@@ABowlofPho well, i haven't conducted a test as rigorously as out of spec does, but I generally drive between 70-75 mph. Also, i dont drive down to 0% soc, I determine my total range by multiplying the kWh remaining in the battery at whatever SoC I do charge at, by the trips mi/kWh and adding that to miles driven since last charge.

I owned the XC40 for 1 year and now the Tesla Model Y for 4 months. The Tesla with its charging network is fantastic but if the Volvo had 350 miles I would go back to the Volvo. The quality, the smooth quiet ride and even though the screen is smaller and Tesla has great software the Volvo did some things better with the Google based system. Lower price, increase range would put it toward the top in my opinion.

We bought the XC40 Recharge and it is a fantastic commuter, especially with charging at both of our workplaces provided for free. Everything about it is perfectly refined as such, IMO. No fast charging needed we actually limit the charging to 30 amps even at home where we charge overnight when needed.

To me this is emergency range. Considering the driving dynamics changed drastically for the last several miles, I wouldn’t really count that as range. I would want the car to drive as normal until I get to 0 miles of range and then maybe have a buffer where I could drive to a charging station if I needed to. I live in Oregon and drive down to Southern California to visit family. It’s about 750 miles so the range on this would require a lot of charging considering you are starting at around 200 miles and then after that even less as you won’t charge to 100 %. So this would be great for driving locally, but I wouldn’t want to deal with it for long trips.

Love the range test. How bout a range test on normal driving, rather than consistent 70mph? Also on 20-80% charging instead of 0-100%. For example, driving from LA to Las Vegas, one is confronted with driving at 80 mph slow lane (75 is "limit"), but have to very often accelerate to 90 mph to pass the trucks etc on the fast lane. Not sure how you would do it to keep the consistency to make it comparable model to model. But I think it would be useful. Perhaps do a from/to turn around in 1 hour, and see how much power the car need to accomplish that.

@FuncleChuck 2 года назад
Charging from 0% -10% and 90% to 100% always takes longer - it’s really not recommended to ever go into those ranges except when needed. They mention that at the very beginning of the video. Volvo advertises 10% to 80% in 37 minutes. It’s a 150kW DC system. Cost is the same as for any other EV so it’s not really worth mentioning in a review of a single car - but here’s the math: It’s a ~75kWh battery. So at 12 cents per kWh (an average at-home price) that’s about $9 for a full 0% to 100% charge, or 4 cents per mile of range. At a DC fast charge station it varies by location- but worst case is about 50 cents or ~$25 for 10% to 80% and 150 miles of charge at 17 cents per mile. It’s not usually that expensive. The cost is similar to $4/gal gas and 25 mpg, or $5 and 30 mpg - but you only need this on a road trip and you get the first 250 kWh (about 750 miles) free from Volvo.

@@rzu7120 Most EVs have slow top-end charging rates... Volvo just takes it a step more. The reality is that you will VERY rarely charge above 85% or let the car get below 15%... if you frequently need all the range an EV can offer then you don't want an EV... simple as that. At ~160 miles of actual 70MPH range the C40 charged to 85% would only cover about 70% of my normal driving days, but that 30% of the time I can do 300 miles in a day... and that's too much to ask from an EV at the moment consider... AND highway speeds around here are 85mph, backroad speed limits are 75MPH with traffic going 80MPH... so I would probably only have 120 miles of highway range in a C40 and would be nowhere near a DC fast charger 99% of the time. A PHEV with 100 miles of EV range would allow me to be electric only for about 25% of my work-days, however... my Volt gets me about half-way there on those days and it's fantastic.

It's a 60K car due to its level of refinement, build quality. Range isn't the only determinant of why a car cost more. Whether it is an EV or ICE, a more refined car and better built car costs more than a less refined one. I don't expect Lexus to have better range than Toyota EVs but I expect to pay more for a Lexus because it is more refined.

@@benjaminsmith2287I disagree. That's a matter of perception. I don't think it's a good value at $60K having driven in XC90 V90 and XC60 I'm quite familiar with these cars. 40 is a base range car and XC40 ICE is $47K base car. It's a competitive segment.
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 2 года назад
@@b6s4shelter It's not that I think it's a good price. I'm just saying is more than range that makes a car expensive. The way for Volvo to get better range is to make a more aerodynamic car and that's not coming in this segment until 2024. Volvo says they'll have a somewhat smaller, ground-up crossover, all-new EV in 2024. Hopefully, it'll have more competitive range. For now, it's hard for any car company to make a profit on EVs due to their cost to build so I understand why Volvo is charging what they charge for their EVs and the size of their market.

I rented the C40 and had nothing but terrible experiences with it. Could it of been my particular rental, maybe but I doubt it as it only had 8 miles when I rented it. 1.) The range was absolutely atrocious. I could never get 200 miles before it was already indicating 10% left. 2.) We all know Electrify America is terrible but this vehicle would never receive anything above 65 k/wh when charging. I couldn’t figure out why. I even used the Google charge map for the vehicle to precondition and it still didn’t work. Not sure if that was a vehicle issue or network issue. Either way, I really wanted to like this since I’ve only had positive experiences with Polestar. I absolutely love EV’s but it seems like only Tesla has truly got their crap right with an across the board satisfactory experience all the time, IMO. Next month, I’ll be purchasing my first EV and it’s safe to say that Tesla has taken the cake on this on. Model Y, here I come.

I love the styling of this car, but the Tesla Y is way better at almost the same price. No contest IMO.

Volvo C40 is a scam! My 2023 Volvo C40 has a steering wheel that vibrates very badly, making it quite annoying and UNSAFE to drive, and Volvo doesn’t want to fix it. Lemon Law

What a dumb service from your sponsor...? They drive in an ICE van to your EV to charge it from a battery or generator? This is okay for like AAA in emergency situations, but not for daily use I expect better from you guys..

You will do the same thing in a gas car if you are almost empty and still 50 miles from the nearest refueling. And with $5 gas there are more people now trying to extend their gas range as much as possible. I've driven gas cars slower so I don't arrive early. I'd rather do that then sit in a parking lot for 15 minutes. Did you ask those drivers why they were going slower than you think they should have?

Still very impractical. Grossly overpriced, too short a range, too long to charge. Waiting for a practical EV. Practical is 400 mile minimum, 10 min charge time empty to full, and price 20k or under.
