the nineties galant was my absolute favorite. I loved the aggressive looking front, the tight, creased lines and ofcourse the line up of engines and drivetrain options. Yet another good video as usual, hoping for a quick resolve for your personal stuff, it's nice Jon pointed it out.
Here in Indonesia we call the 8th gen Gallant the Shark Gallant, and while we never got the VR4 version there's an entire industry of people offering VR4 conversion kits
One reason why the Galant didn't sell well in the 2000's is that Mitsubishi didn't bother to update it. The last generation lasted between 2004 and 2012 with almost no changes. In the same period the Camry was completely redesigned twice, first for the 2007 model year, and again for the 2012 model year.
I owned a 1997 galant vr4 and to me it could pass as a rally/luxury car. The v6 twin turbo awd with 5spd tiptronic was no joke. The guage cluster was futuristic for its time, ice cold ac and a very spacious interior.
My 2001 was one of the best cars I ever had. It wasn't anything special but very reliable. I sold it to a coworker who then sold it years later to a family member. The car lasted 275k miles before they ran it hot and blew the engine. Other than that it only had a couple minor issues.
I drove a 2002 Galant until 2017, 1 blower motor replaced under warranty, and regular maintenance was all that was needed. The paint was bad, I nick named it the mange mobile. It caught fire @289K miles and ended its career. Looked bad, but mechanically it was a great car. (2.4L 4 cylinder)
@@jnr1989 yes, fire started around the fuse box under the hood. My son and I were going to get a hair cut and lunch. I parked the car, we checked in for hair, and had lunch two doors down. during lunch we heard this wailing noise. My son looked up and said, Dad, the car is smoking. Soon Flames were coming out under the hood and fender well.
@@lamarbevil4891 oh crap. I have always heard that the highest chance for a fire in a car would be electric related, then followed by gasoline (fuel lines, etc). Sorry to hear that, you were having a good time with your son
@@jnr1989 God was guiding me that day, I was debating whether to re-fill the gas tank before or after the hair cut.... Decided to wait and refill later. God protects. The fire never made it past the fire wall, but the engine compartment was ruined by putting out the fire from the fire department. The radiator was literally melted/blasted across the front of the engine by the fire hose.
Put 192k miles on an 01 Galant ES before moving on. Did not take good care of it (bought as a broke like 18 year old), all four fenders had been hit and run, 3 of the 4 hubcaps fell off, the a/c stopped working eventually, but it refused to die. Probably the most reliable car I have had. Never once left me stranded.
Thank you for these videos. As someone who was too young to pay attention to cars until the very end of the 2000s I appreciate getting to learn about the normal cars from this era.
The 9th gen was sold in Australia as a Mitsubishi 380 , and a couple of the Galant/diamonte you showed were sold as Mitsubishi magna or sigma in Australia....👍👍 Great video 👍
@@Tool0GT92 Mitsubishi cars from the 80s were tough as old boots and the cars in the 90s had so much sporting appeal. Don’t know what happened to them in the 2000s.
Not sure why people seem to be so loyal to the brand. Mitsubishi NEVER achieved the reliability brand-wide that other makes were known for. If they had, things would have worked out differently and they would have at least replaced Nissan in the Japanese Big Three by now.
@@iFixJunk I wasn't alive in the 20th century but I never hear anybody say anything about Mitsubishi. Even talking about old days. They obviously never had much of a chance to begin with with their strategy
The eighth gen Galant VR4/Sport is one of the coolest looking cars ever. And the one I had was probably my favourite car despite having more powerful, expensive and newer ones since.
I owned one until somebody slammed into it at the airport parking lot. Hit and run. Still have the dash plaque, key chain , and black leather owners manual wallet.. Also had a Galant GSX, but rust took that one out.
i enjoyed watching this new episode you have (especially considering it’s focused on a car company that’s currently far from what it once was in the 90s-mid 2010s. i also hope you go through the stuff you have outside of youtube, especially considering you’re one of my favorite youtubers to watch
Still driving my old 99 Galant 2.5 V6, overall great mechanical reliability but the rust issues keep on coming on the doors and undercarriage. Yet the driving experience is on par or even better than the most modern vehicles these days.
I owned a 1991 Galant here in the UK. ICD been spoilt by a Citroen Xantia ( very comfortable, great handling cars ) before and found the Galant to be dull and no fun in the corners at all, trading it in for a Saab. On hindsight, it was utterly reliable, well built and a nice looking car. I went on to own a dozen Saabs, but I wish I'd kept the Galant a while longer than did. Great episode👍
Had a 7th gen and it was great. Power everything burgundy leather interior with matching burgundy paint color. Such a beautiful car very comfortable and great MPG. Unfortunately don't see them around nowadays in 2022 😩
i still see them occasionally. you have to go where there isnt any rust. these things were commuter cars, people didnt store them in the winter, they drove them.
I really wish I was born earlier. The 90s had the best jdm sports cars. I've personally always been a big fan especially of Mitsubishi's performance cars from that era. A manual imported 8th gen galant vr4 would be so cool to have. Hopefully I can get my hands on one before they become ridiculously priced or impossible to maintain due to part availability.
Mixed emotions on this one. Seeing up to the 9th gen Galant makes me happy, but that reminder at the end about my former favorite car brand makes me sad. Thank you for helping to preserve the once great (in my opinion) car brand known as Mitsubishi. Certainly got a few Galants in my dream garage.
Love your videos! I actually own one of the last 7th gen Galants (1996) in The Netherlands (search for PN-PL-97 for pics). Took me two years to find but what a car! Utterly reliable, great handling... Thank you very much for this episode!
I had a Kalapana Black 1996 USDM Galant ES Premium (which had a few extra little features like the VR4 4 spoke alloys and glass fog lights) for a few years about 15 years ago. I loved it. It was slow and had some issues, but it was a great looking car. I just saw a silver ES that looked pristine in traffic here in PA a week ago. First one I've seen in years.
I had a 2002 8G Galant here in the UK with a naturally aspirated 4G63. Such a superb car with a gorgeous design - I still think about it a lot. I wish more had survived here but rust has eaten many. There are lots of Galant and Legnum VR4s imported from Japan and I think I may end up buying one of those some day.
I can confirm the 2009 (or maybe 10) galant was a rental car option. I rented one what ended up being 5 months at the end. I loved it too. For its size, I thought it was the best option available on the whole market
I loved the 90s and 00s galant and I had a family member who had an 04 galant from new and just had replaced it last year with 200k miles for a Kia Optima and they never had major issues with the car except for ac compressors Being bad
I owned a 2011 Galant from December 2014 to July 2021 and all it had done to it was some exterior damage repairs and brake pads and rotors replaced on all four wheels. It was a very very dependable car.
I drove the 6th gen galant then later a friend had the awd version I thought wow Mitsubishi is cool then I watched your episode man rally style galants ! The best channel ever ! I get so excited when I see new episodes THANK YOU SO MUCH WE LOVE IT
In Australia they were known as the Mitsubishi Magna. They sold well and lasted a long time. It's a shame what Mitsubishi are now as they were a great car maker. I owned 2 Lancers and they were so reliable and economical and fun to drive.
except kia/hyundai are still terrible quality. they look nice, thats why they sell. ive owned 5 mitsubishi cars since 2004. not counting the 2 my wife has had in that time. some new, some used. all have been extremely reliable cars that have given me no reason to look at a different brand. the unfortunate part is, there's nothing in their current lineup im even remotely interested in. but having pulled out of Europe, i dont think they have any plans of leaving north america. europe has nissan and renault, north america has nissan and mitsubishi. im expecting to see a few new models in the next few years on shared platforms. like the new outlander.
i had 2 2009 galant ralliarts. they had enough power to surprise most people, even with the weight. they would also get 28 mpg on the highway. sometimes when i was really trying i'd get up to 31 mpg on my way home from work trying to get to the gas station by my house. but i wouldnt say it replaced the vr4. it was a n/a v6 with 258 hp, front wheel drive. they were great cars. but definitely didnt have rally in mind.
Galants were sold in the UK from 1978 to around 2002. I liked the post 1988 models, thought they were one of the nicest styled Japanese saloons (sedans!) available. Unfortunately they were not big sellers as the dealer network was lacking and spare parts prices were high.
I thought of it as a performance/luxury car. I even remember a happy dream I once had, when I was 19, that I woke up and my 1989 Grand Am had been replaced mysteriously with a 90s Galant. I didn't spend my time admiring/thinking about Galants, but somehow it slotted into my dream as an awesome upgrade.
I have a soft spot for Mitsubishi…I learned to drive in an old woody doge colt wagon, and now I drive a Sebring coupe, basically a rebadged 3rd gen Eclipse. I would totally get an old Galant…pretty neat cars.
Great vid as always. One small correction: The Plymouth Cricket was an imported Hillman Avenger from England thanks in part to Chrysler’s ownership of the Rootes group. I get that they look alike at least! 😂
My first car (in Australia) was a 1990 Mitsubishi Magna station wagon, which was a wide body version of the 1983 Galant built locally in Adelaide. Mitsubishi also tried selling the final version of the Galant in Australia as the 380 but it was a complete flop and caused them to permanently close their Australian manufacturing plant.
Had a 2000 ES with the 6G72 V6 in high school. Learned to do basic maintenance on it, drove it to Florida and back, and learned performance driving in it. Wasn't the best car, but it survived 17 year old me without much trouble.
A cousin had a 1995 Galant 4-cylinder, and although it wasn’t an exciting trim level I remember it being remarkably fun to drive and surprisingly peppy for what it was. The 8th-gen was a favorite of mine too. I used to confuse it with BMWs of the time in traffic, and I still think it was just a good handsome car. I miss the Galant being an option in that segment, just like I’ll miss the Passat being an option.
Mitsubishi owned a rental car company called Value rental Car. I worked for this company in the mid-90s and we did have The full Mitsubishi line in our rental fleet. It was sold in 1997 to Alamo rent A Car in which it was then shut down.
I had a rental car that was a Galant in 2013, so it would have been the 2012 model. Base 4-cylinder engine, but it wasn't terribly slow, and the car had decent handling so it was a bit more fun than the typical rental. Comfortable too, and the A/C worked great which is good since I was in southern California in the summer.
I had a 2005 galant with the 3.8 engine ,drove it for 10 years loved it . and then a person ran a stop sign and that was the sad end of a great car miss it
Though Mitsubishi did make a Cricket variant of the Colt starting in 1974, the Plymouth Cricket you show in your video is the original, based on the UK-built Hillman Avenger, produced and imported from 1971-73. Notable to being eaten alive by rust due to poor rustproofing and liberal use of salt on roads in the winter, hence the switch to the Mitsubishi variant. Great video as always though!
I seem to recall in 2012 seeing a Galant on the Enterprise lot at the Denver airport, and I wanna say I once saw online a rental car company list “Mitsubishi Galant or similar” for a standard car.
As time went on, despite some neat earlier versions like the GTS 3.8 and Ralliart, the 9th gen Galant became basically a ready-made rental car during its run. I drove tons working at Avis, and I thought they were refreshingly basic and honest cars, but absolutely not what most buyers were looking for by 2012.
You had a picture of a Plymouth Cricket that was actually a rebadged Hillman Avenger. Chrysler bought the Rootes group. Later on it was badged as a Chrysler and then a Talbot when Peugeot bought out Chrysler in Europe.
The Galant was also sold as the Plymouth Cricket, but the one you show here is actually a British Hillman Avenger, which was also sold under that name (before the Galant became Cricket).
I have always wanted a Galant, I just never got around to it and it's shame they discontinued such a great vehicle. You should do one on the Conquest from Chrysler.
Loved 90s early 00 Mitsubishi! The Galant g8 is my favourite car, best looking family car still, the lancer 07-15 also looks awesome, shame they didnt continue making saloons and wagons and only make suvs
