A friend has a MVMT watch (and still wears it). When he showed it to me, I saw something flying around in the watch and I got confused for a second - until he held his wrist still for a moment and I realized IT WAS THE HOUR MARKERS! Several (at least 4 or 5) of them had fallen off and he was like "Oh yeah, it's been like that for a few months now. They must have fallen off when I accidentally knocked the watch against the table or something". I swear I am not a watch snob but I haven't brought the topic up with him ever again.

God yes, I totally agree. Misaligned screws on a watch that expensive would drive me nuts. I've just seen a Tsar Bomba watch (never heard of the brand before) on Amazon for £189, it's a kind of ripoff/homage to the Hublot case design/shape, and it has all the screws aligned. If they can do it for under £200, why can't Hublot on a watch for £10k plus?

The "hate" of MVMT comes from their representing themselves as something they are not, and attempting to overcharge as a result. There is nothing wrong with a cheap disposable watch if it is priced as a cheap disposable watch.

From the name, the logo and the advertising, they're clearly a brand/marketing lead company who are doing exactly what you say. Using marketing and influencers and the California vibe to trick people into thinking it's cool to own a MVMT, but brand recognition and marketing is why people love the mediocre stuff that Disney make and why people buy iPhones, so you can't really criticise them for that.

Hey Watchfinder, something that should be noted about these MVMT watches (and what makes them such a ripoff) is that while their ads look sleek and nice, the watches fall apart in the details and you REALLY start to notice all the deficiencies when you get one in person. Sizing completely off from the style of the watch, super flat details, quartz modules that are obviously way too small for the case size, awful QC issues, subpar straps and bracelets, and so on. If these watches were $50 or less that'd be fine. But paying $150 and up on these? An absolute rip-off.

There are sub-150€/$ proper brand Swiss-made watches available, so paying $150 for MVMTs is ridiculous. I've bought excellent Wenger watches for my nieces and nephews which I've got on discount for even under €100 and list price under €150 (same in dollars). Wenger are reliable Swiss-made watches from the Victorinox-owned original Swiss army knife brand, made with really good quality control, worldwide 3 year warranty, service centres worldwide. You can even get automatic models from them for under $500. Casios and Seikos can be had for well under €100. I see no point in buying those Ali Baba Chinese fake marketing company watches...they're not good quality and on top of that they're not cheap! I used to work at an AD of MVMT. I handled scores of them. Mostly while cleaning the display, because otherwise there was no reason to. While Daniel Wellington is way more badly made, MVMT "quality" don't fall far behind. I'd say one's better off just buying the cheapest watch at a petrol station store. Or at a Tesco. While Hublot and MVMT are light years apart in quality, they're just monuments to bad taste in their respective tiers.

I appreciate Hublot for doing something different. The watch industry isn't exactly big on trying new things and while Hublot is overpriced, at least they aren't releasing the same dive watch over and over again like most other brands do. Yep. They just have a bit more clever marketing. Infuriates me when I see people wearing Daniel Wellingtons, because it's just a complete waste of money. For the price of 1 (one) Daniel Wellington watch you can buy: Anywhere between 6 and 10 Casios in various styles to suit all purposes and fashions, or Maybe 2 Orient watches, with in house automatic calibres and sapphire crystals. Thinking maybe a Kamasu and a Bambino, or 1 relatively high quality Swiss quartz watch such as the OG Tissot PRX.
@smashexentertainment676
@smashexentertainment676 2 года назад
Nearly all fashion and instagram watches are outsourced blanks from China 3-15 bucks a piece with zero original design. They just slap their brand on a dial and sell it for 1000%+. Most of fashion brands even buy same blanks with little to no modifications. If you look at aliexpress, you can often find exact copies with Chinese brand on a dial. And quality control ends at Chinese factory where they make 100 if not 1000 watches a day and take market by quantity, not quality. You can probably ask to replace your broken fashion watch 10 times for free and still be ripped off. At this point you'll be technically paying much less for a Rolex on a grey market. Kinda legal scam if you ask me.

Fossil watches were also my first introduction into the world of watch collecting. They are great watches for the price. Internally they are generally very simple and low cost which isn't a bad thing since they still get the job done. For lack of a better comparison they are like the AK-47 of watches. Simple reliable mechanism, low cost materials, easy to produce in high quantities, minimal maintenance required, and used by people all over the world. It wouldn't make sense for even the most die hard gun collector to say that an AK is a "bad" gun just like Fossil watches are not "bad" watches. They're simply accessible and reliable tools. But because of this they aren't investments and don't cater to those who want high quality precision components. There's no rarity to them or high level craftsmanship required in their production. Just the other day I almost purchased an unused mint condition Fossil watch from the 90's that I had as a kid and it sold for a whopping $40+shipping. It had the original box, all the papers, protective plastic still on it, and still sold for less than it did 30 years ago. In hind sight whoever was selling that watch got absolutely nothing out of storing it and protecting it all those years. So it really depends on why you are buying a particular watch and what you hope to get out of owning it. Hope this helps.

If you want a tough watch that will last, one that you're going to wear, Fossil is the watch to get, in my opinion. They're cheap, and from my experience really stand up to abuse well. I've owned many Fossils, and my first one I got 10 years ago still runs today and is in my collection. I've done cement work, fallen on the pavement skateboarding, and many other things while wearing that watch, and it still runs great with a minor scratch (can't even see it unless you look for it) on the crystal. Point is, for the price, you'll be hard pressed to find such a sturdy watch, Sure, the design isn't as flashy or clean as other watches, but I'd rather have a sturdy watch than a flashy one. Not to say they don't look good, they do. Also, I just recently got a fossil mechanical watch, that's a skeleton design, and I'm in love with it. It's been running great, and just looks great. Not as accurate as a luxury chronometer, or a quartz, but that's what a cheap mechanical watch is going to get you.

The £13k hublot watches movement is only worth £150 this definately corresponds to what archieluxury said about rolex and of other swiss watches only costing around £1000 to make.

Probably worth the price they paid for the name recognition and marketing that has brought in thousands of young twenty somethings who probably weren't into watches before MVMT's marketing intrigued them and sold them in wearing a watch. Worth the brand loyalty of young up and comers instead of older 'well I made it' customers. Always good to think about the future. They can always improve the quality, manufacturing and pricing issues.

Other brands should seek to educate and invite in non-watch enthusiasts so they would understand pricing and details and high quality instead of just sticking up their noses at people who buy those brands.

I own an invicta pro diver and it's still one of my favourite watches, i don't love the brand or that they make so many "homages". But for 90 euros it's a good watch to begin your collection with, its waterproof, has a pretty accurate movement, and wears nicely. This isn't a sales pitch and if you can I'd highly suggest buying a watch that has an original design, but if you're on a budget and want a diver, it's an option worth considering

Just as a bit on nit-picky aside, carbon fibre is specifically the woven stuff that was compared to a picnic basket (in my opinion, it can be done well, it just tends to look a bit tacky in the way it tends to be used), the stuff that you liked is called forged carbon, which is made in a different way. Not trying to be obnoxious, just trying to inform, if anyone is interested in these materials like I am

If I see a lot of misspellings this leaves me an impression that they are not detailed oriented and lack quality. I am a very picky consumer and if I see these type of things I no longer trust the brand. Company culture is very important and when I see lack of attention to details then usually this means there are corners that are being cut which impacts quality!
@skzion2

... which is especially relevant for watches, which by their nature are all about details (like the mastery of detail that is required for accurate measurement of time).

The Invicta boutique in Times Square, which you show in a photo, *always* has an offer like "buy two get one free" on the video display sign above the door. Inside they try to look all cool and suave, but even before walking in one thinks "if they're that good, why are they offering that deal?" And yes, other than the blatant ripoff designs they seem to try to focus on big, chunky, gaudy watches for the set of people who want a big, chunky, gaudy watch. (My ex boss really wanted one of those. Fortunately the one he was wearing to work was on the smaller end of big and not particularly chunky and not very gaudy and I liked it and that got me into watches. It inspired me to buy one that was less chunky and less gaudy. It is big though.)

Weird, I got into buying “respectable” brands after buying a couple fake Hublot’s. Bloody comfortable, they look accurate, had an ETA that kept the time just fine… I thought it looked and felt awesome. Unfortunately, the bug then hit me. Now I can’t really wear it… mainly knowing those are fake, and the Hublot hate hasn’t helped.

Funny thing.. The guys mentioning Diesel watches reminded me that I was a huge fan.. I wore them from when I was about 15 to about 25 (2 or 3 models). And I remember thinking how boring Rolex Submariner looks compared to my Diesel watch... Oh tempora, o mores.. Not that I'm a huge watch geek now, or at least a collectioner, given my meager income... Well, my SKX007 still ticks away and looking good as the day I bought it.
