Today we explore this beautiful abandoned manor house that sits in the wide open English countryside.
Built in 1564, the second family to reside here held the estate for nearly 200 years, the last member of the family was beheaded for treason and the mansion passed to Henry the eighths widow, Catherine Parr.
It was eventually purchased from the crown and worked on a great deal, that is what we see here today, including the early English renaissance walled garden.
It was eventually inhabited by just one women right up until the second world war, after the war the council purchased the estate and it was then used as a children’s convalescent home.
The idea at the time was that poorly children would benefit from country or sea air, some would have stayed here for a few weeks, some a few years, tragically permanently disabled children where sometimes abandoned at these places.
Finally, it became a hotel in the 1960s and was still in business until June of 2020, after already going into administration, it was forced to closed its doors for good due to the pandemic...
Its neat hedges and tidy pathways still holding their shape, this may the final glimpse of this garden in its prime.
