The Chinese are experts when it comes to art, crafts and design, making paper, writing, painting, ink, origami, the list goes on. In today's modern world where so much is mass produced in factories and many people use computers for art and craft, it is very important to keep the skills and techniques of traditional art and craft alive and keep them going and pass them down to the following generations.

Origami is Japanese 🍙 but yes, China has many artisans and traditional arts and practices ❤

very helpful video Mr. Li...........I have been taking workshops in Sumi-e for the last few years on and off, and often feel that I never understand many essential things about the different styles of Sumi-e and what to use and how to use it to achieve certain looks.............your video was great in helping me to further understand more about different papers and different styles...........thank you so much!

It is very difficult to buy general chinese or japanese paper in Germany. I dont have any idear, how or where to buy it. I only found very exotic paper.

Maybe look in large art stores like some of the bösner stores. They can be quite large depending on which one you go to (1.000 square meters or more at times) so you might find it there, along with loads of stuff you didn't search.

I have a couple of roles of Chinese rice paper and it seems they are not rolled tightly to the tube so they come kinda wrinkled in places, is this normal and should I not worry? I’m based in Hong Kong and nearly all of the Chinese roles are like this whereas the Japanese paper roles seem to be tightly rolled up. Just wondering if I’m expected to stretch first or just work with it. No worries either way. I explored DaFen in Shenzhen the other week and managed to pick up some great brushes from their Art village. Amazing place. Trying to plan a trip to nanjing next to visit Fu baoshi museum.

It depends. If you want it to create feathery effect with your washes, yes. But I would draw my contour lines on dry paper.

Hello! Can I use a western watercolor on xuan rice paper? Will there some differences?
@blueheronarts
@blueheronarts 4 года назад
Yes, but you can't wet mount because they tend to blur when rewet. Besides they will not blend with sumi ink well. They tend to run separately from ink and generate a halo.

@@shanahleigh4114 DS is very good. Try avoid using thick paint and dry mount your painting.

What distinguishes brushes for beginners from brushes targeted towards advanced calligraphers?
@blueheronarts
@blueheronarts 6 лет назад
The quality and price. The pointing tip of the brush hairs, the resilience, the shape and the ink storage. capabilities etc The best calligraphy brush i recommend is this one www.blueheronarts.com/wang-xizhi-character-stiff-hair-calligraphy-brush-p-3698.html

Thank you so much for your response. I recently learned about Chinese calligraphy. I am also curious to know if there is a specific place where I'm supposed to put my seal on my paper, or can it be anywhere (does it have to be in the corner)?
@blueheronarts
@blueheronarts 6 лет назад
It is an integral part of the composition of Chinese painting. Yes, on corners and sides, or any place with the calligraphy(another organic part of a Chinese or Japanese painting. Please join my online class at ChineseBrushPainting.ning.com and I will answer all questions and give you detailed help on seal placement etc. For Chinese calligraphy, the seal is placed next to the signature, or, if it a rectangular mood seal on the upper right at the beginning of your writing.

@@molly1376 that is just another source of inspiration. Place it where it feels good, there's no mathematical equation to where it should be. Consider it yet another part of your art. If you intend to sell your art, look at which is actually bought, see what others see as appealing. If not, just place it where you want.

Hi Henry, How does the half-sized paper actually react to a water drop and ink? I think the ink on my half-sized paper bleed too much. Not that I have accidentally received a different paper than ordered. I have this here according to the sticker on the pack: www.inkston.com/shop/art-materials/paper/half-cooked-xuan-paper/
