For those not familiar with Henry Tropic-Cool, it has been around for decades and is considered the best product for reducing heat on metal roofs from sun exposure. It is 100% silicone and much like the oven mitts made from the same material, heat just doesn't pass through it very well. It's also bright white so it's quite reflective also. Add the fact that it sticks like glue and is 100% waterproof and you've got the ideal coating for any RV with a metal roof. I'm not sure about other surfaces that it is compatible with but I know it's the coating of choice for all the school bus conversions. It's also the most expensive at around $65 for 0.9 gallons. It's a bit difficult to apply especially if you can't stand on the roof as was my case. That being said, this video will attempt to document the incredible effectiveness of the product. Every attempt was made to keep variables to a minimum but taking measurements over several days with almost constant temperatures and variable cloud cover makes the data very interesting if not perfectly precise.

Try not to do it when it's really hot. I was helping a fellow truck camper who just coated his roof in AZ and it ended up being a less smooth surface because it started drying before it was fully spread. Didn't really affect the functionality or integrity but it had a more textured surface than mine did. Follow the instructions on the can fully. Also as part of the fun, be sure to take a baseline temperature inside the unit before coating so that you have comparative data to gauge the end results (any indoor/outdoor thermometer will suffice).

Travels with Yoly cool thanks for the info. Is it a must to wash the roof beforehand? We full time rv and have no place to clean and watch the roof off. Any suggestions?

@@fredtalk5736 Our truck camper at the time was relatively new and it did not have any build up of dirt like most RV roofs do after time passes. I rinsed the roof and then wiped it down with a diluted mixture of Simple Green and water with a large sponge. The Simple Green cuts and oils and grease. Then I rinsed the roof off again and let it dry. Don't bother trying to work the coating out of a conventional paint tray but rather just pour out a large diameter circle on the roof and immediately spread it out with the roller. Also, 2 coats are recommended, both for function and appearance.

Just put 5 gallons Henry 887 Tropi-Cool on our 29 foot 06 Thor Grand Junction EPDM roof, no swelling, no deformation, no wrinkles! Roof is very clean and water pools up in beads. After a power wash, treated with anti-fungal then painted on all edges of roof fixtures and roof membrane tie downs with a paint brush, allowed 6 hours of cure time! Then 1/4 nap roller applied first coat, waited 12 hours of cure time and then 1/2 nap roller applied second coat! End result is beeeeuuuutiful! This will get me another 4 years or so out of the roof before a new roof deck and EPDM or TPO membrane replacement!

It's heat rejection properties are amazing and the water proofing is an added bonus. Sounds like you did the job right and you should get more than 4 years of extended roof life.

A neighbor down the hill painted his house, giant shop and outbuilding roofs BLACK. I'm talking New Mexico heat .... what is wrong with people? My bus roof went from hot enough to blister your hands to cool to the touch. They were dark blue to start. It has dual AC units, before both had to be running to keep the Temps in check, after coating the roof, one AC unit is more than enough so I alternate them. Don't forget your sunglasses when using this stuff!

Thanks. Good video tracking of temps in and out and proof Henry works on this application. I am prepping my old winnie filon roof before applying Henry to see if I can extend its life. Just looking for tips on prepping and application.

I used a diluted mixture of Simple Green and water and used a large sponge to wipe the roof after first rinsing with a hose. Then I rinsed it again and let it dry. My roof was fairly new and I just needed to remove some trace oils and some light dirt. I used a roller for application on the roof and a brush for the vent lids. The material was too thick to draw evenly from a paint tray so I just poured a specific amount (about an 8 inch diameter circle) directly onto the roof and then spread it as evenly as I could with the roller. I applied a second coat the next day. The second coat made a marked difference and I recommend it.

good video, great detail, maybe put Henry's 887 in title, because they do have other roof coatings, ok I put this(Henry 887) on my 5th wheel 3/17 so far it has been great, the slightist problem I have seen with this is the dust sticks to it a little more then elastomeric coating and have to be very careful when walking on it when it is wet, very slick, for an experiment took a cardboard box and applied this inside, next day filled with water, next day still had same amount of water, this winter when go to AZ have 38' MH and 28' TT to do.

Good call on adding the numerical clarifier. You are correct about the variety of similar products in their line. So do I under you correctly in that this can be used on conventional RV roofs covered in the rubber or EPDM material ? Since I can't stand on our camper roof, I don't have to be concerned with slipping :-)
@thunderbird97
@thunderbird97 6 лет назад
yes it can be used on those roofs, also noticed when I was in Yuma, AZ looked like I seen it on some shingle roofs

@@TravelswithYoly For starters thank you very much for doing this project and posting the video. I am inching closer to getting my ducks in a row to order my Eureka and I'm definitely going to do this tropicool treatment to it. And in the 2nd place I just wanted to mention that yes I know for a fact people use Henry tropic cool on mobile home roofs. That stuff has been in production for decades. When I was a teenager my grandmother lived in a mobile home with a flat roof and I remember my Uncle and I rolled out a full roof coating with that stuff on it and it really really helped with her electric bill in the summer.

Please mention to Donnie that my videos influenced your decision should you eventually get a Eureka and please let me know. thunderbird97 (above) used it on his motorhome so apparently it works on conventional RV rubber and EPDM roofs as well. I've had a silicone oven mitt for about a year and it never ceases to amaze me how efficient it is. Nothing I can't pick up with it, no matter how hot :-) I'd also add that having the cabover front windows that open are a necessary component for proper ventilation.

You did a great job! I bet that metal roof was hot. I wonder if that stuff helps with leaks too?
@thunderbird97

yes, very good stuff can put it on 5 mins before a rain, moisture helps it cure
@TravelswithYoly

You could have fried an egg on that roof in direct sun .... much too hot to touch :-) Since it is 100% waterproof I have to imagine it seals better than most caulks. I actually covered most of the original caulked seams as keeping them cool will prolong the life of the caulk .... also protect them from UV degradation and any water penetration. If your van has a metal roof, it would be worth looking into. I'm sure your van gets hot in that Texas sun.
@TheSoloAsylum

It's way better for leaks then it is for heat reduction. It wont do a thing for heat reduction.
@TreeLBollingTreeMan

@@TheSoloAsylum You stand corrected. it DOES work for heat reduction. Did you not watch the video?
@TheSoloAsylum
@TheSoloAsylum 4 года назад
@@TreeLBollingTreeMan I have the product, I have used it on my house. It does nothing for heat reduction, I am certain of this. I will stop leaks and it will quiet a metal roof but if you think you're going to drop the inside temp of a room, well go ahead and buy it...and then get back with me.

We sold the camper about 1 year after applying it. At that time the coating was just like new. No signs of deterioration or degradation anywhere. No drying out, cracking or discoloration anywhere.

The camper was quite new at the time and had been sitting in front of the house for a couple months getting rinsed nicely almost everyday with our heavy summer thunderstorms. I simply wiped it with a clean tee shirt soaked in a diluted mix of simple green and then rinsed it with a hose. As I mentioned, the roof before treatment would get extremely hot and dry off in a matter of minutes. I used a roller with a short extension and leaned off a step ladder placed along both sides of the camper (moving it along as I went). Quite awkward actually, twisting 90 degrees and leaning into the camper working the roller. That motion tweaked my back a bit for a couple days and I only fell off the ladder once (thankfully onto the grass) :-) I used a brush to do the vent covers and I had to lean out off the ladder and support my weight on my chest on the roof. I wouldn't have been able to do that prior to applying the treatment as the roof would have been too hot.

Sounds brutal...just about what I expected. Thanks.
@TravelswithYoly
@TravelswithYoly 6 лет назад
Now that I think about it, the hardest part was coming to grips with the flimsy roller paint tray. I gave up on it quite quickly and just poured 10 inch diameter puddles from the can and then rollered it till it was spread evenly. It doesn't spread like paint as it's much thicker and stickier. My task was made more difficult because of where I had positioned the camper in the first place. It was too close to the grass on one side and the ground sloped away there so it was very difficult getting the ladder steady. The ladder wanted to naturally fall away from the camper due to the slope and it didn't help with me pushing against it when I leaned in.
@paulsink2800
@paulsink2800 6 лет назад
That sounds like one of my projects. I'm thinking about getting one of those telescoping ladders from Amazon. It might work out OK for coating the roof...if I don't kill myself.
@TravelswithYoly
@TravelswithYoly 6 лет назад
I should have folded my ladder and leaned it against the camper like a telescoping ladder on the side that was sloping .... might have been safer. Good luck with your project and be careful :-)
