In unique circumstances, cars do rust in the desert. I read a story of a car sitting the desert for years. A person wanted the doors off of the car for the restoration of another car like it. However, the doors were rusted out. What had happened is that during dust storms, dust settled in the doors, eventually filling them with dirt. Then, when it did rain, the dirt would get wet and stay wet a long time, rusting the door out.

Funny enough, I have 2 similar cars. A 2012 Seat Leon with a 1.4 TSI and a manual gearbox and a 2009 Lexus RX450h I bought the Seat new and now it has 90000 miles So far I had to replace the brake booster, Intake heat exchanger (it was leaking coolant into the intake), fix the turbo wastegate (extended the rod from the actuator by 1/3 inch), and serpantine belt tentioner and rollers (maintenance item) The Seat is made in Spain, and yes it is less reliable then I'd hoped, it isn't a nightmare like I feared. I bought the lexus last year from its original owner (he bought it new) with 140000 miles There, I replaced the water pump (preventative maintenance), both rear shocks, front suspension bushings (I consider those wear items too)

A couple of years ago, my uncle owned a skoda Laura (He has a superb now along with other cars). On his way to work, he hit a pothole and that was the end of the front suspension. The tire that hit the pothole got swollen somehow and he had to drive that thing to work. It was one of the deadliest things he has done. In India these VW group cars are considered one of the safest. They may be in crash tests but they're not when it comes to stuff like this. Unfortunately, there aren't many Toyota models here in India. However we do have Maruti Suzuki, which is basically the Toyota here. Their cars are stupidly reliable. The maintenance cost of a Suzuki swift for 5 years is under like 300 bucks. Insane.

In WWII, the German panzer and tiger tanks were superior to the American Sherman tank but because they were more complex, the German tanks took longer to build and they broke down far more often. America was able to build 100 tanks to every one German tank. Ditto for our Jeep versus the German VW Kubelwagen. That is how we rolled over the Germans and ended the war in less than one year after D Day. Today, the German cars are also more complicated and more prone to failures than the Japanese cars. So you pay far more and get more problems.

I'm reading up on Toyota and Lean Manufacturing, and they created a game changer that has left the rest of the world racing to try to figure out how to even catch up. Create a process that produces a high quality product that you can sell for cheaper than the competition while making more profit per unit? I think the learner has become the master and won capitalism.

What's your view of the door lock modules breaking on certain cars even after 3 years? My friend's 2005 Honda Civic needed new door locks after 7 years because doors wouldn't open or lock at times. My 2014 Jetta and apparently a lot of Audis too have this door lock actuator failure after people have had their freaking cars for only a few years. You'd think there would be a lawsuit against car makers for this type of thing breaking so early on.

@@ekulenwaiku4654 You don't need to own a German car to know this. There is actual data on this on Consumer Reports. You can look it up online. German cars are over-engineered pieces of junk often. Are all of them junk? No, some of them can last you 150k+ miles. But for the most part, they break. A lot. And when you fix them, it's stupidly expensive. Go lookup the cost to repair a GTI dual clutch transmission. If you're rich, Mercs and BMW's are great cars. But if you're living somewhat paycheck to paycheck, I wouldn't touch a german car with a 10 foot pole
