HENRY HILL - "GOODFELLAS". How a respected gangster became a snitch. Real story

Do you know Henry Hill from the movie Goodfellas, played by Ray Liotta? What is so interesting about this gangster? He didn't kill dozens of people. He wasn't wanted for 40 years. And he wasn't the head of the mafia. Well, not much, but a famous book was written about his life, and a great movie was made. All of this was not for nothing. He saw everything: murders, fraud, robberies, prison, and he told the world about it. He had a target on his head even before the movie was made. But after the movie revealed the secrets of many gangsters, Henry became afraid of even the slightest rustle because the gangsters had announced an open season on him… But did they find him?

Guys! I apologize! Honestly, I'm tired of apologizing for mispronouncing some names, but I guess I deserved it. If this were AI, you would have noticed it right away, but here was a real person voicing the names, who, unfortunately, like all of us, is prone to making mistakes. I've been working with this person for a long time, but he doesn't seem to be very good at pronouncing mafia names. In any case, the responsibility lies with me, as I was the one who wrote the text, but didn't double-check the voicing for pronunciation of the names. I have taken your criticism into account and will try to make fewer mistakes in the next videos. Thank you for your support, friends!

Don't beat yourself up bro..its a NYC 5 Boros Eye-talian thing..and some of them don't even get it right. Even as an Irish-German AMERICAN, that grew up in the center of it all (South Ozone Park and How'beach) I know to call Manicotti, "Muna-gut" Cross Bay Blvd is "Crozz-Bay," Long Island 🏝 is "Long GUY land. Calamari is "Golla-mah)." Cousin is "My Cuzzin," River is "Riivah" et et cetera...Capitsh (you understand, in Italian, spelling?) Is "KAAABEESCH???). Not looking Italian and moving out to "Long GUY land" when I was 12, I can speak the King's English, Locust Valley Lockjaw (Like Thurston Howell III Gilligan's Island 🏝), and Being a College 🎓 graduate, I can turn it on and off to suit my company 😀 or to make jokes, or let someone know, I'm from the Old Nay-bah-hood! Cuz...You get that double-take from, them... "HOW YOU KNOWA DAT?" actual Question from an Old Brooklyn Plumber I knew....I had asked about one of his employees, Doug. And, In a very suspicious 🤔 and accusatory tone in Broken English he said "Howa youa knowa DOUG?????" like how could I possibly know the same peeps, he did but He don't me! It was hilarious 😆 and we use that phrase till this day to break his shoes....Dont beat yourself up bro, I find it Precious and Hilarious how these names are attempted...its all good as long as the Content is accurate...who cares....Matt

I met Henry when I was a cop, in one of the cities he stayed in on witness protection. I had coffee with him. He gave me a signed cookbook with excellent old school Italian recipes. He did not strike me as a tough guy. More of a guy who would do thefts and a little white collar crime. Being of Italian decent myself, he reminded me of one of my uncles. He was short and looked to me like the old comedian-actor Jimmy Durante. Everywhere he went in witness protection he always made himself visible to the public and he committed drug related crimes, as he was an addict. In my City, he was doing a pizza shop promotion book signing while at the same time, had nurses stealing drugs for him from the local hospital. The thefts were discovered, the nurses fired and everything was kept from the public because of embarrassment to the prestigious hospital. The Marshalls would quietly move Henry to another city. Rinse and repeat.

@@showcrime I asked him if he knew any of my relatives in Pittsburgh and he didn’t know them. He gave me a name and asked me if I had heard anything about this guy. He told me that the guy was a “ wannabe wise guy” and that he wanted to open a strip club with Henry. I never heard of the guy. He asked me why I was still a patrol officer and not “inside”, given my family connections in Pittsburgh. I told him that I had no contact with those folks, since I left for college and then subsequently moved out of state. We talked about our mothers Italian cooking. He was a good cook and the book that he gave me, had some recipes that would be hard to find. Most of those recipes left the world, with the women who made them. I have been around some hitters and even other psycho cops, that I was careful what came out of my mouth. I did not feel that way with Henry. Henry was like the guy that would be a sneaky thief or pick up numbers slips, but I did not sense danger around him like some guys. He knew however, some very dangerous people. I liked Henry and found him funny. We hit it off.

Henry seemed like a great guy who would give you the shirt off his back, but would go in the top dresser drawer and take cash 💸 😉 if he needed it. He never passed himself off as a tough guy, but He could be violent if he HAD to. Some people try to portray him as a witless loser hanging in the background. Au Contrare! He was an amazing jungle cat that had unbelievable senses and was pretty much the only one who avoided death at the Hands of Jimmy The Gent Burke. Hey, Henry had alot more interesting life than most of us. Matt

One of my favorite nuggets about Henry Hill: While talking to Nicholas Pileggi about his mobster life, they'd take breaks in the interviews, and he'd talk to Pileggi's wife about his life in Witness Protection and how ridiculous some of it was. Pileggi's wife also found a lot of humor in his stories, so she wrote them down and made a movie about that, too. Pileggi's wife is Nora Ephron - and the movie "My Blue Heaven" (with Steve Martin playing the Henry Hill inspired character) cost a quarter as much as Goodfellas, and a third of the time to film - and both Goodfellas and My Blue Heaven came out in the same year (about a month apart).

That's really interesting. These movies really affected me as a young man growing up in London. I watched both avidly over and over. I believe it said 1963 at the bottom..That's means Tommy DeSimone was only "13" years old and Henry was "20"..Henry he met Karen Freeman through Paul Vario Jr. And his date..Not Tommy & his date..Henry when he was living in Kentucky he got $500,000 from the movie and they promised him Millions more that he never got that's why he went through the money so fast on drinking drugs and gambling..Was the movie accurate who Henry Hill I'd say maybe 60% the other 40% was made up BS..Why not everybody's either in jail or dead and you're getting paid great money why not make yourself look like a cool gangster..😮💰

@@Ditka-89You “think” they are all scummy?? If you have to think twice before realising they are evil then you have issues I’m sorry to say. As to Henry Hill being “Scummier” what rationale or logic is that?? Henry Hill was quite literally abused terribly as a child and was groomed by Paul Varios crew who took him in. Henry is not very intelligent and was easily moulded in to a low ranking mobster who drank heavily and used drugs to block out the horrific things he witnessed and remember he knew nothing else and himself was controlled by people like Burke and Di Simone and claimed until very late in his life that although pressured he never killed anyone however he did admit to his crimes but involvement in any violence he claimed this was where he was given no option but he always maintained he was coerced through sheer fear for his own life to do it and I think he played a part in a murder however and BELIEVE ME I am not defending this asshole, when he was appearing on Howard Stern and often drunk shortly before his death he confessed to his sins and knew he was an idiot and a terrible person however the very fact he couldn’t live with his past sins and was a hopeless drunk and drug user who had PTSD should make it pretty obvious he is certainly not Jimmy Burke or Di Simone who were complete EVIL and in the end he did help bring down the Mafia and put over 100 confirmed Murderers behind bars and had a relationship with his family. The end of his life was Tragic and terribly sad how he just destroyed himself but maybe he deserved that I don’t know, but I do know he was not in the same league as most Mobsters back then regarding Violent crime and Murder and is one of the very few with any redeeming qualities whatsoever. That is the impression I got. Ray Liotta and his portrayal was a LONG way from Henry Hill in real life. Frankly, I think Henry glommed on the Paul Varyo, and then, when he could, I think he got in tight with Jimmy Burke. As far as how far his involvement really went, we will never know. I do not think anyone who has been forced to has ever totally come clean about their misdeeds. Hill included.

I was a kid in the 80s and parents weren't as clued up back then and they classed the video player and VHS tapes as a good babysitter. I spent hours watching all the horrors, action and kung-fu movies I could. By a young age I felt desensitised to hard-core violence and blood and gore. Think I was 14 or 15 when Goodfellas came on TV and it had me hooked from the very beginning. I classed it as more terrifying than any horror because it was real, had happened and the violence felt raw and authentic. I had an immature and naivety and I thought these mafia types could bully or attack anyone and get away with it which made them deadly. That movie got burnt into my mind I must have seen it dozens of times over the years. Up until that movie I'd never heard of scorsese but the same channel was doing a scorsese month and next was raging bull

They're nearly as laughable as their American counterparts, it's a real hoot to read about all the young tracksuit laden lads whose bodies are being found in bin bags littered across Dublin. I can almost imagine the scene, two paddies trying to chop a body to pieces in some shitty council flat's garden shed 😂 Shame they're not giving the gardaí a similar treatment.

However, I was scared straight after a heists at a University. A large drug shipment to one of the students. I was 17 and my buddy and I got nailed for armed robbery. Being dumb and naive, I didn't think it was so terrible. We did those type of capers regularly. Little did I know, they wanted to put me away for years. My mother got me super attorney and told me this was the last time. After working with my attorney, I got counseling, enrolled in college. Went to court and received probation. I graduated received my B.S. degree earned a commission as an Army Officer. I went on to have a great career with numerous awards and decorations. I look back on those early years and am extremely thankful, I wised up. I'll never forget what my father said before he died and I was an officer. " son, I knew you would be a big crook or become somebody successful. I am glad you didn't become a crook." The 70s was my time for growth.

apparently henry hill lost most of his respect when he went to prison in '72. During his time behind bars he got into a beef with some guy and the guy slapped him around, henry ran to paul vario over it. After that most of that crew didn't want anything to do with henry, in fact, henry got his wife to write a bunch of letters and he got transferred to some type of farm/work camp. You would think this is a trivial issue, but respect and reputation means everything in that world, once you start showing weakness, these guys feel like they can't trust you anymore. He already had the reputation of being a drunk and a drug user, and the thing in prison kind of was the last straw.. Henry still was involved in criminal activities but not with the Paul Varrio crew, he was selling drugs with that guy from boston, maybe his name is Paul Massey? or something. Thats also why a lot of people questions his involvement in the Lufthansa heist. He was kind of on the outs with that crew, i think the only criminal involvement he had with them was the boston point shaving thing, and Jimmy ended up not making a whole lot of money because one of the players got cold feet.. So by the time he ratted, he wasn't a "respected gangster" You think Paul Vario would have an affair with the wife of someone he actually respected? And you think the rest of those guys didn't know about it? People in this life gossip more than a chain of hair salon.
