We Walked my brother out to this song. He died in Raumanga river in whangarei. His body washed up at the Hihiaua Maori Cultural Centre. I’m glad he did, as they blessed and cleansed him xoxoxo
I cry sometimes when I see this video. Grew up in Rotorua amongst Te Arawa, and such Aroha I have not seen since, except from Jesus himself. I was a Pakeha kid, but loved Taha Maori and they just took me in and taught me. When we went to Marae visits, other kids would be playing and I'd hang around the Kuias until they set me to work peeling potatoes or weaving Roro baskets. But all the time they were talking, telling stories, gossiping, laughing. And always they were so kind, those Kuias. Then when the work was done, we'd have a cup of tea and bikkies and they'd smoke and tell stories. And I remember the smell of boiling pork and puha, potatoes and pumpkins. This was just a boil up, an ordinary luinch. Hangis were even better! Mum was there in the kitchen helping as well and she'd always say "Why don't you play with the other kids?" But the other kids used to bully me, and so I'd just hang around the oldies!
Congratulations HERBS, inducted into the New Zealand Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, 13/10/2012. Well deserved. Thank you for being the soundtrack to the lifetime of a nation.
WOW! This clip was filmed in 1987. 20yrs later this clip is uploaded to RU-vid (2007). A full 30yrs later it's now 2017 and this song is still as beautiful now as it was then. Rock on Herbs. Love from Melbourne.
i'm not maori but will always love this song, the herbs will live forever! well done for posting this clip up i grew up with this song and neva get sick of it ox
Very Sad, I will always love the beautiful music made by Herbs and Sensitive to a Smile is a standout Iconic Kiwi Anthem. Rest in Peace Kiwi 🥝 Music Legend Willie Hona from HERBS. 🌿😢
Most incredible band the Herbs. I get emotional every time. What a time in New Zealand, never again will we pass this time again. So privileged I was there during this time.

timeless song, i have great respect for these musicians, charlie tumahai was family and i still love listening to his music from be bop delux through to n.z icons and true legends HERBS, keep jamming!!!
Loved Ruatoria when I was a kid. Running around barefoot until we heard that high pitched whistle and knew Dads calling time to go home ❤ Beautiful waiata ❤
my two neices are Ngati Porou...they [east coasters] are the nicest and most welcoming people ive come across in my life...much respect for Te Araroa and its people i went there as a 16 yr old white skinhead and left very humbled..will go back one day.
Grew up in Aus not knowing much about my people all I knew is that we all were connected by music and ofc the water went back home with mum and my older brother and sisters to find and learn my culture and other things I forgot about, I’m still only young 14 been learning about our culture and much more since I was 10 learned to speak fluent Te Reo couldn’t be any more happier with my progress this song means a lot cause it was the first song that made me want to take my journey into my culture🙌🏽🙌🏽🖤
And what gets me is that although no one had any money, no one went hungry and no one was homeless! Te Whanau cared for their own! If you were away, your Whanau would look after your place...mostly! There were always lots of Aunties and Cuzzies and Kuias to help look after Nga Mokopuna and if any of them were making trouble then Mum and Dad were going to hear about it, for sure and then Boy were you in trouble!
At the time, I was a kid and a Pakeha kid at that, so I didn't have a lot to do with the whole Rasta thing. In Rotorua it was always Nga Puhi versus Te Arawa and Mungies versus Black Power. I think a lot of the Rasta thing was stirred up by the Bacon Patrol for the sake of having a War. The Rastas that I have met as an adult are a real peaceful bunch. Yeah, they'll stand up for themselves but you've gotta stir them, they won't start a fight. Mum and Dad went to the Maori Presbyterian Church in Western Heights, Rotorua, and Dad was a Maori speaker. He was a former missionary to the Yamatji people of Western Australia and also spoke their language, which is Wadjarri. He found the Pakeha churches to be quite racist and was not into labelling tribal culture as evil, like a lot of Pakeha religious types tend to. I remember him commenting that there were also a lot of racist Maori out there who hated all Pakeha, and he used to watch Te Karere to keep up with what was going on there. But as a nation, both Mum and Dad loved the Maori people, because they could see that there was so much Aroha.
And at an Iwi level and a Gang level, it could get real serious real quick. If you were Nga Puhi and lived in Rotorua, you kept real quiet about it. If some folks found out, they might burn your house down for you!
my father use to love this song ,he would smile their was a joy i was too young but for him that's how he remembered Maori growing up .He use to tell me how Maori was spoken everywhere and now i see our people alot different i see what he means now...
The first 45 I ever bought and still my all time favourite waiata. I feel my heart ready to explode with pride and longing every time I hear it and I feel drawn towards home when ever I watch the video. I miss riding bareback, swimming at the beaches and in the rivers - having that freedom that our kids don't have today. Knowing that no matter what, you would have a bed that night - not necessarily at your home as you just went with the flow. Everyone was your cuzzie, whether blood or not. There was kindness everywhere but if you played up, someone would have a jandal at the ready to put you in your place.
This song reminds me of when I was kid growing up in the 80s...times have changed...people dont seem as genuine as back then...got to see these legends at Raggamuffin this year...was awesome. Bless up Herbs
