Moral soldier isn't a literal soldier. He's talking about people who feel it is their duty to uphold righteousness, doing so by proclaiming their acts to be proper, backed up with book burnings of immoral material. Funny how every listener seems to interpret the lyrics differently

"Hey moral soldier you've got righteous proclamations & precious tomes to fuel your pulpy conflagrations" This is about how religious people take positions of moral authority based on their holy books. They see themselves as moral soldiers, and that their proclamations are right. and their holy book (the bible, the Torah, Quoran..etc) fuel their rants in the pulpit of their churches or temples, these are sometimes falled "fiery speeches from the pulpit", therefore "pulpy conflagrations"
@chrisvanderwielen1530
@chrisvanderwielen1530 Месяц назад
The mistake is thinking that's strictly about religion. It's about anyone who staunchly believe their position is the only correct one. One of the meanings of 'pulpy' is 'sensationalistic'... that's not proprietary to religion. Just about every social-cause, now days, is delivered with a sensationalistic rhetoric.

Great interpretations of the song! One thing: “pulpy conflagrations” seems like it is likely a double entendres, where pulpy is both “trashy” or “worthless” and also meaning “pulp” like a pulp mill which produces paper that books are printed on, which the aforementioned tomes are printed on.

They are fueled by their holy books and heroic fantasy of saving the world. This results in burning books.

The lyrical and sonic build-up to the punchline "with a quick wink of the eye, and a 'god you must be joking!'" Was the moment that I became a fan for life. It's just perfect.

Pulpy has a double meaning as does that whole line. A book is made from tree pulp. Your interpretation is right on, while it also is eluding to burning books as fuel to propagate more war.

Yeah, that's where the term, "Pulp Fiction" came from, cheaply made comics and magazines with stories meant to tantalize and surprise readers because they were made so cheaply and there were so many, it was the first "Shock" genre, so you had writers and artists doing crazier and crazier stuff...which is why Tarantino made Pulp Fiction the way he did, random stuff happening, time jumps, multiple storylines...just as the "Pulp" comics of yesteryear...

About the "Hey moral soldier" line, I've always read it as the moral soldier being somebody forcing their views on others using what they see as "righteous" reasons, using their holy book ("precious tomes") to justify keeping or taking information away from people (pulpy conflagrations being books made out of paper pulp burning)

"And precious tomes to fuel your pulpy conflagrations" also has one more literal meaning: Book burning. Either as a metaphor for censorship and control of information and literal banning and burning of books.

Mika's on-the-fly analysis of the lyrics are so much to watch! I just found the channel, and I'm binging through these Bad Religion reactions (onto Rise Against next!). PLEASE have her listen to Epiphany, from The Process of Belief. I got into Bad Religion with American Jesus, but the lyrics in Epiphany are what sold me on the band for life. I remember being thirteen and checking in online dictionaries for every other word. It felt great to have finally found music with something to say. Still my favorite band 15+ years later!

This song is my one of my favorites of all time for how it is both a critique of how things are now and how people think it would be all too easy to fix everything. Also! 5:16 I think along with how you interpreted it, I think that it is also a reference to book burnings.

Now hit 'er with some NOFX. She seems to be digging the political & religious themes in Bad Religion, so I'd recommend "We Called it America", "The Idiots Are Taking Over", or (if she's feeling brave and you have some time to kill), "The Decline". edit: Classic Metal and 90s Punk are my favorite musical genres, how did I not find this channel sooner? Subbed, gonna go check out y'alls back catalog!

Fun video, I'm always glad to see people exposed to Bad Religion... one note, there's a heavy dose of Sarcasm to the chorus, they're not actually saying they want to conquer the world and remake it, they're pointing out the foolishness of anyone thinking they can single-handedly fix everything

Greg is very intelligent and well educated as you mention, and has written many fantastic lyrics. However, Brett Gurewitz wrote many of Bad Religion’s songs and I am pretty sure he wrote I Want to Conquer the World. Brett doesn’t have a college degree. Just reiterating Mika’s point.

@brandonjames412

I'd think that more appropriate for Brett's songs. Greg is absolutely a lyrical genius, but he tends to be much more literal than Brett. The Gray Race (album) is an excellent example; even the songs that incorporate a good deal of metaphor (examples such as "Cease," and "Parallel") are still pretty on the nose with what they want to get across; most of the album is 100% literal, classic Greg thesaurus punk.
