seen on RU-vid! Thank you so much! Very Helpful! I'm new to using a hammock, and was worried about knots, setting up, etc... But with this it makes it so simple.
@JimmyMcSparron

hey Corey, im glad you found the video of use. Nowadays i tend to just use a tensionless hitch with a quick release knot round a caribiner. the method above does work but can cause damage to the rope in the long run if you arent careful. eno slap straps could be an alternative depending on the type of hammock you have! hammockforums is also a great place to start looking for more information and i thoroughly recommend it. any further questions then please dont hesitate to get in touch.

Couldn't get all the rings I needed so I did your idea but used a simple half hitch (instead of the clove hitch) on the 'biners on one end with the tensioning ring set up on the other. Worked great, the half hitch released when I needed to untie it.

For ease of hanging my hammock I used "SMRGearMe" easy slings and carabiners. I traveled 49 days in Japan this summer and hung in all types of locations for 41 of those nights. We had their Nube' system and loved it too... the two of us hung in the Nube' together with complete protection and saved on weight by sharing our shelter. But back to the easy slings they are much lighter than all the webbing others are selling, the webbing is needed only to protect the trees, the marine grade Blue Amsteel rope is just as strong and so much lighter. Many connection spots on the easy slings makes for quick and easy adjustments. They are a new company and I love the Nube' shelter made for hammocks and the easy slings in particular!

i tried it at home and it functions really well with just two climbing-carabiners as well. repelrings are a bit expensive for this kind of use. and you can hang gear in you backpack easier on your hike with 4 extra carabiners. ;)

The technique is sound but I suggest two, side-by-side caribiners on each tree strap. They will provide the same functionality as the rap rings but with less weight (you will be eliminating two pieces of metal) and less cost expense. Thank you for the vid.

@mcsparron So yesterday when I went out to get gear for this setup: I found out that fatter descent rings are better (more surface area to grab the rope) and that the more symmetric your carabiner is the more evenly your rings will pull for a tighter grip on the hammock rope. Thanks again. This setup is perfect!

im a climber and it is irrelevant which heal crotch takes what part of the equipment. the load is carried along the spine regardless and everything being done is well within the 23kn rating and not being cross loaded. if anything, keeping the rings at the smaller end will ensure that the rings do not slide up towards the gate and offset the loading as this would greatly reduce the integrity of the carabiner.
@JCHaywire
@JCHaywire 14 лет назад
@mcsparron I figured it out--McSparron is correct, of course, part of the HH product ships with a thinner Spectra cord, and some of the less pricey models ship with a softer, larger diameter cord--as pictured in the video here. I actually thought his hands were smaller than mine, and his rappelling rings were smaller than mine--but I bought the very items in this video, and this solution doesn't work. Oh, well, this gives me impetus to make whoopie slings! Thanks for a great video! Jonathan

You could get rid of the rings and their weight by tying a clove hitch knot to the carabiner. This is a climbing knot used to lock oneself to an anchor or onto a carabiner. The knot is easy to tie and is easily adjustable.

@BAMAman1100 Roll Tide, brother! The quick release knot is known as a Slippery Half Hitch. Simply wrap the loose end around the rope once, make a loop and slide it through the opening you created as you went around the rope. Next, simply pull it tight against the garda hitch and the buckles. To release, simply pull the loose end and the knot unties itself. Videos are easier than explaining it. Good luck!
@JimmyMcSparron
@JimmyMcSparron 13 лет назад
@pyaco039 i appreciate that some people have experienced issues. i my self have been fortunate enough not to and i do believe that is because i have the thicker rings and not thin ones like other people. a knot decreases the breaking strain of a rope by 50% on average anyway.... my cord has been checked recently and has no kinks, breaks, marks or other damage... i have always maintained that this method should be used with care and not on smaller diameter stock cord.

@kc7fys it will a little bit, but it depends how you do it. use your spare arm to take the weight off the chord as you tighten it to avoid friction burns on the sheath.

great video, technique for setup is brilliant. silly question i guess but im new to hennessy and knowone is chatting about it - the rain fly, is it meant to be set up with the shiny side up or dull side up or does it matter? its just i thought the fabric may only be water proof effective on one side of the rainfly and it actually doest really specify anywhere, but seems as how you have tested it in jungle, my bet is im safe doing what you do to stay dry. so dull facing sky? or shiny facing sky?

@AlFrosty they are a good company needle sports! hope you found them helpful! the hammocks are brilliant. remember to create as little friction as possible when you pull through to tighten up at the end, this will ensure as little damage as possible! dont wanna burn the sheath of the rope out! shouldnt happen with such fat rings but just be careful! quick release knot is vital, i tied a normal knot first time and nearly had to cut the rope!!!!

@johnlevity tree huggers come with ALL HH hammocks so far as i am aware..... if you dont have an HH hammock then you can buy tree huggers or similar ideas from many different places. they are basically a length of seat belt from your car, with two loops stitched in at each end.... they just stop the rope cutting into the tree by increasing the surface area over which the pressure is spread.....

You should look into upgrading the suspension to a whoopie sling - it is lighter in weight, requires no hardware, is simpler to adjust, weighs less, and IMO, better. check it out. I just made my own with about $10 in Amsteel Blue cord.
