The shots of it refueling with those blades spinning so close gives me the d@mn willies, but they seem to make it work. Those things have saved so many people's butts over the years. I hope they can put the version with hotted up GE T408 motors into production - a Chinook for the 21st century.

@@EliteF22 Which should encourage the development of newer, more modern and sophisticated vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. Its slow and inefficient, which is one reason why the Marine Corp switched to the MV-22 Osprey multi-purpose transport aircraft instead. It too has its share of issues, but at least if will get better with future development and upgrades. You can give it new engines and avionics, but there's only so much you can do with a machine designed way back in the 1950s. This thing is already over a half century old when it comes off the assembly line.

Krane again, your ignorance. Care to look up the maintenance requirements on a v-22 vs a 47? As in how many maintenance hours are required per hour of flight. Yes it’s faster, but speed isn’t everything. You have to see the whole picture. The fact that you think just because it’s an older design it must be obsolete shows that arguing with you is pointless.

Even for training, all others were always late.... It got so bad that we brought a baseball kit from MWR and played baseball while we waited. We had some not even to bother to show up. When we got back to the command everybody was asking why you took so long to comeback, the bird cancelled? We were having too good of time. That was back in the 90's, no cell phones yet. Very good presentation !! I've since become a huge huge fan of the Chinook, as mentioned it's a proven design that is not only reliable and does the job, it's very very cost effective which is something that has become a major consideration in the world of aviation procurement. Boeing has been very smart about not incorporating too many new upgrades at once, because that is something that to me drives up cost, not too mention reliability and true performance. There indeed is something to be said about the old way of doing things, and I for one am glad that Boeing has more or less stuck to the original design here. One thing I would like to know is - gosh that refueling probe is awfully long - can I assume it is fixed as opposed to telescoping ?? I'd also be curious as to how much travel at the tip end there is in flight, and how much vibration it is subject to from the rotor downwash - which I assume diminishes in fwd flight... Again, great video which describes another great new Chinook variant/upgrade - winner winner chicken dinner :) :) :)

Newer chinook just has an updated flight deck, new composite blades rather than titanium honeycomb, and newer engines with more power for lift. More lift in helo's in some cases also means more speed. Helicopters are heavily limited in terms of speed with its ability to generate lift. Meaning litterally if a helo's airspeed is too fast it can lose lift and fall out of the sky.
@SCFoster

It is the same basic design, with upgrades to increase payload and range, while reducing maintenance, increasing reliability and updated electronics with aerial refueling. The MI-24 came out of Chad.
@jarink1
@jarink1 3 года назад
@@davidshanley558 At cruising speed, most of your lift is being generated on the side of the rotor disk where the blades are moving forward. That's because the rotational speed of the rotors adds to the speed of the air going over the blades. On the retreating side, it's reversed, meaning if you're flying at 120 kts, there's up to a 240kt differential in airspeed over the blades.

The older samples have some minor flaws, but because of it rugged design, it still manage to soldier on. Also thanks to some of those who flew who also made some reinforcements to like its flooring where it was done with flush riveting that they themselves with the help of their crews who manage to refit it with bolt screws that also being address in later models. But the best version of the Chinook went to those made in Japan.

@atomicskull6405
@atomicskull6405 3 года назад
Well yeah but the V-22 has less lift capacity too. That's the problem with tiltrotors they have higher disk loading because the proprotors have to compromise between disk loading in hover and prop drag in forward flight. Proponants like to paint a picture of tiltrotors being the future of vertical lift that will replace everything but they cannot due to basic aerodynamics. They will never be able to replace traditional helicopters in heavy lift applications due to some basic physics that you cannot engineer around. Any advances in powerplants and rotor design you apply to a tildrotor to make it better could also be applied to a traditional helicopter as well.

The Chinook seems like an ideal helicopter platform for a flying gunship, like a smaller version of an AC-130 gunship, but I wonder if it's stable enough(?). It could have more Gatling guns, or possibly a 30 or 40mm chain gun. A tube mounted sideways could hold a battery of side-firing 2.5" rockets.

Good to see and hear this.. This is a real and proved platform and should be used by more of the services, especially the Navy and Marines.. The guns could be heavier like a 40mm grenade launcher for WP/Smoke application or a pair of 30mm chain guns that the Apache uses.
