Portals Album (Title and the meaning behind the songs) 1. Death - All about process of dying and transition to afterlife where they are able to return to living world and interact with those they left behind 2. Void - Inner struggles, mental health and self reflection/judgement. The person is trying to escape the "Void" which is her thoughts and emotions that affects her mental health. 3. Tunnel Vision - About someone who is not interested in being objectified or pursued solely for their physical appearance or sexual appeal. The lyrics suggest that the person is aware of the superficiality of such attention and rejects it, choosing instead to focus on their own value and worth beyond physical appearance. 4. Faerie Soiree - I'm not sure about this one but I think it's about escaping reality and searching for sense of belonging. Losing sense of self through mixed emotions. It also talks about gender fluidity i think? 5. Light shower - finding someone who brings light and positivity into the the life of a person and helps them overcome their past struggles. Being cleansed and refreshed by this person's love and how it can heal emotional wounds. 6. Spider Web - It's about addiction or obsession to something (technology, social media or etc.) That leads a person's life to a lifeless existence. Being stuck in a cycle, surrounded by things that distract them from reality. 7. Leeches - About someone being surrounded by people who drain them emotionally and psychologically, like leeches. The person feels used and manipulated by those individuals, who are only interested in their own benefit and don't care about the damage they caused. Also talk about powerlessness because the person is unavle to escape or resist the "leeches" 8. Battle of the larynx - About standing up for oneself and not engaging in meaningless arguments or battles with others who are trying to provoke them. The person chooses to remain silent but if you cross the line, it's over, it's done. 9. The contortionist - Toxic relationship in which the person feels trapped and manipulated. Being tied up in knots emotionally and being pushed to their limits. The person is on their breaking point "I'M DONE!" and is ready to end the relationship. 10. Moon Cycle - About how women experienced and feel menstruation on the day to day basis and how it can affect their emotions. Being resilient despite the pain and discomfort, and criticism of others who underestimate or dismiss the impact of menstruation. Basically about strong "WOMANHOOD" 11. Nymphology - About rejecting the trope of being a "manic pixie dream girl" and instead embracing one's own identity as powerful and independent woman. The person rejects the idea of being a passive object of desire for men and call out the selfishness and ignorance of those who try to claim expertise in "nymphology" ( a made up term meant to mock the idea of reducing women to mythical creatures or an object of desire). It also references the idea of being too valuable and rare for others to afford or fully understand. 12. Evil - About the person finally deciding to end the relationship and moving on. The person is no longer willing to tolerate mistreatment or lies from the person they referring to. The person see themselves as "Evil" because they have finally stood up for themselves and they are being seen as "EVIL" by the person they left. 13. Womb - Being born again and revival after the "afterlife" (the emotional circus of life). Also describes the mother's suffering during process of birthing a child. The last part which is "life is death is life" depicts a cycle of life because it transitions to the first track "Death" which started with "Death is life is Death"

*INFORMATION ABOUT EACH SONG REVEALED BY MELANIE ON AN INTERVIEW* Death was written in her portal room (a special room in her old house where she wrote songs), and from what Mel said she had the title she wanted to use and tried to write it with different producers but she didn’t like it (being one of those attempts the One Love demo which was leaked before the release of the album) She started Void with a guitar loop from a previous voice memo she made days ago before recording the actual song and she cried while recording the lyrics, she didnt even have to think about them, its also self produced and written Tunnel Vision was written in Hawaii with Kinetics and One Love and she tried to add a few different meanings to the song, but the song got leaked the same year and she tried to re-write It but she really couldnt think of any better lyrics so it stayed the same besides some change in production For Faerie Soirée she asked her A&R to send her folders of tracks created by different producers, and after a while she found one by Hoskins, it was a groovy drum loop over a guitar top line, she loved it and wrote the song very quickly (also in her portal room) the demo was leaked the same year as it was recorded but she still decided to release it with some production changes. From Light Shower, she says is that its the first song she ever written from Portals and that she made the song with her guitar in the bathtub Spider Web is about social media, also she based a bit of hypnosis for this song (and also Light Shower) she also wrote It on her portal room, recorded a guitar voice memo and sent It to CJ Baran, Baran created an inst for the song the same exact day and he created a drop using his mouth Leeches was also made with one of the folder tracks (like Faerie Soirée) and at first was self produced (this demo leaked the same year as well) but she sent the song to CJ to finish it... The song was written in Los Angeles and the song itself is based on the people from Los Angeles Battle of the Larynx was the last song she wrote for the album. In May 2022 she went back to Hawaii in the same house she recorded Tunnel Vision this time with Baran and It was the last writing session before declaring the album finished. Mel wrote the song herself on her guitar (like Light Shower and others) and Baran added layers to make It better The Contortionist, she said that she will never forget all the smiles and feelings this song gave her. “A lot of our process making tracks then picking our favorites then going into the booth and free styling melodies piecing together the best moments and then i would pace around the pool writing lyrics to fit the cadance of the free-styled melodies” is what she said about this song. The laughs of the chorus are the same exact laughs of her freestyle Moon Cycle was also made in her Portal room and with one of the tracks of the folder (like Faerie Soirée and Leeches) A lot of info about the lyrics like "I wanted to make cute metaphors" And one of the stems of the song are her literal period cramps that she recorded and put in the chorus This song is also a kind of diss track on Oliver Tree, and the demo was leaked before the albums release Nymphology was written by Mel, Baran and Nick, they tried a lot of vibes but they liked this one a lot The outro of the song is actually called *Amulet* and It was produced by her boyfriend. At first they didnt wanted to make that transition but when her boyfriend was deleting old files that instrumental started playing and Mel LOVED IT so she decided to write a song over it, but It was hard to make a full song with that but she really liked... So she noticed that the last note of Nymphology was the first note of Amulet, so she decided to make It a transition Amulet also is a rewritten version of an unreleased song named “Emerald” that was scrapped from Portals About Evil, its her fav conflict song, Baran gave her a guitar loop and she placed around the pool and wrote the melody and everything in 30 minutes, It was really easy to write and mel says its cause of all the shit she went through in her last relationship (oliver tree, again) she tried writing the lyrics but everytime she wrote something she was like "No, this isnt mean enough!" It was also the most challenging song to sing For last Womb, she wrote the song in 2020 for After School EP in a session with Omer Fedi as a part of week of sessions she had with different people. The song at the start was just a guitar loop and the lyrics, but she thought the song would fit perfect on her next album. 2 years later Baran and Rhys add drums to the song to complete it and she put it as the last track

This is her best work fs. Her other albums we GODLY and this one is even better !!! I’m obsessed with this album

This album is a whole journey. All her albums have been so far but this one felt cathartic, I felt comfortable connecting to the inner darkness that I spend so much time avoiding. Melanie is a true artist in that she cause others to feel more at peace with the worst parts of themselves.

33:27 the whole point of the song moon cycle was to break the stigma surrounding periods and here ofc men are still calling it “gross.” it’s a natural part of a woman’s body & something girls have to deal with early as 7 years old. her singing about it was her way of shifting that negative narrative men made about our bodies!! guys need to grow up fr, it’s exhausting.
