As a Swede, living not far from the HQ of Volvo Cars in Gothenburg, I have to say that this review was very fair, honest and informative. Tesla is better in some areas, Volvo in others, as it should be. Competition between brands hopefully gives the consumers better and better cars. Two thumbs up!
Thanks, I’m really glad you enjoyed it. The big thing between them is the charging network, I think this will be a deciding factor for a lot of people…video coming soon about it
Seems like a fair review. I just ordered a XC40 Recharge for delivery in April next year when my current 2021 Passat GTE lease ends. I went for the single motor extended range option as I had a budget to stick too. The 4wd would have been nice here in Sweden in the wintertime but I dont need the crazy acceleration. I did look at a Tesla Y LR but they are a bit too expensive and I dont really like the stripped out interiors., especially not having a speedo infront of the driver.
I run an XC40P6 so, an older model of the one you have ordered. It's a solid performer and a lovely motor. my lease ends in March 2025 and as we dont need a car as big as the XC40 we've been looking at the EX30. I'll be honest, I like the exterior but the inside, not so much. There is minimalism but then there is the EX30 minimalism. It's just too bare after driving cars that have instrument clusters, not having one is maybe a step too far? If it had a heads up display that would be an option but Volvo don't offer one. It means I'll be looking at other options as the EX30 has dropped down the list.
Refreshingly different from most car reviews. You referred to the upcoming EX40. Perhaps you meant the EX30, which will be Volvo's smallest EV. That will be a very important addition to Volvo's EV lineup, not just for the money it will bring in, but equally for the many new owners who will become hooked on Volvos.
Love the format of your review. Just bought a used 2023 C40 for $28K (USA). Love it: well sorted, comfy, sporty, excellent build & safety + no Elon. Everything works well together. Great daily driver.
Just an FYI, in the trunk, the grocery divider has a latch at the end that came out that wasn't locked, that's why the panel came out in his hands (8:40) but more importantly, that's why when it was placed in the notch it was wobbly. On our XC40, you can literally hang 30lb bags from the divider and use it to keep cat litter split from groceries. The divider also can fold on top of itself to make almost all of the trunk the full depth with the under-floor, the panel is quite heavy to be so strong.
Great, honest review. I have a 2023 MY but still very interested in other EVs. This is much more of a conventional vehicle as opposed to a Tesla. Volvo is definitely a brand I would consider when I come to replace the model Y. Again, a great review. Thanks from WA.
that was a really good review, and it was great to see a deep comparison to the Model Y - who to be fair, are leading the market with sales. I found the review very as comprehensive as necessary, balanced, and clearly you were not playing favorites. Great review, keep them coming. I have a GV60 performance and have never driving a model Y, so it would be really cool to see a good head to head comparison.
We have had a Model Y Performance and an XC40 for the last 2.5 years. I like the Tesla better; my wife likes the XC40 better. We are considering the EX30 when the lease runs up on the Volvo. The assessment was very good, and I agree with most everything. The range in the XC40 is our biggest issue, so all our road trips are done in the Tesla because of the range and the really poor state of CCS charging in the US.
There should be road tests coming out in the next ten days - Volvo hosted a testing get together in Spain. Am hoping to be able to buy an adapter for my XC40, but the new cars in North America will ship with NACS. In Europe, even Tesla uses CCS2.
Thank you very much for your review. Would be great to put the phone closer to you. Its very hard to hear you because of the background noise.. lovely review tho 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I appreciate it Edit: I noticed you already fixed it the next videos ❤️
Nice review/comparison, thank you! I was on the verge of going for a Model 3, but cannot find insurance at an affordable rate, in fact most insurer sources declined to insure for a Tesla. Being an ICE Volvo owner already I have found a preloved XC40 Recharge at an affordable price and hoping to do a deal on it soon. So, sub’d and thank you for confirming it is a decent option over a Tesla… 👍🏻
@@thercsev That was the last straw for me too Tesla Y insurance was crazy price way over double the Volvo. Had it 2 years now and love it. New upgraded XC40 MY24 they have just brought out is even better as they have put in some sensible motors. Shame they did not do that in the beginning. .
I'm down to the last few on my list for my next car and Volvo are still scoring strong. Peugeot is still there and I'm still trying to figure out exactly what VW are offering, especially as I live in Spain (Seat/Cupra). Tesla is popular but I'm afraid the Musk quotient is too high and has to be dismissed.
Excellent review- I just leased the C40 - but I probably should have bought it- I know that in 3 years at the end of my lease that there will be MANY new models and technology. But seriously- the C and CX40's are so complete- what more could I want? Yes longer range but for my needs 240 is fine- I have two gas cars for long trips and that wont change. But there is not a better Daily Driver EV out there. It has EVERYTHING I would ever want/need- I got the Ultimate trim version in the US and seriously I just love it. Its small but not too small so perfect for inner cities and on the highway. And you get a 4 year FREE Sim Card for the always on Android OS! Fantastic! Two dings- WTF on the AM radio thing? I do listen to AM a lot and while I can stream- why? Dont tell me it is radio interference either There are other EVs that have AM. And 2> While the seats are good they are not "Swedish Great" Not a deal breaker and Im fine with it- when I was at my Volvo dealer and sit on the thrones in their high end models- these pale in comparison. Again NOT a deal breaker- but the Swedes- dating back to my Saabs of old- have had AMAZING seats- these cuz I guess of the "sustainability" materials and padding are just Good. But its a sleeper among the bigger luxury brands and well worth the money IMO. I even like the HK sound system that is usually average- this system is way better than average. Again thank you for the review.
I had a Tesla model 3 for almost 4 years, left hand drive and had the same issue with window washing, all splashed the driver side window as well. I am now up to the hard task what car to chose next, I have a short list at the moment, BMW iX1, Volvo XC40, Ford Mustang Mach E, Skoda Enyaq iV. Any thoughts on this list? 😎 I don’t want a Model Y, would like to try something else.
It’s a really good list of vehicles similar to the model Y. It really depends what you need the car for, is it a short commuter, long distance grand tourer, family car, etc etc. I will say that I will be reviewing the Mustang and the Skoda in the coming weeks and I will let you know honest opinion
Also from NL...same boat as you. 4 years with model 3 and looking for something else to shortlist (alongwith highland model 3) for next car. As of now only EX30 seems like a good option. Renault Megane Etech was a good one, but too pricey for its size. But I have decided to go either with Tesla's UI or Android Automotive cars (like Volvo, Renault etc.). BMW has screwed up in several areas of their iDrive 8, it is not hands on wheel eyes on road anymore. If it has to be a BMW, I would rather wait until 2025 for neue klasse 3er. VW group's (ID4, Enyaq etc.) UI is the worst of all.
As someone with a Skoda company car (and Octavia, not an Enyaq) I would see if you can find info from people who have had one for a while. My octavia rattles so much, it’s not built great. Also the infotainment (which is very similar to the Enyaq version) has had so many glitches for the 2 years I’ve had it. I had an Enyaq as a courtesy car a few weeks back and it was spacious, comfy, nice to drive, but having used the Kona electric that my employer has the new Kona electric will be top of my list with the Volvos and Megane when I look to order an EV at the end of this year…
Also had the option to chose a new car. My final list was a BMW i4, Volvo XC40, Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen golf variant. Decided to go with the Volvo. It got an update this year with the option for longer range and was a bit cheaper so I could add more options which was nice. Drive feeling was about the same for all these cars.
It is a consideration, however, I’m leaning more towards destination chargers. I don’t do huge long journeys regularly enough that I need to DC fast charge, but when I’m away destination charging is becoming a factor for me
On the used market this is in line with a MYLR and MYP and better when you factor in mileage. I prefer the size and styling of the XC40 but am worried about how the limited volvo dealers would handle service and public charging. I've heard Volvo has worked out a deal with Tesla but haven't confirmed it. Also while Volvo design is better, Tesla software is leagues better than Volvo or most other manufacturers At the original price of 60k, I'd try to get an Ioniq 5N. Brand new goes to Tesla where you can get a MYLR for 40k and a MYP for 43k AFTER the EV tax credit. This is helping to drive down used prices so thanks Elon I guess.
"Glovebox with an actual handle, incredible." :D The XC40 Recharge has been the best EV I've driven. Great handling for an SUV, great as a daily driver with a good size trunk, tow hook, lots of hooks and stuff to hang bags on, physical buttons on the steering wheel, great nav system, good sound system, great interior all around. Hopefully Volvo won't fall into the touch/swipe function crap on the steering wheel and keeps as many physical and tactile buttons/switches as possible. Or maybe they end up with a system like Kia has in the EV6/Niro, they're actually usable. Such a shame about the availability and kinda high pricing for the front wheel drive model. The aerodynamics could be better too. But that's only a minor problem.
Good review, sound not great. It would be helpful to say what model you have driven. I drove an XC40 plus yesterday, and the sunroof and alloys were different 😊 8/10
Been using left hand drive model 3 and yes, the windshield washer fluid throws up on side windows so badly. But the working of the wipers too is not that great in detecting the drizzzling rain.
Other things to consider when buying a car is ease of exchange , how easy is it to trade in your old car , how good was the trade in price and how easy would it be to get something serious wrong with the car fixed . The traditional car makers have a well trusted system of trade in , it’s simple you just get a couple of valuations from you local dealers and pick the best one . Tesla really don’t do trade ins , they don’t have the second hand car lot space , so you either sell your own car or they get quotes from the second hand car dealers and take a cut . The big advantage of a Tesla is the Supercharger network, it would also be worth looking at the difference between the public charging network and Tesla’s supercharger network and see how this effects ownership especially as the public network gets better and more competitive. I love your approach to reviews , it’s seems honest and straightforward.
@Joe They fixed it here in Scandinavia. I mean it's still here, but it's used for the xtra battery capacity! Here we will have a RWD Extended range with 579 km (359miles) ❤💪🏼
@@Joe-lb8qn Well keep in mind that this is simply an XC40 with batteries and motors which isn't going to be around for long anyway so you can't expect much in that regard (hence the lack of frunk space/hard to access)
Where the hell is all the power going in the long range? Is it the same motor as the Performance but software is holding it back? 400bhp for xc40 vs over 500 for MYLR, more weight for xc40 yet their 0-60 times are the same?
If I was a Tesla owner, the main thing I would be peed about is how they are constantly dropping the price. They started by being the most profitable EV company out there, just because people were, for some weird reason, prepared to pay way over the odds to own one. Knowing that they were, effectively being ripped off. Now that they have some really serious competition, they are having to drop prices to compete and now only make a "normal" profit margin. If Musk was really doing this to help the planet, as he allegedly said, then surely he should have just sold them for a normal mark-up from day 1, rather than make a fortune just to waste it on Twitter. Lol
There’s a bit to do with competition and bit to do with interest rates. Mine is on a lease and I got it just before the dropped the price in Jan 23. Out of curiosity I checked the lease again and it was the same price due to higher interest. I agree that Elon does have some ‘interesting’ ideas on ways to business
Usyk won't cooperate. Everyone has plans, but when the other guy doesn't cooperate the real test starts. Daniel gas a chance, sounds fired up, but when he gets tired there's a realistic chance Usyk can run around him, even stop him. I hope Daniel does well and goives a good fight. But he is a long shot.
I feel like you missed the big differences between Tesla and the rest. How is the cars infotainment system, what do you get with the Google system Vs. Tesla. Charging speeds, kw range pr. Mile etc
The Google maps are better than any other kind of map including the Tesla one. If you have an Android phone, the infotainment system will be very familiar. Which one you like best overall is probably a matter of personal preference.
I have the XC40, and I love everything about it. No issues with the infotainment. The car is luxury, and it feels that way. Also feels bigger than it is.
The infotainment system is great, especially the EV version of Google maps as well as as all the Android apps. Can you specify your problem with it? The reviewer did mention it and thought it was good.
"I'm going to call it a draw" No Tesla driver will ever admit that a non-tesla product is Superior. Ever. But that's because every Tesla comes with a life-sized poster of Elon which has to be installed above their beds.
there is one problem with all recharge. transmission tunnel. it's fine if you need two seater, or your baby is less than four (?) yo? as soon as you want to carry a scooter inside, you will get it.
We are-reserved a polestar, then cancelled after a test drive. It felt very cramped, the centre console intruded into the driver and passenger footwells, rubbing on the knee. The windscreen and side windows seemed too narrow too, adding to the claustrophobic feel. Then there was the abysmal range and small boot. We ended buying a model 3. I can imagine the xc40 to feel even more claustrophobic. An interesting comparison review, but not for me. The Tesla is even more difficult to beat now with the model y, it ticks all the boxes and will likely be our next car unless something astoundingly better appears, which silent look likely anytime soon.
The XC40 ticked a lot of boxes, it is a slightly smaller car than the Tesla but did feel like it’s materials and build quality were a lot higher. But the Model Y is a hard one to beat
The build quality on the Tesla is pathetic, the car looks like it was designed by a software engineer and an accountant, it’s designed to be easy to manufacture ,the customer service is terrible, the trade in valuations are low , they don’t have enough service outlets if anything serious goes wrong with the car , like an intermittent electrical fault or a chassis fault or a Miriad of other things that can go wrong that can’t be fixed in your driveway. The Tesla Supercharger network is brilliant .
Why would you make that choice? Genuinely interested in the why. By EVERY objective measure except range, the Tesla is an inferior vehicle. Ride, comfort, quality of engineering, build quality, use factors, outright material quality - Tesla simply hasn't improved since each model came out. Theirlack of improvement on failure rate and build quality issues are simply inexcusable IMO. I'm genuinely confused and interested by anyone that would choose a Tesla over other options for every model.
Hi, I had Tesla LR for 6 months, whilst waiting for my XC40 recharge twin plus, this is my 5th Volvo. The Tesla is better in almost every way, bar boot size. The range is almost a third more, rapid charge, the tech is miles better, screen bigger, better resolution, the build quality on new Tesla is premium those views of sub standard builds are now out of date. The auto drive is better, the phone app has more features and works consistently, just way more toys and fun.. back seats better, no transmission tunnel.. and the Tesla is 6k cheaper.. FYI my Volvo is a company car I now have for 4 years, if I hadn’t had the Tesla I’d probably think it was great 😂😂. You did ask. 😂
@@iatsd As Richard says, range, tech, more room, cheaper, super charging etc, the Volvo may look better on the outside and built better on the inside but I guess it's all down to personal preferences, some people like blondes some like brunettes, etc. just writting my honest opinion, nothing more than that, it was not an endorsement of Tesla or to slag off Volvo. I have not been paid by Tesla for my comments and I have never driven a Tesla or Volvo but watched 100's of videos on ev's, but before I bought one I would certainly test drive a few to see if my opinion changed. I have at least 3 friends that have a Tesla and all love it. You seem more anti Tesla than anything else, again just my opinion based on what you have written, your thoughts are your own and I think everyone is entitiled to their opinion even if they disagree with me. apologies for any spelling or grammer mistakes.
While I understand that better materials are also better materials, but The only time Ive ever physically touched the top of the dash or the pillars is cos all the reviewers were doing it and it was the first time I go whats my car like :D
It’s called an accelerator pedal. Infinitely adjustable. The big advantage of a single setting in OPD is that it’s far easier to develop the muscle memory and you know what the car is going to do. If you need more deceleration, you use the other pedal, which uses regen until you need physical brakes. Oh, and those brakes are fully integrated, so if it gets slippery, the Anti-Lock kicks in. Love my Swedish car!
There’s just an option to turn regen on or off. It’s only heavy feeling in the first few drives, you quickly get used to it. I get in a Tesla and it feels unsafe because it takes so long to stop! It’s all about what you’re used to. 😊
@@thercsev They've had over a decade to sort it out. They haven't improved by any appreciable margin, so the "newcomers" excuse wore thin 5+ years ago. They simply don't care about build quality. It's the only reason that makes any sense.
Your living in the past.. Tesla has caught up and in some cases surpassed the main car companies. I'd probably say with the exception of Volvo. Although the technology and supercharging network are way superior than everyone else.
You really need to pull over and explore the interior or functions...the amount of time you are looking away from the direction of travel is way too much...consider your actions have on others.
@thercsev No idea what that emoji represents...but your video demonstrates the huge dangers offered by car manufacturers these days...my point was real...too much time spent gazing at screens fishing for Menus/Sub Menus...dials and muscle memory will keep us all safer.
I hate the ride of my Model Y, far too stiff. I love the design of the Volvo EX30 but it’s just a bit too small and spartan. The XC40 Recharge should be the car for me, but I think the infotainment system dated and the exterior styling too dull. If Volvo bring out an EX40, I’ll be all over it
100% agree, Tesla has a long way to go but they are still relatively new to the car market compared to some others. Take Volvo as an example, they are coming up to their 100th year
@@thercsev Given they are building at the old Toyota Numi plant and have QA engineers on staff that used to work for the majors, no, they have no excuse at this point. A year or two to sort out production & QA issues is all it takes most manufacturers. Why should Tesla still be bodging QA control on cars 15 years down the track? How long do they get the "newcomer" excuse to hide behind?! The next 25 years?! The various Chinese manufacturers (Nio, GWM, MG, etc) that are younger than Tesla turn out better quality product already. Tesla has zero excuse other than they are lazy and/or just don't care.
If you are sooo amazed, switch to “nice, great” Volvo. First 4 month I was visiting service at least once per month 😂 many, many electronics issues. I Think this isn’t over. It’s not all about nice materials in EV!!!
