I'm German. And as such, I find it sad that the German language alone is associated with a criminal regime. The truth is that the German language is almost unique in its depth, precision and emotionality. It is not for nothing that it was German romantics, writers and philosophers who shaped world history for centuries. In this song and these lyrics you can see another example of this...
The irony is that the true depth of the lyrics are incomprehensible for non-speakers. That's what makes it so difficult to explain the beauty of the German language: you will only understand once you're fluent enough to read the captions knowing that important parts of meaning just didn't make it into English. What you initially state about the association with the 3rd Reich has a nuance often forgotten by Germans: the "fear" stems from an acknowledgement of the power of the language. Abstract, metaphorical language (like Obama's "yes we can") can only go so far. German has the ability to create concrete concepts on a level not reproducible in English. So yes, what allowed German-thinking writers to create incredible masterpieces is what allowed the masses to be captivated by megalomaniac, genocidal rhetoric.
@@neoanwow ok, think I habe to appreciate our language a bit more, always thought it's quite a harsh and just weird tone, but the history behind it I have to look up now, thanks for that und liebe Grüße aus Österreich🇱🇻
@@dvox4361 not to me, I love German, we watched movies on the German tv, that's how I learned most of my German vocabulary.... one of my favorite pick me up songs when I just need to laugh is 257ers 'Holland' and ofcourse I like electric callboy. Grüße von die Niederlanden
@@christelsegbars1630 Correct me if I am wrong, but Dutch is very similar to German in many aspects, isnt it? So maybe not a surprise.^^ Almost just like an extreme dialect at times. Ik woon in Duitsland.- Ich wohne in Deutschland. :D f.e. So close.
We can thank his daughter (nine years old when her mother passed) that he came back to the stage and still makes big concerts (today he is 67 years old and his breakthrough-album has its 40th anniversary this year). Only a few days after his wife passed his daughter said to him: "Daddy, you won't stop singing. Promise me." And this concert was about four years after the passings of his brother and wife. Watch other videos from this concert (this video was part of a concert DVD which is fully published on youtube). This was one of the few moments of grief. The whole lot of the other songs he celebrated the biggest party he ever had on stage. 60.000 people in the arena rolled over him with love. Sometimes you can see him cry happy tears.
Watch especially the song "Mensch". And watch the video to the very end. After he sang this song something amazing happened with the crowd. But very heartwarming amazing.@@shahinreacts. By the way: Both songs, "Der Weg" and "Mensch" are on every setlist of his concerts until today.
@@wolliwolfsen291 The subtitles are not auto-generated and are actually extremely good. They translate the meaning of the words. What they can't convey, though, is the pure poetry in his words. But trust me, the subtitles are really good. Many things just don't translate into other languages without losing context and/or meaning.
He lost his beloved wife and his brother nearly at the same time. Terrible losses....And I always begin to cry when I hear the song because of the beauty of the melody, the harmonies and the arrangement. And the lyrics are so captivating
He even wrote the songs for this album to process the death of those two. I think, that's where the deepness comes from. Besides, his songs from before or after that time are also very good.
First time that I heard this song on the radio when it had just come out I had to pull over at the side of the road because I had to cry so hard. He made all of Germany weep with him for his wife‘s passing.
So true, my boss made us all hear his music all day long! Grönemeyer is a real treasure and I loved all of the songs on Mensch! There's no sampler I heard this often....
We played this song at the funeral of my sister, who passed away just 49, after a battle of 3 years with cancer. I will always be grateful to Grönemeyer that we had his song to express our emotions.
...3, 2, 1... and I'm crying. Listening for a thousandth time, still can't hold back tears. Thank you for your honest reaction. Thank you Herbert for giving this to the world
I‘ve been at many Grönemeyer concerts. Nobody sings this song loud in respect of Herbert‘s wife. We all sing this song very quiet and everbody remembers his/her loved one they‘ve lost. It‘s very emotional and a special part of Grönemeyers show.
This song reminds me of my dad who passed the same year Herbert played his comeback tour with THIS song. But it was only several years later when I heard this song and all of a sudden I broke down in tears thinking about my dad. Until this day I never showed any feelings or emotions and thought I was long done with this... However, from this day on I listend to this song every now and then and cry my heart out ... thank you Herbert for this wonderful song!
Hi beautiful human, this song is just now on my radar, I'm Dutch but love this , so pretty in German, I want this on my funeral, es war een stuck from himmel das es dich gibt... danke and a warm hug from the Netherlands ❤❤
Same. There are exactly two songs I start crying immediately when I hear them. One is „Der Weg“ by one of Germany‘s greatest poets of today and the other is „ The Golden Boy“ Early version by Freddie Mercury.
One of the hardest Songs I know. The history behind the Song. The Lost! The Poesy. It is so sad,, it is so beautiful. It is so real! It is a banger which make you cry! No matter which Country
One of the best proofs, EVER! ... for the deep Power of Love. This song, performance were born from true love - no "tactical clever Plan", behind it. We all always ask for the true meaning of life, itself. Here, we found the Answer. Greetings and much love to all my Sisters and Brothers!
His voice transmits all his feelings and emotions, literally embracing and uniting his deep suffering with all the love he feels within. Grönemeyer is a LEGEND! Greetings from Germany/Belgium ❤️
I always burst into tears the second I hear only the first chords of this song. I am not really a huge fan of Grönemeyer, but this song always, ALWAYS gets me. The words and the music are meaning- and powerful.
grönemeyer is not only the best selling german artist (in germany) in his early days he played the leading role in one of the most iconic war movies "das boot". a good guy.
I my opion, that´s one of the greadest lovesongs ever, and to play it in front of such a crowd, when she is gone,..... cancer , and this song was writen after her sufferring, these words are mindtouching and give hope, for people like u an me, thrugh all nation and religions, everone who lost this one that was loved so much to deside, with u I go to my live understand these song and words......
Heard it thousands of times - this song never stops touching me. Knowing the feelig of having lost someone it's not possible to avoid it. I have been to a concert of this tour. It was incredible.
Walter, it's a pleasure to follow you. And you asked for special songs - believe us, these are beautiful songs whose beauty you understand and hear immediately in the first lines. Glashaus - Kraft Glashaus - Fühlt sich wie sterben an Maxime - meine Soldaten Xavier Naidoo - 20.000 Soldaten. Trust me - every Song will let you understand ❤ All my love to you...
I can assure you that the German lyrics are the true gem of the song, much better than the translation, so precise about his emotions. What a song, what a poet.
💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Sometimes you wonder why you hear a particular song at a certain time. This week was the 10th anniversary of my mother's death. (She died of a severe stroke)
What is a good singer? Someone with perfect pitch and 3 octaves ranges but sounds terrible because his songs aren't good, or someone with an unique voice, singing so heartwarming that almost all cried once hearing this song? He doesn't have a wide range, but still is considered one of the best Artists in Germany. With many number 1 hits. Maybe he is loved so much because he sounds normal and not pitch corrected.
@@SoneaT Singer is defines the ability to sing... Artist is about the songs, ability to perform and so on. He is a great artist, just not a great singer. Thats just facts, no hate. I love him, but dont be delusional.
This song was mainly for his wife. The song afterwards at the concert: Mensch was for both of them and it's equally as beautiful. Then you have Zum Meer for his kids about their moms death. That album is so filled with emotions it's mind boggling. No wonder why it's the most sold album in German language history.
Great lyrics. German doesn't sound nice, but honest and authentic. Grönemeyer has always hit me in the hear: "Life isn't fair", he sings, it's raw and brings out the innermost. So does the German language. I love the fact that feelings don't need language. Being human has nothing to do with geographical location, but rather with the location of the heart. My greetings go out into the world. It's great that music brings us together in this way.
If ever there has been a love song, that‘s it. I remember still the Moment I heardt it first, some morning in 2003, on my way to work, can‘t stop crying… it‘s about his wife, died 1997? 1998 because of cancer,
Herbert Grönemeyer and his wife Anna had two children at the time she died. Marie and Felix had been 9 and 11. It was a shock to Germany that this young mother and wife of one of our greatest artists did not beat breast cancer. Each person suffered with them and knew everybody can be in the next second in the real nightmare does not matter how hapoy you are together.
Herbert Grönemeyer is a trained theater pianist. When a director had to fill a musician's role, he took him on stage and the musician became an actor. He became internationally known through the film "Das Boot", which was the start of a career for many. Herbert decided to give up acting and, despite two unsuccessful albums, to just make music. His third album at least made it into the charts, but the label terminated his contract early due to lack of success. He released his fourth album on another label, which reached number 1 in the German album charts, like all the following ones. More than 96 Weeks in German LP-Charts (LP: "Mensch"), most famous singer in Germany since "Bochum" ^^ After the death of his half-brother and his wife, it took him a year to get over it. But he has two children and giving up was not an option. Today he is remarried.
Herbert Grönemeyer is also an actor. Maybe you have heard of the 1981 film "Das Boot" directed by Wolfgang Petersen. Grönemeyer played one of the main roles in it. If you have the opportunity to watch the film, I would recommend it.
It is so touching how much you got captivated by the song. I guess, the lyrics have been translated automatically? Some of the translations were literally wrong, and others did not get the correct meaning from a variety of possible translations. I am still happy that you could understand and feel them on a different level. Music in fact, *is* a universal language. If you are not touched by this song you have a heart made of stone. I don't know, if you already have reacted to "Mensch" by him, it is pretty emotional, too, and so lyrical. I also recommend "Wir werden uns wiedersehen" and "Von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit"by "Selig". But I could not find any version with lyrics or lyrics, that were correctly translated. In fact, there are so many real good German songs and musicians. But they are usually hard to (automatically) translate since there are a lot of word plays that can't be translated.
He wrote another song for his wife. Mensch is the name of it. There is a 9.56-minute-long video that you should watch till the last second. You will not believe the immense love he receives from the crowd. Please watch it: Mensch, live at Gelsenkirchen, 2003 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OEbMoYOpfeY.htmlfeature=shared
There's also a Dutch version (but more soft and smooth), sung by famous Dutch singer Guus Meeuwis (same title in Dutch: "De Weg") - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vuGcIfMq65A.html (from original Guus Meeuwis channel) - by the way... check out some more music from him, he made very emotional songs, sad ones same as happy ones. The song which made Guus popular in 1995 was 'Het is een nacht (Leevensecht)' ... much fun with discovering :)

There are two german artists, who write the deepest lyrics today. Herbert Grönemeyer and Udo lindenberg. Both are notorious for not having any real talent for singing. They just write epic lyrics and than barking or mumbling them out to us.
