Dr. Juan Carlos Q. Velez earned a medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru.
He completed residency in Internal Medicine at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, and a clinical and research fellowship in Nephrology at Emory University in Atlanta. Following his training, he joined the Division of Nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina where he worked for 11 years. He was then recruited by the Department of Nephrology at Ochsner Health in 2016.
Dr. Velez is currently the System Chair of Nephrology at Ochsner Health and a Professor of Medicine at Ochsner Clinical School / The University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia).
Dr. Velez has a background in federally-funded experimental research in the area of the intraglomerular renin-angiotensin system. Currently, his areas of primary expertise and ongoing clinical and translational investigation include diagnosis and treatment of hepatorenal syndrome and clinical applications of urinary sediment microscopy.
Dr. Velez is a member of the editorial board of American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Kidney360 and Annals of Internal Medicine Clinical Cases. He is an active medical educator in nephrology through podcasts and social media platforms.
