I really enjoyed listening to these two scholars talk about my two favorite artist of all time! My own art has been a posthumous dialogue between Matisse and Picasso for many years. while I unfortunately was unable to see this exhibit I did see the Matisse retrospective at MOMA in 1992 and about 10 years ago I saw a splendid Picasso exhibit in Seattle from the collection of the Muse’ Picasso. Both of these exhibit still inform what I do today.

To me, Picasso was like a UFC fighter, boxer and wrestler. Well rounded and inventive.

I love the curators sense of wonder about the artists work . Academics can become mechanised to their subjects .....and these guys have retained their sensitivity. I love that they never asked themselves who was the better artist !!! They dropped the 'versus' .

What a joy to learn from the intimacy of the exchanges in these two great men. It is really good to know that we can learn from very close origins, rather than so many art reviewers who write from their own ideas based from documented history which they can only do as a result of their place in time.

This contrast really deepens our understanding of both artists. Thank you for a great video.

Come on, Charlie. There is no greatest artist because art is not a competition. Each artist is different and those differences are what makes us interesting.

i like how he's not so subtly comparing the relationship between Matisse and Picasso with that of these two curators. This channel really knows how to pick em. Please suggest other interviews like this.

What a wonderful, educational presentation. To both curators thank you for sharing your deep study and understanding of the artists. Personally, I miss Charlie Rose as I believe he was one of the best interviewers on TV.

I have always felt that Picasso was the greater genius but Matisse was the greater artist.

brilliant Doco , for years I thought of a winner and loser scenario between the two. Thanks for the insight. I know from another Doco the other day on RU-vid that they had a profound respect for each other but this fills a big hole in my understanding of the birth of modernism. I love it when great art historical minds get interviewed about great artists who were friends , rivals, opposites yet are equally the same... AND what do I think about Matisse and Picasso? ... There is a Thai saying I heard when in Bangkok , I asked a man if the bluejeans I was thinking of buying from him, a KOH San road street marketeer, were really Levi's, and he said "Yes ... same same but different." ... Matisse and Picasso are 'same same but different'. Note... Kirk Varnedoe was a great mind who decked the halls of MOMA and his death is a loss to art historians and artist alike.

Well done analyses of so many issues a great help - getting a handle on on few things that have escaped me up until to now. I knew Kirk a bit who kindly spent some time with me during the MoMA press opening of the Jackson Pollock opening just after his speeches & very kind. Surpisingly Charlie held his own very well guiding things with sharpness & precision. I of course saw that very key show. I would still put Picasso on top but now much better see that they had a long very competitive mutually advantageous dialogue where they were both became further aesthetivally liberated & strengthened.

Both are Great Artist. Thank you for this video.

Here they present this concept of juxtaposition as if it’s totally unheard of,!and yet in the next breath they try to shade the Barnes for not loaning their paintings for this exhibit… Maybe it’s because all the paintings in the Barnes collection are part of an expansive gallery presentation where juxtaposition is ITS WHOLE DEAL! Not only paintings but also furniture, decorative fixtures, masks, pottery, and more. All of them talk as if they’re the smartest person in the room…

Matisse speaks through colors Picasso speaks through forms , imho.

Matisse's composition was SO MUCH SIMPLER than Picasso's --- I find very little in Matisse's composition that challenges me. Same with color. The complexity of Picasso's colors is so much more satisfying.

That was more than interesting. It sure got me thinking about changes done on 2 older projects of mine and made me think of stepping back into the tennis court. I'll need some time since I have several projects, however reinvention isn't a problem for me, it's a must!

During the Picasso and Matisse, Personality Comparison: (beginning @ 8:01) Picasso was Congenial, but not Social. Matisse was Social not Congenial. - Kirk Varnedoe ... and @ 9:59 Matsise, being irritated at a recognition, a welcoming, and making the comment, "Oh, they must think Im Picasso" ... A statement that could Only be interpreted by: ("It's not what you say, but how you say it."), 🔹As the statement can either be a quick witt humor, or it can be an arrogant remark. John Elderfield leads us to interpret the comment more so on the latter. Matisse sounds competitive, from a personal insecutity, and possibly on more than one level. The statement a "Tell" of Matisse having "a nerve of insecurity". This brings to mind our ("Human Ego Mind, aka Lower Mind, aka Adolescent Mind "). Point being, how much we can miss in the value of our Life Journey when we arent aware of and/or dont establish a habit of being "Conscious in Thought" + "Applying Higher Mind", aka Mature Mind, where all the Positive Thought Energies and Wisdom reside. The Lower Mind holds all the negative thought energies, and are associated with Ego and Adolescence, yet to emotionally develop into maturity. Academics, Artists, Sports Stars, Celebrities, etc, are more visible and therefore, when apparent, its more easily recognized as having a large ego, particularly when arrogant. Elderfield refers to Mat8sse as "Gentile", but if that were the case, he wouldn't have made the statement, an Authentic Gentile requires the Higher Mind, it's necessary to be fully genuine. Picasso remains the most recognized, Publically, he remains a prominent Star in his field, he is overwhelmingly one of the top 5 best known artists of all time. Virtuosity would have been enough in the 20thC had it not been for Picasso's personality. Picasso was positive narcissist. Matisse was benevolent sensualist. The former catches the attention of the base audience.

I still CANNOT take the likes of Picasso and Matisse as serious and fine artists. At best, they were revolutionaries who used anti-art as art. It's not art per se.

Appears to be some crazy correlation between being an artsy fartsy art curator and growing prolific facial moles. Anyhow! love the art (tho Picasso was a flaming narcissist and misogynist).

Too bad, the host Charlie Rose had a sexual scandal in previous years. It really hard to watch all this video, his program no longer have creditability any more. The long shadow cast on what he did! The darkest side of a human being! 😆😣😏😠😜
