I'm not reading all that but - this is theater. These Disney characters are regularly played by performers that are a different color than what you see in the cartoons. This is how theater is cast and these productions are global. Also, gender bending is super common on stage. See children's classics " Peter Pan", "Matilda", "Cinderella", "Frozen" - and near every Shakespeare play ever written. Go back to superhero movies.

@@msanjelica So are you saying if they made a Broadway production of The Princess and the Frog, and they cast a white Princess Tiana and an asian Prince Naveen, you think that will go well with most people and you think that is ok? In small community theaters, I kinda understand it, since the amount of people applying for those roles are limited. But big productions where a lot of actors competing for a role, that is bs. It is like saying every white male actor in Broadway (or off-Broadway) are just below average in talent. It is obviously trying to cause a stir, because these big companies, like Disney, they just want the attention and publicity. And it yields laziness too, since they resort to race-swapping instead of making appropriate new materials for POCs. Answer this, name me any big Disney fairytale/fantasy animated movie (that is not tv movie) that is based on African fairy tale or folklore? Princess and the Frog is from a German fairytale, while Lion King, though based in Africa, it doesn't have people, so race is irrelevant, and it is loosely based from Hamlet, so another European story.

@@owens5737 I agree, just that most people in these type of arguments/discussion will always throw that assumption, "oh you're white that why you are annoyed or offended", so I guess I put it there, just that they won't bother saying that.

@@hihi-heart I care that my community cries for representation for itself and not for others. At the end of the day, I couldn't care if an Lea Salonga was in the Color Purple. The fact that not a single Asian/East Asian/Middle Eastern/Etc. has been race swapped for any big Disney product being shipped out is as telling as it will ever be that my culture is being used like cows at a meat packing industry.

But my points below still stand. I'm assuming your part of the Greek or Roman community. If so, getting Greek/Roman-only actors is extremely extra, especially in the US. What's the benefit? Black women played the Muses in the original movie, so it makes sense that they'd be at least black women in the stage show. Disney would get a ton of bad press if they didn't. And that casting decision was to make it clear from scene one that this is a retelling of Hercules, not a reinactment, and that they're going to take creative liberties. This is just an extension of that. Also, your "Lea Salonga in The Color Purple" hypothetical is just weird. That story has plenty to do with the race of the characters. A better example of poor casting regarding race would be all-white productions of Once on This Island or Pacific Overtures, or Asian productions of Hairspray where the black characters are given tan makeup, modern blackface. All stories that have something to do with the race of the characters. Hell, when Lea Salonga was casted in Once On This Island, a voodoo retelling of The Little Mermaid, they needed to make her character a nurse to explain why she's there. Even then, in the actual story of the show, she only played a god, not a villager, so they didn't need to exclude the "black as night" line, like the all-white productions. The closest thing to your hypothetical turned out great!

Mate. It's theater, this is nothing new. Just go back to the MCU. All that matters is if they can do the role.
