I just came across your channel and it was meant for me to see this! I just shared with another viewer that I’m 62yrs old and I just started to learn the bass this past August and after signing up for an online course I really began to believe that I was too old because it seems like I just can’t get it or I’m not fretting right, but after hearing you, I’m determined to learn my bass and I will be playing songs by January!!!

@@ForBassPlayersOnly Thanks for your reply! I really appreciate it! I have a question though. I’m learning on a P-bass and I’ve been thinking maybe I should’ve gotten a J-bass because the neck is smaller and that could help me learn fretting more easier. What’s your thoughts?

Bought a bass in my mid 30s but really didn’t play it very much . Then at 50, I joined a 3 piece band who needed a bass player . That forced me to start learning songs and practicing . It was fun, but I really didn’t get good until I learned some music theory and truly understood what I was doing and how to best support the song. I have never had any music education but I can now call myself a bass player . I’m in my 60 s and every time I pick up the bass I learn something new and it brings a smile to my face . If you are passionate you can learn something new at any age . Cheers!!

I started playing at 61 because a worship team wanted musicians and I said I'd play bass. I didn't even have a bass, let alone could play. I had just enough music knowledge to begin and went on a crash course journey. I started playing in the worship team immediately and two years later it's going really well.

Thanks for your story @geoffstokes! I’m 62 and I just started online courses for playing the bass this past August. I thought I was too old to play too, but I’m determined to finish what I started. I have a ways to go before I’m playing any real music but I’m determined to be playing songs by January!

Another great video. Sounded like an invitation to leave a story. Here's origin story: In 2009, already in my fifties, I decided to go back to college and get a degree. I had no idea in what. Story of my life. Then one day in, don't remember exactly, 2010 or 2011, I was walking home from some errand. For whatever reason I decided to stop by a music store. This store was owned by an acquaintance. I had known this person for years. He was a professional drummer and sold me a Pearl Export Series drum kit years before. That's another story. I walked in to the store mostly to say hi. Well anyway, long story short, I spotted a bass on the wall. A bass on consignment for a whopping $99. I bought it, along with all the usual stuff you need. Not knowing diddley about bass or any guitar for that matter. My next trip was to a local library where I found Bass Guitar for Dummies. I haven't turned away since. My foundation is blues, rock, country and jazz.

Another random thought on todays video. There are always a myriad of reasons we come up with to convince ourselves why we can't do something. All of them boil down to two things in my opinion. We don't really want to or we are afraid we can't. However there is the one single reason we can do something. We want to.

I'm glad you posted this. I missed the boat, then managed to get back on the boat only to dive back into the water , swim to shore, get out and look at the boat sailing off and say damn it, I missed the boat! I have since bought another ticket and are happily on the boat and don't plan on getting off anytime soon Great show ❤

I need pointers on navigating the frets blind
@ForBassPlayersOnly
@ForBassPlayersOnly Месяц назад
One thing I always suggest is getting used to what it feels like moving up or down one fret, two frets, three frets, etc., using your fingers as an anchor. Start by playing a note with your index finger, up and down. Get used to that feeling. Then do the same thing with your pinky. Do this without looking at your hands. Soon you’ll get more of a feeling for where you are and what notes are available to you. Give it a try then hit me back and let me know how it’s going. Thanks, Mr. Biggles! 😁

Jon, Thanks for this encouraging video. I'm 75, three years ago I had a stroke, which effected my dominant hand, my left. since then I've been trying to learn bass right handed. I have a hard time keeping a groove going. I know the fretboard & my roots, fifths & octaves. But I still haven't found a way to play that feels comfortable and natural. Any suggestions?

First, I’ve got to say how much I admire your determination and enthusiasm! My best recommendation is just to experiment and see what works. Put the emphasis on the music rather than trying to follow a specific technique. Feel free to send me a video and I’ll be happy to give you some feedback. I can be reached through the “Contact” link at forbassplayersonly.com/. Thanks for asking!

Dude, the reason why your channel is tanking is because of your artificial, over-exaggerated persona. It comes across as fake and unlikable. Fix this and be more natural.
