There is a downside now that I've lived with this substrate for more time indoors. It is super dusty if not kept wet. Ultra fine dust, 360 degrees floor to ceiling just from the lizards walking around in their oversized pin. Maybe better, less dust spread if contained in a more sealed enclosure.

Do you still use the GE heat bulbs???

Yes, I do and will when my tegus come out of brumation. A lot of warmth comes out of these bulbs which provide option to place it further away and still get whats under it warm. I need to buy some more. My last one went out. Hopefully still at Walmart. Still an even cheaper option to a 60 watt sold "reptile" bulb. can buy to of these for one 60 watt zoo med.

I just bought 2, 100 watt zoo med ceramic infared heat emitter today to try out. In all these years Ive never owned them. Buy one get the other half off. Bought 2 -100 watt for $55. I'm getting ready for this upcoming Tegu party when they get active. Brumation sucks but does give me time to worry less about what they are doing when I'm not at home and I can travel a few days at a time.

@@GettingthruLife how far from the basking spot do you keep them??
@GettingthruLife
@GettingthruLife Год назад
@@christianmaulsby5794 Just depends on what temp you want the intended basking surface to reach. I have an infrared temp gun which is helpful (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00837ZGRY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). For tegu basking 110-115 degrees is about where you want it. Also if your tegu never or rarely goes under/stays under a heat/light source likely to indicate it's too hot or harsh. If an animal sits there for hours then likely an indication it's not warm enough. In my case with my two crazy tegus, they seemed to always want to damage all my light by hanging from them or whacking them into pieces. With my setup as in my cage parameters, I have to keep about 3 feet of distance (between lights and lizards) to keep them from getting up at the bulbs. Hence why I need higher watt/higher output bulbs. I would suggest these bulbs don't last over a year as claimed but maybe 4-5 months. Just want the bulbs to remain still once you start using them. Just leave them alone, no movement. Accidental bumps, knocks and vibrations will shorten their lifespan. Also, the typical dome light, metal shades shorten the life of 100+ watt bulbs because it traps the heat around the bulb and makes them get ultra, ultra hot which shortens their lifespan. Hot bulbs need some airflow to keep their core temp manageable.

I bought a couple more not long ago like March 2023. Good value at 4.99 each. I used about 20 inches away from my lizards because they will get broken otherwise.
