Yes I have to always be forceful to get proper care from my doctor and ER. They believe black people, especially black women, don't feel pain.
@ArtTheSinger

Not to take anything away from black women. Black men have it hard as well to get care a lot of people don’t like and/or are afraid of black men and it transfer into medical care too. Right now I’m dealing with a health situation and I cannot find proper care. It’s a lot negative energy I get and I dismiss it to not try to dwell in it but its there.

Yeah my mom as an African American female was mis-diagnosed 3 different times at 2 different separate hospitals by doctors saying her face paralysis was sinus related and that her bulging eyes and constant cycle at 65 was her sinus. They kept prescribing her sinus and nasal medicine. After she and I both constantly told them it wasn’t her sinus. I ask them repeatedly to perform blood work to try to determine what was going on. They ignored our requests. After over a year of trying to get someone to listen and trying to get my mom to not give up trying to get help someone finally listen who happened to be a Medical STUDENT working in the ER when I finally got her to try again to get help. Because by this point she had to wear sunglasses even at night in the house because her eyelids couldn’t close. We found out during this last visit she had STAGE 4 Breast and Brain cancer and after she was diagnosed she passed away 7 weeks later. Sadly the Head Physician on duty in the ER that day came in to tell it us the diagnosis and also shared that had not the Medical Student advised that they do a CatScan the Head Physician would have assumed my mom’s issues were sinus related and provided her same diagnosis as the other doctors at the other hospitals. The difference between the season doctors and this young Medical Student name Christian was Christian actually LISTENED to my mom and spoke with her in detail to understand where she was hurting and where her pain was coming from. The season doctors just assume they knew the answer to what appeared to be text book symptoms. They’re more jaded and pompous so they don’t consider fully what the patient is experiencing. What was the kicker in all this is that the Medical Student was studying to be an Ophthalmologist. God knew who to put there for her at that time. Christian was there to assess that there was more going on behind her eyes then what he could see so he requested more be done and went to class that day. Not knowing he was able to bless my mom with finally getting an answer to her health problems. Although she passed she was always grateful to know ahead of time what was going on as she knew something was wrong with her body although those who are TRAINED for such matters were utterly clueless. Christian recognizing something was going on behind her eyes is what revealed the brain cancer which lead them to do more test which also revealed breast cancer. Once my Mom was admitted they discovered her body was riddled with cancer throughout her body. Thank you Christian for listening to my Mom. I’m forever grateful that you gave her this gift.

OMG. Im glad she is on her way to getting better. My issue was in my reproductive organs which the doctor always equated to an STD(even though I'm abstinent) finally found a holistic Dr. in the DC area that ordered an MRI which revealed adenomyosis/endometriosis, chocolate cyst, and a large fibroid. Ten years all they did was tell me how they didn't know what was wrong. Trying to treat me with a pill when I needed a WHOLE surgery. I actually cried tears while watching this show. I've been going to the dr for several years. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia approx 15 years ago. I stopped working in 2015. My health is declining worst every year. I keep telling my dr my symptoms but the blood test says I don't have an autoimmune disorder. My dr thinks I do have an autoimmune disorder BUT the blood work says I don't. So he's stuck on I can't treat what I don't see. I saw a pain management dr 1 week ago and she said I've been misdiagnosed. All my symptoms describes hashimoto according to pain management dr. She suggested I ask my dr to do my blood work again. Once again my blood work is in the normal range. My dr said he'd run my blood work again next year. Meanwhile I'm struggling to stay encouraged because no one has listened to ME. MY body is screaming something is wrong. I did schedule a follow-up with pain management next month in hopes she'll help me. I have read you can have an autoimmune illness and it take years to show up. Please pray for my strength to keep fighting.

My first experience with medical gaslighting was when I was 25 and had three ”periods” a month. I was so miserable, to say the least. When I went to my doctor to seek help, guess what Doctor Dummy told me…” It’s nothing to worry about, it’s completely normal!” That was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life! Thanks to prayer and a holistic way of living, I now have one period a month, and just like God, she’s always on time!😊

When I was in my early 20s I stopped having a cycle. I mentioned this to my obgyn (who was revered as one of the best in the area at the time). She just put me on birth control to regulate my cycle. After YEARS of being ignored (I'm 42 now), I was told I had PCOS and no longer ovulate. I've since had a total hysterectomy due to endometrial cancer, but I was never taken seriously when I voiced my concern and made it clear that I wished to have a family some day. And now I can't (naturally). Same thing happened with my thyroid. A basic blood panel showed nothing was wrong. I was finally properly diagnosed with hypothyroid in 2016 after years of misdiagnosis. We HAVE to be advocates for our own health. It is so frustrating that we even have to have this conversation.

I know about that condition. About 35 years ago my Godmother Minnie (she was in her 60’s) couldn’t hold her nose down without her nose running profusely. They ran tests for months. One doctor finally said “this is not normal.” He ran additional tests and discovered her brain fluid was leaking through her nose. They operated and put some type of metal plate in her head. She did fine for about 5 years. Then her nose started running again, and they went back in her head again. This time it never came back. I advise women if they notice something unusual about their body or body functions, please contact doctors and specialists until they find out what is going on. God bless you all!!

Lawsuits need to be filed against quack doctors for medical malpractice after complaints are reviewed with the medical boards (MBs). Most MBs will do nothing to doctors even if a patient dies. A lawsuit would make patients think twice before choosing sued doctors. Doing nothing is not an option because others will become victims of reckless doctors.

I’m a PA with over 20yrs experience. I was very shocked when I finished school how many providers gas light. I was let go from one of my jobs because my supervisor felt “I didn’t know how to BS the patients”, of course they didn’t put that reason on paper but a friend told me this among other things were being said. Genuine, caring providers get discarded in the current medical environment. I absolutely hate being a PA because you can’t really practice genuine medicine any more. It’s all about money. They want you to rush through and see as many patients as you can. I just quit another job on the spot 2 days ago, an urgent care job because they told me I needed to see at least 50 patients per day, 10hr shift mind you… they are crazy, I walked out. What kind of care is that for me or the patient.

After I had my baby, about four days of being home I woke up one morning with swollen legs, ankles, and feet. I’m the type of person that will immediately go to the doctor if I see something abnormal going on with my body. I went to the hospital that delivered my baby and they checked my BP. It was high and they kept giving me different reasons as to why. They sent me home on a water pill. By the time night came, my blood pressure was higher and I was still swollen. God gave me the feeling to go to another hospital. I went to the nearest emergency clinic. It was other people in the waiting room but they came and got me first. I started getting a bit worried. They took my BP and rushed me into a room. They began to hurriedly take my clothes off and hook me up to an EKG. They put an IV in my arm and they did blood work. The nurse immediately started giving me meds to bring my blood pressure down. I think it was in the 180s, mind you it’s usually in the 114s. I’ve NEVER dealt with high blood pressure before in my life. The doctor comes back with the blood results. I told him what happened with the hospital that I went to earlier. He said “Im glad you came here when you did. You’re on the verge of having a seizure and stroke” I looked at my friend that brought me to the hospital. She looked frightened and I was in complete SHOCK. He said he was going to have to refer me to their hospital and admit me immediately. He said he was going to chat with the doctor that sent me home to see why they didn’t admit me so it doesn’t happen again. He genuinely looked angry. This was Christian clinic and hospital so I definitely believe God led me to them. Mind you I had just had my newborn baby. Im thinking, will my baby have a mother to raise her? Over the four weeks I spent at the hospital, I genuinely thought I wouldn’t make it. My BP finally went down after tweaking my meds multiple times. Scariest time of my life health wise besides me having Covid. I usually never get sick so it was terrifying. It was Postpartum Preeclampsia btw. Anyways BW really do go through it when it comes to getting the care they need in these hospitals. It just doesn’t get talked about enough.

My stories: 1. When I had my first child over 30 yrs ago my water broke on a Saturday and the hospital sent me home. When I went back the next day I was fully dilated for 2days before the doctor finally performed a c-section and on I y because my mom threatened to sue him. My baby coded 3 times. He is now a husband and father of three beautiful daughters. 2. I was injured and was sent to therapy for 2 whole months before they finally did an MRI. The doctor came into my session and yelled STOP DON'T TOUCH HER ITS WORSE THAN I THOUGHT! I had a bad bulging disk that was hitting my spinal cord and by this time I was having difficulty walking. I was immediately taken off work and had to have a neck fusion surgery. I was off work 8months. 3. I had been complaining about pain in my neck, middle and lower back since 2017. I couldn't get my doctor to prescribe pain meds. Yet I would see friends of another race be prescribed for trivial stuff. Well it turns out I finally got the help I needed on May 4, 2022 I had C4-5 fusion. The neurosurgeon said I had a severe case. A chunk of bone broke off and was hidden from MRI. The surgery I mentioned in 2. After having neck fusion some times you'll need another down the road and that's what happened. I finally got them to listen about middle and lower back. I have a compression fracture mid back and a L bulging disk. Waiting for my insurance to approve Ablation and injections..... Found out last week insurance denied it. So doctor resubmitted it. Praying it's APPROVED.....

Even when my 9yr old said “Oh it could be Spinal Fluid (we looked up potential issues)” the doctor said “no if it was that, you wouldn’t be walking or driving”. Fast forward to less than a year later, I was in the hospital for 2months and had 2 brain surgeries and nasal surgeries.

Wow. She has blessed me. Doctors, especially women and most black women doctors don't take black women seriously. All doctors as told to me but another woman doctor at the Houston Veteran affairs hospital, don't listen. Forced this past week to go into the emergency room and was greeted by four of the kindest doctors who temporarily restored my faith in the system to allow them to admit me, but the issue I've been telling doctors about since before I left the military in 1992 STILL exists. This lady has inspired me to do something about my overlooked issues. Thank you Tamron for having her on

I am not African American but I had a similar experience. The doctor I went to delayed surgery for two years. I nearly lost my sight in one eye as a result, but thank the Lord, I was introduced to a doctor who did take me seriously. I was operated on 7 days after I saw the second doctor. My sight is still not great in that eye but at least I am not blind. I have not looked back since, pardon the pun. In my opinion, race is not an issue because I do not live in the US. There are medical doctors all around the world who may be jaded, skeptical or just plain incompetent but still practicing medicine. I really think that proper annual evaluations are needed to ensure doctors are on the straight and narrow, plus are for patients-- not against them. My heart goes out to you Amira. I am so glad you finally received the right diagnosis and treatment and are well today. God bless.

My mom told me that my grandma would tilt her head down and spinal fluid would gush out. It took many tests and specialists to find what was wrong. She ended up having several surgeries on her head but to God be the Glory she’s still with us in 2022 at 79 years young! The sad part is 40+ years later, we are still dealing with health disparities, particularly as it relates to people of color.

This is why I learned after giving them (medical professionals) a couple of chances, to be adamant about telling the doctors what to do about my health. Because they are human too, they don't always get it right. We should always research for ourselves about our bodies and health. And almost be forceful with the doctors about blood work, ct scans, ekg's etc., with follow up results. Especially in this day and time with so much going on. @@natashabranagan7169 For me, I just don't take what some docs say as always correct. For my fibroid situation (2nd time around), I got 3 denials for procedures all reasonable. However, bc most docs start with age, status they just wanted to relegate me to the most invasive procedure. Using a certain standard of questions to get to get me to consider only ONE option of their choice. I held my ground and declined. Eventhough time may have passed and the situation of Fibroids got more painful. I researched and spoke to one of my spiritual Bestie coworkers. She had a procedure performed, which too can be very reasonable for me and the Provider opting to perform it has mastered it. He DID NOT, discount my age and status JUST to make me succumb to something I strongly am against which is way too invasive for my liking. So I said all that to say, being your best advocate is researching all avenues, talking to others, asking pertinent questions of Providers so you understand all the mechanics around any procedure, symptoms etc... Then don't be afraid to seek out second, third or e rn fourth opinions from different Providers for that condition. Bottom line too stand strong in your stance to hold Providers accountable. Not always easy and sometimes depleting. But you just don't want any Provider doing anything you are not comfortable with. Or, they are not fully trying to research really the BEST care for YOU. Especially for Black women, sometimes they presume what the collective should receive vs what the individual is conveying is their needs and or issues (ending where I started😊) Good luck to you and pls feel empowered to be your BEST advocate💛

@@natashabranagan7169 Sorry too. Let me go where I really should have started. I am sorry, you have gone thru this for so long. If that Neuro provider has never referred you for any type of test... MRI, CT, EEG, then he or she may not be the right Neuro. You need to research others in your area, one that will listen to your concerns, try to assess any symptoms stemming from it, then look for applicable procedures which may be useful to see where the issue is emanating from. Only way to tell that is by one or all of the tests mentioned above. Having had migraines and gone to Neuro providers. I can tell you having the procedure made me aware of a childhood (non lethal) cyst I must have been born with at the base of my skull. Please press whatever Neuro provider you see, to consider sending you, if you have not already. Clarity for the best course of action, is always key. Even when the news may not be what we expect.
