Henry Cloud’s Journey to Faith: A Psychologist on God, Miracles, & Science 

I was diagnosed with cancer last year. I have a lot of knowledge and experience. I've been a Christian since 1974 and have a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology, BUT I'm still learning and growing. This interview encouraged me so much. I am on the daily journey of finding that delicate balance between acceptance of cancer without self-blame, trusting and know that God is sovereign, but also believing he can easily, miraculously heal me, along with doing all within my power to promote health in my life is so relevant to me right now. Thank you! I always learn something from your interviews.

I'd love to say how appreciative I am of how you handle people in your interviews Sean. It's refreshing to see the host be interrupted by their guest frequently, and you stop talking and allow them to say what they want. I've seen soo many interviews where the host will just keep trying to talk over the guest. You are a great listener and extremely respectful to let the other person talk. Love you brother. I was in one of the Minirth/Meier clinics in 1996 having been diagnosed with severe depression, The first book in our sessions was going over, reading and studying Changes that Heal. I had at that time been a Christian for 20 years and thought I was doing all the right Christian things and continued to spiral and at that time the stigma of mental health brought on shame, The 1st thing the Drs told us was that we were the bravest people out there for getting help. It has taken years for me to accept that I struggle with some mental health issues, but…I no longer carry shame, and am and will be on my medications ,I call them (brain vitamins) and thank God for them !!!! This is how I see how my Loving Father takes good care of me 😊Looking forward to reading Dr.Clouds book. After the love of my life left me and i wanted to die, God gave me Psalms 37:4 and I KNEW that it was the answer and after living that Word, He totally and completely came through for me in a HUGE way! He WILL ALWAYS fulfill His Word, He HAS to be true to His Word or He will cease to be God!

When I see this man, I see Faith and Joy because of it. I’d love to speak to this guy one on one.

The boundaries book was so hugely impactful for me. I went through an outwardly “normal” but secretly nightmarish childhood. After my oldest was born I completely fell apart, “boundaries” helped me begin to understand why I couldn’t function as a parent (or a person, really) and how to begin building my own boundaries, not just in how I expect others to treat me, but also in how I should be treating the people around me. I just can’t say enough.

Dr Henry Clouds book had a great effect and change in my life…thank you Sean for having him on…you are a wonderful interviewer & a good listener love your channel 💙🙏👍

Great interview. This is the second time this week this channel has recommended a book to me, and I love it. End the Stalemate is the other book. Fantastic, thoughtful book much needed in our culture today. I plan to utilize the website as well. Great timing all the way around. I've suffered with intense anxiety and depression since childhood. I was angry at God for many years for the lot I felt He gave me. It was revealed to me in prayer one night, not an audible voice but lightbulb moment, that God created the mundane systems, the laws of life. We just scratch the surface with our study on God's creation in Psychology. We know the things that typically create joy for people. These things are not made by man, they are from our Creator. So, you may think God isn't there because He isn't providing an instant miracle, but miracles are not the only or primary way God brings healing. God is in the every day things. He is more present than we often realize.

This was fascinating to listen to. Thank you. If you are looking for topics, might I suggest a discussion on Christian's response to toxic behavior (narcissists, psychopaths, & sociopath abuse. People twisting facts of a situation to make them a victim to justify emotional abuse. Someone using you and using you until you've had enough.) Also, when you distance yourself from them for protection, you feel guilty and feel like you aren't being a "good Christian" to them. Basically, setting up healthy boundaries with toxic people. Thanks! Never mind. I went on Audible to find Dr. Cloud's books and realize I already have one in my Audible library called "Safe People" which I just started listening to prior to watching this podcast. I had no idea it was the same author. 😂 I am in awe of The Lord!

I agree 100%. It is never an intellectual or evidential barrier. Every single time I listen to an atheist, I think it is their experience that lead them to that conclusion.

This is a great interview. I'm in the Refiner's fire right now. I'm the midst of Abba's perfect timing and plan, which includes a great deal of pain and challenges; I am totally dependent upon Him. I cannot do anything on my own strength anymore, because that has been taken from me. My main idol has been being so capabale and adaptable that I can get through anything and not needing anyone else's help. That has been totally upended.

This is great because so many Christians I hear are very anti psychology but it’s much more nuanced than that

Insightful and encouraging interview! When Dr Cloud shared the story about asking the LORD to direct him to the pastor that he'd heard the day before -- and the way he actually found him-- it reminded me of Phillip the Evangelist being translated to Azotus. Plus I experienced something similar two different times, years ago.

Dr. Cloud, your "religious" upbringing mirrors my own, brought up Methodist and living in the middle socially. Until I hit bottom during and just after college.

34:10 I want y’all to know the change in atmosphere in his car that he felt is very real. My girlfriend and I experienced that once when I was driving us from San Antonio to Houston at night. We were East bound on I-10, and there was a car in my lane, speeding, heading directly towards my car. By the time I realized it, it was too late for me to react. Suddenly, as I turned to look at my girlfriend in the passenger seat, the entire atmosphere inside my car changed, and she was aware of it also. The best way I can describe it is that everything went into slow motion, a kind of stillness. My hands were on the steering wheel and I felt the steering wheel make strange movements, but to me, even blinking my eyes was very slow. I felt the wind from the car passing us on my side, rock my car, side to side, and just as suddenly as the atmosphere had changed, it changed back to “normal”. The last thing I had seen before turning to look at my girlfriend was the oncoming car’s headlights right in front of us. All praises to our magnificent Lord, JESUS CHRIST, for saving the both of us and whoever was in the car that passed us. Thank you, Jesus! ✨💖💪✝️🕊️💖✨

33:45 I've had the same thing happen to me. I was in a Sunday school and all of a sudden the old man who was teaching broke out into toungues whilst he was telling us a story and the moment I heard him speak in tongues all temperature dissapeared and it was like an out of body experience where all of a sudden there was no temperature, no stress, just nothing other than peace for a few seconds until he stopped speaking in toungues and I was snapped back into reality. I just KNEW in that moment that that is what it feels like when the Holy Spirit hits you

As a Christian therapist who specializes in helping survivors of sexual abuse who often experience false guilt and shame the Lord showed me that spiritual principle several decades ago and that is that survivors have been sinned upon. A child who has been sexually abused does not cause it. The perpetrator dumps all his shame and guilt into the survivor so they don’t have to feel guilty.

Sean your interviews are awesome. Love Dr. Clouds insight. I also appreciate the clarity you bring to your interviews. You actually remind me of a younger Dennis Prager. I always felt like he truly cared about his audience and it wasn’t about self-promotion.

World-renowned psychologist Henry Cloud's book is now officially at the top of my list of things to read!

I love to hear testimonies of God's goodness and deliverance. I pray His continued blessing on this brother and Sean's ministry. God does indeed continue to perform miracles; however, Christians should be wary about accepting miracles as the defining sign that God is blessing someone or something. Jesus, in Matthew 24 and other places, warned people that they should not look for miracles, but rather take Him at His word, regardless of how things seem. Revelation 13 (and 18, I think) even warns that the enemy will do miracles and deceive many.

My kids know about my abused childhood and have told me I should see a therapist. My insurance won't cover a Christian therapist (none in network). These days, there is not one secular therapist who would not consider divorcing me from my Christian faith "job number one" and think that was already half the battle.

I loved this episode very much and I will share it with people who suffer from depression. Thank you for this conversation.

I'm glad you made this video,I can recall when I was homeless, lost my only daughter; lost my car; my husband is bedridden, im his caretaker and raising my daughters 3 young children. no support system, no state help and faced with many things in Life until $75,000 biweekly began rolling in and my Life went from A homeless nobody to a different person with good things to offer!!!!!❤️

Even If WE would understand, WE would Not BE God. He is the Designer and allows US to See some of the Design, so wonderful, thank you, Father, but WE cannot created Life, WE cannot Bring Life into death... Let's Bend both knees and pray and BE glad that our Creator Father IS in Charge. And WE need to learn to Walk towards Him with our Brothers and Sisters.

Soooo interesting I just started reading this morning The Power of the Praying Parent and in the foreword her son Chris was also changed by the power of that same verse in Matt 6:33!! I just thought that was cool in the same day I came across the same verse that God used for those two different people🤯🤯 to speak to them

This is my problem, I have so many questions that have no answers, and I have the problem of trusting GOD, who knows all. I keep wondering, which makes me think I have no faith in GOD. This is my hardest cross to bear. I remember a person told me I was arrogant. Now 45 years later, I still wonder. I believe in GOD, but lack faith, I guess.
