Click to Like👌and SUBSCRIBE to our RU-vid Channel. We are adding plant videos all the time - lots of interesting and COLORFUL plants that are perfectly suited to our Mid-Atlantic & Northeastern USA region and this is a perfect example.
We grow a very wide range of plants from the tallest trees down to the tiniest of little perennials, and when it comes to small easy to grow perennials David thinks these "hens and chicks" are just about the most magnificent, hardy and fun things to grow. In this video he gets VERY creative, just like Nature.
🌱 They are rated Zone 3, so you don't need to worry about them in our region.
🌱 They require little or no maintenance.
🌱 They're fun plants to grow (especially with little kids that you'd like to encourage to be in the garden and doing outdoor projects).
🌱 And they're versatile!
As far as varieties go, there are many different sorts, with different colors (including some that change color during the year).
People have planted them in things like strawberry pots, old boots and chews, hanging baskets and all sorts of locations. In this video, David shows an interesting project showing how you can grow these in ROCKS! As he shows us, this is replicating what "hens and chicks" accomplish in nature, where they grow high up in the mountains with little or no soil, in rock crevices, and nooks and crannies. Surely you know a spot in your garden right now that would love a visit from some "hens and chicks".
Enjoy! Here's an unusual and neat way to grow Hens & Chicks on sandstone rocks.
Join David at Overdevest Nurseries and find out how you can create these small and engaging and EASY to LOOK AFTER features around you home.

They are truly niche plants. Holey sandstone. I have granite all around me. Where i come from they're called echeveria, & different varieties have different flowers. I used to think they were boring little plants, but now i find them quite adorable.

Thanks for watching. They are becoming very popular, and we are sure we don't need to tell you that they will look great in between rocky crevices of granite. So if you have a wall, raised bed, rock garden or anywhere that's sunny, gritty and well-drained, they will fit right in, thrive, be evergreen, and be a continual topic of conversation. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that will help other people find out about the information as well. And, now that we are in the midst of the main planting season (spring through late Fall) try to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there will be a steady stream of fresh shipments coming in weekly.

I know that series of plants and one thing I didn't hear him say, (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if those plants get more direct sun, they will color up so brightly!!! I saw a few "golden nugget" cultivars as well as the red varieties.

Thanks, the native habitats for "Semps" is on high up on rocky mountain tops where there is no shade, so out in the open in sunny conditions is where they will always do better in a variety of ways including having better color.

Thank you, that is very kind of you to say so! I suppose as time passes (and people discover it), this video will become more popular. However, it is pleasing to know that you found it interesting and hopefully it has inspired you to "have a go"! The neat thing about this idea is that you can do it almost anywhere outdoors, it doesn't need much space, the little plants are inexpensive, and once you get it completed, it is VERY EASY to look after! So, go on, have a go, and then let us know how you got on. Thanks again for taking the trouble to post your comment.

Thank you. This idea is quite unique, fun to do, and it works! But just make sure that whatever rock you choose is porous, absorbs water and the pockets you drill DO NOT fill with water.

Interesting idea. We are in zone three where it is very cold a good bit of the year. My hen and chicks are doing well in-ground, and it would be interesting to see if some could survive winter in something like this. Might be worth a try. :) I only agave one variety atm, but will also look for some others to add variation. I am trying to plant hardy perennials that are both drought and cold tolerant and the hens-and-chicks I have so far have been real troopers. :)
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 3 года назад
In nature they live in "next to nothing" in mountainous terrain at high elevations, where it gets very cold in winter and out in full sun in summer - so most sorts are naturally very tough and durable. So, as you suggest, trying a few (as a test) is worth doing.... and then based on your results, you can expand your plantings in all sorts of creative ways. Planting them in contrasting groups where the colors and changing seasonal patterns play off each other is very effective. I would encourage you to experiment with different rock, stone and gravel combinations too.

Is it possible to root these in water? I inherited some that belonged to my sweet mom who recently passed away. One had gotten quite leggy & had fallen over. I noticed the base of the stem seemed like it was dying so I pinched it off & let it dry for a few days & then planted it. It did nothing. Well...the stem looks bad again! So can I put it in water to root? Or would that just finish it off? Any suggestions? Thanks!
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 3 года назад
They don't like wet conditions, so you would be better to break off a piece and just set (pressed in gently) into a sandy compost. Then be patient, it will form new roots and form a new plant. That's how it works in nature.

Where do u get sand stone
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 года назад
It occurs naturally in our area, so it is relatively easy to find. But you might have to ask at your local garden center or landscape supply center. Other types of porous rock may also work, for instance if you come across any place that sells "tufa" a highly porous lightweight rock that is imported from Italy, it would probably work even better!
