What got me into hifi was watching a midnight session of Jimi Hendrix in a cinema. The panning phased drums in Bold as Love sounded so great, I had to bring that sound home. This new range of speakers are the first I've seen that I think will get closest to that sound. Thanks
Just look how pumped you are Danny. They may not be line source but you seem to be so animated. Looks like these old school speakers have your juices going. Great to see. :) Cheers from OZ.
The best part of high sensitivity speakers is dynamics, the crack of a snare drum, quiet passages that get loud quickly are where high sensitivity speakers shine. Great for rock and roll or orchestral music.
@@MrBonger88Yeah, pair that with a tube based preamp, as that’s what a lot of First Watt amps have great synergy with, and you’d have a great system using multiple sources if you wanted. 👍🔊😊🎶
Yes but it looks like a stamped steel basket..thats going to resonant all over the place ..cast baskets are the way to go, cost more but worth every penny.
@@MuscleBN It's the same subwoofer they've used for years in their servo sub applications, and it's a cast basket. I have one myself, which I'm actually running in my car.
Thanks for the quick follow-up with this! BTW, we redid some SVS Ultra Prime Towers with your components, and like WOW. No more noise, great clarity and it allows us to use a lot more power cleanly of a 300B based 5 watt SET amp that sound deeply wonderful, where it was power and clarity limited before. Thanks!
Wow. Those measurements! You’d almost assume that’s purely simulated not actual measurements! …. And that impedance .. could drive those directly from a 80’s Walkman! Speakers are furniture that play music so WAF is critical .. I’d like to see one properly finished and with grilles.
Wow thanks a lot for the update on the bully. Can't wait to see it finished also the crossover you going to make for you. Can't wait to hear it sound because it would be one speaker I'd be really looking forward to buy. Can't wait to see finish take care and I love those speakers from Gennaro in Puerto Rico✌️
I always get worked up and excited by the many GR-R product offerings, as each category has unique attributes. The open baffle offerings may be the closest to my audio heading, with Maggies in one system for the past 10 years. I get what Danny is talking about speakers that are fun to listen to... the "old school" 12" 3-way, would not be one to worry about heating voice coils, over extended power listening sessions (while testing high power / amplifier designs) even on a robust 8" 2-ways. My next sizable speaker investment .will. be a GR-R product. I am thinking H frame dual servo sub(s) would love to do push pull configuration. Saving my dollars... **KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK DANNY!!
Interesting design - integrating an MTM "monitor" into a powered sub enclosure - and providing a stand/tower for the speaker - makes a *lot* of sense. You get the bass source integrated into the same footprint, for good phase alignment.
This is top project that delivers without limitations of signal compression that most commercial speakers face....since very few have an efficiency over 90 db ...the recent top JBL monitors aswel ,they lack the 94db /1w ....which makes a huge difference in real dynamics
This is beautiful news! I bought some Cerwin Vega RE38's & RE30's back in 98 when i was a teenager. Even though they're not great quality speakers I've always loved them because they're so much fun and i still use them on a 2nd system in our house. In about 2 years we 'll be moving to the Philippines and these would be perfect to bring over there and assemble.
I was so glad to hear you say that you're going to offer this juicy, juicy speaker as a complete assembled unit. If it is what you say it is you'll have a home run.
Great to see. and great to see how excited you are with it. Can't wait to see the in room test results / listening session update like u did with the Brute. Congrats on the new Family member
Measurements are taken at 1 meter and each vertical change is done by moving up 4". Since the acoustic centers are so close together and the crossover to the tweeter is so low, the vertical off axis response looks great.
Would love to be able to build the entire speaker. Maybe offer as a R/L/C flat-pack with drivers, x-overs, and terminals? Labor is often a major part of the cost so... just a thought. ;)
What's next? The Beast ! Massive 3 box speaker 1-20hz to 80-100hz 2-80-100hz to 700hz-1000hz 3 -700-1000 hz-to 2500-3000hz 4- and up !.All in different boxes that fit into themselves...
@craigellsworth3952 Diffraction, edge diffraction and baffle step are important issues, that need to be considered for cabinet and speaker baffle design. While some aspects of diffraction are more important than others, it is good to know them and act accordingly, depending on your project. Take a look at the white paper from kef on there Reference or blade speakers lots of time and research went into that design. Pretty cool stuff. Plus a narrow speaker looks awesome in my opinion and disapears Into the room easier.
@@idray986Love a narrow speaker, but a speaker like you describe with this servo woofer would be congested. Because the space behind the woofer will be to shallow. It need some volume behind the woofer. Not not only around it. Bass sounds better that way.
@idray986 Thanx for the news flash. Not that I am unaware of anything you brought up. Have another look at the horizontal measurements. Damn good, don't ya think. For what you described a set of Golden Ear References or PS Audio FR30s would save a lot of effort and possible disappointment.
@@craigellsworth3952 I currently own the Kef reference 5 non metas. I'm Judy just an industrial designer that likes to make stuff too. And you know, also have something the wife likes as well, so a narrow front baffle is desirable in the house. Im sure Danny could pull it off even it a meant a little low end sacrifice
PS Audio is having trouble with their floor standing speaker via their inclusion of internal subwoofers. In fact, they had to add a subwoofer in the listening room because they lost the lower octave due to in-room response cancellation. How is the phase relationship down in the lower levels handled in this speaker?
The servo amp has its own phase control so you can dial to your room as needed. The low end can do anything you want it to do. I have a stereo pair of triple 12" servo with my nx otica and the flexibility of bass is hugeeeseee
@@ClassifiedBrief Yeah, but those triple 12" servo-subs are probably set up in the room where they are best suited to room effect and not directly under the main speakers. There is only so much you can do with controls. Setting up a pair of speakers for stereo imaging has its own set of tweaks and adjustments. The ultimate position, for the mains, however, may not be so for low bass.
The use of the phase control that is right on the amp isn't about the room response. It is about dialing in the correct time arrival to the MTM section right above it. The EQ system built into the amp will help with the room response. The level control and extension filters can be used to dial in the room response as well.
I made it all the way to 2:00 without having a Question for the expert. Why, if you made two boxes for the woofer and mid/high, do you slap them together into one? Is this your definition of "Old School?" Do all of these speakers perform better if seperated? I am a RTTI and MECP educated fan who has enjoyed your customization of commercially available products. Thank you.
That was the old school way. Also, when separating the MTM in it's own cabinet then there is a baffle step loss to compensate for that in this case will knock about 4db of output from them. So this does increase sensitivity, and dynamics.
These old school box speakers are selling like hot cakes these days, the Wharfedale Linton and Dovedale, Mission 770, JBL L82 and L100 Classic. Might as well jump in and compete and give even more performance where possible.
@@dannyrichie9743I prefer a thin design in terms of asthetics. Neither my room nor my ears are good enough for the sound quality to matter too much. I just think the old school speakers look ugly. Not a criticism of your designs Danny. It's just my personal preference. The first time I saw a set of tall slim floor standing speakers was early 80s, and I just though WOW.
Is covering the inside cover of a component with insulating film a good thing? I have already read that covering the inside cover of an audio component with insulating film could improve the sound. Is that the case? Is this recommended?
Inside cover of a component? Are you referring to electronics? Electronics do no need insulation. However, damping out a chassis can provide positive results.
I mean covering the cover with insulating film, the part that you unscrew to see the components, the LID. 1. Is it good? 2. Would there be a heat dissipation problem in the case of a DAC (Denafrips Ares 2 for example)?@@dannyrichie9743
@@pinkyfloydyfan1 No, it does not need an insulating film. Those lids are often vented to let heat out. However, damping it to prevent ringing can offer some improvements.
this video shows up first and the website lags behind barely anything on there, and we want to see how it looks assembled. this speaker is going to be a great seller and a full range beast of a thing :)
This looks like a go for launch 10 9 8 7… I’m excited for this product. Nice departure from the world of 6.5 inch woofers that promise things. Only exception is the Purifi. But in the end? It’s about moving air and rigidity. Can’t wait for the fully built price. I think you are sitting on a winner here.
The wider baffle means there is less baffle-step loss to compensate for, plus 2 woofers in parallel means +6db efficiency in efficiency. The Brute was already 90db efficient with just 1 woofer, so gaining the extra 4dB was easy.
Hey Richie and community. Looking for some advice. Sorry for my ignorance. Does a larger air could conductor sound better than a smaller one, and how to work out what size to buy.:) love your show.
That depends. If lower DCR and higher current is needed then the large coils have an advantage. However, in a tweeter circuit that is not the case. It's more about using the right size for the application.
it's not just a powered sub, it's a servo-controlled powered sub, for ultimate bass-management versatility. The servo sub can imitate other subs, eg bigger or smaller box, for a smoother or boomier sound,, so it fits any room size.
It is great to see a full sized speaker system. What’s the possibility of designing a set as a trapezoid E.G. JBL Ti5000, with the near side towards the listener? This would minimize the box emanating unwanted noise due to the front baffle is reduced in space.
Danny knocked it out of the park with this system. If I didn't already have an amazing speaker I built and needed a speaker, this would be my first choice.
