I've been driving a VERY long time (I'm in the mid 70's), so I can relate to much of what he is saying about the "fun" factor however there are a couple of points that need to be addressed: Firstly the issue of handling, when one has a car with the large, heavy battery of an electric, the center of gravity is much lower. That means that the vehicle seems to hug the road, always! (Except on slick ice.) I find myself flying through sharp curves with little or no braking. I haven't had so much fun driving since I was a teenager! The other main point that I'd have is in electrical charging. Unless one lives in a high-rise apartment building a built-in electric charger is a must. The only time charging stations are needed are in long, cross-country trips.
I live in an apartment building and I'm planning on buying a Tesla in the far future. I don't plan on renting or buying a house anytime soon (though maybe that'd be a better investment than a Tesla), so I'm trying to figure out exactly how often I'd have to visit a charging station and how much I'd have to spend on that monthly.
EatSleepDrive agreed. In your video you stated how you didn’t like having to futz on the screen to engage the wipers. Just letting you know there’s an easier way.
Another great video! You've only had the car for a week but your observations and critiques are spot on in my opinion. I too love the growling sound of an engine, but the stealth power and speed of a Tesla means you can use those attributes more often without being judged. For me, that's what makes it more fun.
I love your comment about being able to use the power without attracting attention. Several years ago, I took a model S down 4th street in Cinci. I think I hit 70mph and no one even noticed.
I've had my AWD Long Range Model 3 for 7 months and it has been amazing. I wired a 240v 50A outlet to my garage and can charge at roughly 30 miles range added per hour. I have had very little issues with phone connectivity thankfully. I'm using an iPhone 7. I can also say about the wipers that yes, in certain situations (a light drizzle or sprinkle) the auto wipers aren't perfect but I just tap the end of the left stalk for a quick wipe. The auto wipers are 1000% improved though in the time I've owned mine. It seems to get better and better at knowing when to turn on and at what rate to go. It will only get better over time as the neural networks improve by collecting more camera data from the cars. This leads into really one of the best things about the car that you can't really get a sense of from driving for a week: The software updates come at a pace of about 1-2 times a month and the car just gets better and better after every update. UI improves, Autopilot improves, braking improves and even the performance improves. Recently there was an update that improved acceleration and max energy output by 5%. Getting a software update is really like Christmas for Teslas. It's that same kinda feeling we had with mobile phone updates back 5+ years ago when everyone was excited about what new features would be coming with a new OS. Tesla is really the most innovative auto company out there right now IMO and they make an awesome product. Cheers for the nice review!
@@chrisp5550 We've calculated so far about $20 or so a month extra for charging my car at home. I've saved anywhere from $50 to $300 a month on gas depending on how much I drive. The average seems to be around $70.
@@chrisp5550 There's also a very nice feeling as you drive past gas stations and dimly recall how you used to go there to fill your tank with gas, while now you usually just plug and unplug at home or work. The only reason for an EV to enter a gas station is to air up the tires, buy a candy bar or soda, or use the bathroom.
John Shalamskas That's one of those things nobody includes in reviews unless they've been driving electric for more than 6 months. I haven't been to a gas station in nearly two years. I rarely pay attention to the prices except once in a great while, but I've seen them anywhere from like $1.80 to $3.50 per gallon during the time I've paid the exact same rate for my car the whole time, and all of it a significant savings over gas even when gas was about $1.80. Last time I stopped at one to get ice cream on the way home from a movie I about puked from the stench. It's kind of like smoking in that way. People used to smoke everywhere until they banned it in most public places, after which you found out how awful it smelled. Gas is the same way. If you're filling up once or twice a week you don't notice the smell much because you're used to it. But when you haven't pulled into a gas station for over a year, wow does it really hit you!
On the at-home charging situations, Technology Connections here on RU-vid has done a couple of videos about it for his Chevy Bolt. The Cliff Notes are that it's not an issue if you have somewhere to garage the car, and if you don't there's always charging stations.
You do not need a special charger to get to level 2 charging at home. If you can do basic electrical work like adding a breaker, running a wire and installing an outlet it is fairly cheap. The Model 3 long range would need a 50 amp breaker, 6 gauge wire(4 wire bundle, the most expensive part) and a NEMA 14-50 outlet. Each area has its own code for this but if the wire is under 60 feet and is in a conduit you should be good in most locations. Once that is done the charger that came with the car will charge at 30 miles per hour. So every morning your fuel is topped of but of course if you want the battery to last set the charge limit to 90%.
Are you seriously suggesting anyone can do 220 installations? Most people can’t even change a plug. No one without proper education and or certifications should be doing anything with that kind of power. Great way for someone to kill themselves or burn their house down.
larry Spiller No they can’t, at least not properly and safely. It needs to either be in conduit or through the studs so it’s protected. Most don’t have the tools to do this. I’m not saying you have to be a certified electrician but you need to have a fairy high skill level to do it safely.

Either way the typical gas savings in a year should make up most the costs of a professional installation and a 120v outlet can add 50 miles over 12 hours no problem. Average American drives just 35 miles per day
Nice. I've had my M3 for over a year and a half and have 16k miles on it. Having driven what I estimate to be about 2 million miles so far in my life, I consider myself to be a darn good driver. But I realized that in the Tesla I am the second best driver in the car - and I'm the only person in it. And this car relaxes you. I fully expect it to be able to take me to the store, or hospital or Oregon by autopilot within the next few years.
Seeing these at the parking lot in college let’s me know that this is the future of my generation, the car industry is changing and I think it’s for the best there will be people who think otherwise but man with the limited resources on this earth this is a good alternative.

My manual M3 is a chore doing something like going to the grocery store. The only time I really enjoy it is back road stuff so I agree, EV for daily stuff and a fun car for weekends. Makes sense.
When the car is not "answering" when trying to open the door that should unlock with proximity to phone, it's mostly always because the car is sleeping . It need's about 10 seconds to wake up, and react to you opening the door. It goes to sleep after about 20 minutes of being parked. (not sure exactly)
You can tell it is slowly growing on you more and more. I am interested to hear what you thought of the Mustang acceleration after days in the TM3P. Side note you can tab the end of the directional stalk to use the wipers. Push to wipe and fluid. Also car has to be unlocked for charge port door to open at touch. Otherwise any jabroni could mess with your charging.

A 40 amp dryer outlet charges at the same speed as level 2 without the $500 cost of Tesla's charger. The level 2 Tesla charger is for modle S and X 70 amp onboard chargers. I will still charge the M3 at 32 amps.
Fortunately, in one of the latest software updates the windshield wiper sensitivity issue has been addressed and is so much better. Prior to the update, it annoyed the crap out of me as well. Now I'm quite happy!
Yes, but the car can drive itself. How can the car drive itself but yet it can't clean the window automatically which works flawlessly on every other car I've driven? It's a minor gripe, but still silly they could do everything else so well and fall short here.

For most owners, the 110V charging is only used for emergency backup or for long trips. There are 110V outlets everywhere but they are dreadfully slow. When you own one, you'll want to have a 240V circuit/outlet in your garage. That way, whenever you drive out in the morning, you are fully charged. For me, that means I start with 290 miles of range every day. The only time I charge to 325 miles is when I am going on a long trip. (such as to Akron OH from my home in VA!) That's the only time when I use the Superchargers
Rodney L Wright That's a mixed bag. I've been driving my EV for almost 2 years now only using the 110 volt charger. I always planned to get a level 2 but just never ever needed the extra speed so laziness won out for me. Some people do drive enough every day to need a little extra speed, but I'd wager a good half of people would never need it even if they don't start out full every day. You could easily make up the difference on the weekend once a week and stay ahead.
🤣🤣 after having my used Model S for over a year, zero cost of ownership besides electricity. You. An live on 110volt. You need dryer connection or wall charger.
The automatic windshield wipers are a bit of a problem for me too, but I use the button on the turn signal stalk to blip the wipers as needed. What using one of the three front facing cameras for detecting the raindrops may depend on drop size. Misty rain can perhaps be confused with dust glare on a dry day. What Tesla may want to do is in software, note when the driver is using the single wipe button often, and add the sensitivity just for the drive that day. Bad for the wipers if it is just bugs or dried dirt.

Too many issues here. Model 3 owner. Since oct 2018, I got 20k miles clocked. I commute about 120 miles for work in the Bay Area. I never use the supercharger. The problem with this video is you didn’t bother to setup a decent charger for your car at home. I got lucky, I live in a mobile home with a 220v/30a hookup. All I needed was an adapter for the charger that comes with the car $37. I can charge about 22 miles per hour. I start charging at 11pm for the cheap ev rates and I charge to about 210 miles. Enough for a round trip and enough to get to work again if I forget to charge the night before. On those days, there’s a normal charger near my office. I admit the wipers suck, but it’s a non issue. Just set it to intermittent and get over it. If you’re driving safely and have had any practice in the past with a cell phone it takes little effort and the 3 has great early warning radar standard. Super chargers are a little busy, but I’ve rarely had to wait more than 5 Minutes for a spot. Because the chargers penalize you for not moving when you’re done charging (idle charge), the line moves pretty fast. Dude. Drive a tesla for a month with a decent charger setup and try again. Look for technology connections channel. He has some great vids about EVs, dispelling common misconceptions.
Gotta love that charging station in Ohio. I live around the corner from Tesla here in Fremont and the charging stations run about 20 deep. There's ALWAYS a wait at the charging locations here in Fremont. I usually charge super late at night (12:30am) when super chargers become more available.
Great video...honest and well-delivered assessment of important practical considerations. I own a new hybrid, but got to ride in a rented Tesla X recently and it only took one short trip to be sold on a full EV for my next car. The acceleration alone is amazing in an area where merging and lack of people's skill with alternate-feed merging is a problem (Boston area). Here in Northern New England too few charging stations still except near the 95 corridor.
Thanks for the video! No one would own a Tesla without a 240 VAC outlet in their garage! I put mine in for $40, including the trip to Home Depot in two hrs. I find charging my Tesla less of a hassle than charging my phone as I only do it 2 or 3 times a week. A big plus, I never would have predicted, is that charging it at home is less of a hassle than making trips to the gas station. On a road trip it works out that roughly every 3 hrs you stop for 30 min, usually get food and rest. I hate but I usually have to make stops when the car doesn't need charging just to take a break. In FL owning the car two years and 45K mi I have only had to wait at a Supercharger for 10 min once; but there was a reason for that, everyone was on the way back from a SpaceX launch at Kennedy in their Teslas.

For the wipers you can just press the end of the indicators command. It will activate the wipers for a few seconds and bring the wipers menu on the screen. However I agree it would be nice to be able to adjust sensibility.
Yeah, the wiper sensitivity is rather variable. Some days it just works, and other days you cannot get auto to turn those wipers on without a nudge! That's where the left steering wheel stick comes in handy (rather than dealing with the touch screen). There seem to be quite a few cases in the Tesla where a little more control in the configuration menus would go a long way in improving the ownership experience! 1. Provide a configuration slider that allows changing auto-wiper sensitivity. 2. Provide a slider that controls how aggressively the car follows the car in front when the car in front moves (from a red light, etc.). I find that it's always about a half second or more slower than I would be, in following the car in front from a traffic light. Always! 3. Provide a configuration slider that allows me to change the time that the car allows before bugging you about holding the wheel (when self-driving). I find that it's WAY too naggy in that regard. I'm always tweaking the speed or volume controls on the wheel, just to let it know I'm still awake!! Come on Tesla, we don't need to be nagged every minute or two! Well, maybe somebody in Tesla will figure out these are ALL easy to fix, and will simply deal with it in a coming software update! The nice thing about owning a Tesla and having these issues, is knowing that it COULD be fixed with a OTA software update!
Another thing to keep in mind that a lot of these types of forget is when talking about charging stations being crowded, and I think this stems from our long lasting use of gas stations, but unlike gas or diesel vehicles, most people if not all Tesla owners charge at home, and the charging stations for EVs is mainly for travelers or the owner who needs a splash of juice because for whatever reason maybe a breaker flipped and so on and whatever. Most charging stations o see are empty with lots of chargers and one car on a rarity. So something to keep in mind.

Good video. One thing you may not be able to appreciate are the updates that continually improve performance, range, safety and function of the 3. Also consider that Tesla makes an incredibly safe car and that with the Zen like driving experience provides peace of mind..
I was at that same Supercharger a few weeks ago. The Supercharger in Louisville sees a lot of use, but Cincy has three (including the one at the Tesla dealership). Meijers seems to have a deal with Tesla, and there is a ton of them anywhere there is a Meijers.
I think one of the problems in California (besides the sheer amount of them) is that soo many people live in apartments (cause well homes in the bay are a million dollars for something small). So you can do level 1 or 2 charging at your home, many people can't even do that so they are HAVING too charge there as their only source. There are quite a few jobs that have charging stations that do help to.
It's a nice review but you don't really show what it's like to live with it - I mean you've lived with it for a week. That's not long enough time for you to truly get used to it and learn all of its "hidden" features, quirks etc. (example - wipers button on the left stalk). I mean for comparison, smartphone reviewers usually spend at least 2 weeks with a new phone before making a video review - I'd imagine you'd need to spend at least 2 to 4 weeks with a car like this before you can say that you've actually lived with it and gotten used to it, and collected enough info and experience for a full review. It's a great video none the less, very informative and fun. This is just meant to be a positive critique from a random viewer :) Keep making great videos!

As for the other stuff: interior, noise....its purely aesthetic. I wanna minimize my carbon footprint and Tesla is the way to go for that mission. Tesla makes sense.
I appreciate that you are keeping it real. Some people have. electric ovens, electric cloths dryers, and air conditioning. All of these things require 240 volt circuits, but people like you that are living in a cave won’t have access.. Bless you you helping the homeless evaluate if an EV is right for them. By the way, the latest Superchargers can do 1,000 miles per hour when that battery is depleted. It’s good that you avoided the high performance Superchargers in your video.
Lovely review buddy. This is probably the coolest car available at the moment imo but you have a better spec in the USA than here on the UK. For instance, set a location and it pretty much drives you there. That's a genius addition. Also charging points here are still lacking a bit so it would worry me on a long journey. But I love it, such a great car. Like you said though, there needs to be more switchgear for simple functionality of common use items

Auto windscreen wiper sensors don't work like you mentioned. It's not a matter of just 'turn up the sensitivity', the camera monitors movement on your windscreen, when rain is hitting it or moving across it, the sensors pick this up and activate the wipers. If water gradually builds up, is very fine or its a simple splash and the water remains stagnant on the windscreen, the sensors is a lot less likely to pick this up. Lots of cars is like this, some cars have better programming than others.
That windshield wiper glitch isn't minor , that's a major concern! Someone should be able to clear the windshield whenever they need to with ease . Without having to touch a screen you'd think they'd put a button or a lever in there or something .
You forgot to factor in your roof area. Depending on driving patterns, you could probably cover most of your energy needs from solarpanels. If you work mostly from home, that'd be ideal. If not, you'd probably need a powerwall or two...
You may or may not know, but most big airport parking garages have dedicated Electric car parking stalls, some with charging stations, very convenient. Also usually the closest to the doors to the terminal.
What's really crazy, is the #epedal in the #nissanleaf. I drove one for 20 minutes and never used the friction brakes. And, the Regen was so aggressive, I actually added range in the city while using it. Highly recommend trying it if you already haven't.
Not a genuine experience--Given that you have a house/garage, you'd be able to at LEAST charge via a 220 volt outlet, which would give you ample charging for any reasonable commute/in-city driving. That also feeds into the 80% everyday charge cap--no need to keep the car's 'tank' absolutely full when you start out every morning with nearly 250 miles of range. Right now the only people who run into charging issues/range anxiety on a regular basis are those living in apartments with no handy access to overnight charging. That sucks right now, but should change over the next five years or so as chargers proliferate.
Think of it this way. There are no gas stations at your house, you have to go out to get gas. It can be the same way for EVs, just go out & charge. I don't have a charger at my apartment either but I plan to get an EV & there are already 2 Teslas where I'm at.

a nice "real-life" video, with not that much tech-talk. in a 220V environment, like Europe, the overnight charge with a normal household (level 1) connection is more than the 35 miles that you get with 110V - but still, I guess many viewers found your clip very useful and informative.

Spot on review. The rain sensing wipers are terrible. Tip for Elon: Hire more Germans. The car connecting to your phone too quickly is annoying. (Think--When you get in, the podcast you were listening to has been playing for minutes and you have to rewind it every time.) The instant acceleration from any speed is sublime. Never having to wait for a downshift/rev to accelerate, always having a full tank in the morning--makes all the annoyances worthwhile.
Closest ICE vehicle I can think of that sounded like an electric was the 1982-1985 Honda Accord with factory exhaust. As a kid I thought it was the coolest thing ever as it just whirred like the Jetsons' car. By the time I was old enough to drive it was so rusty the exhaust had fallen off and its kiss of death was when the control arm rusted off the unibody.
Nice video. Let me add my 2 cents as an owner for a year. If you are not having fun in this car then you're doing it wrong. Did an impromptu drag race from a light with a gasser and earned the single digit salute for winning. hahahaha! I am a motor head and I am now down to 4 cars - I only drive the gas cars now when there is a schedule conflict with my wife. I don't even know how much gas costs.(true) If you own the car then you will want to install the 240 v plug (by an electrician) because instead of taking all night to charge, it only takes a few hours. You can use the charger in the kit as your home unit, unplug it and take it with you when you go on trips. I wish there was an option to make some noise (like George Jetson's car) because it sometime startles people it is so quiet. My gas cars draw the wrong kind of attention. This may be a big item for super hot (or cold) areas. I can turn on the AC or heater from inside the restaurant before going to the car, with the APP. Didn't buy the summon yet, but I will when Tesla allows it to come out of its parking space to come to the building and pick me up. (that is in beta testing) When in traffic the advanced cruise control will do the creeping (and inching along) for you. God bless you Tesla! Its warning system has saved me from two potential close calls, and it is making me a better driver (sigh) I've had a lot of cars and have driven over 2 million miles, and this car is right up there with the best. Oh yeah, I get software updates whenever they need to. Updates overnight and doesn't cost a dime. I could go on... Thanks. Hope you all buy one!
oldrrocr 2 million miles? You are either a trucker or very old. Or maybe a cop or chauffeur or similar. I have about a million under my belt and that took driving professionally for most of my adult life starting at 18, and I'm 46 now. But I have to say, that much driving experience does give one a much better perspective on what driving actually is and what's good vs what's not.
For the summon feature if you park across spaces it will struggle. Try while it's parked and the rain sensor is a separate feature from the camera. On the left stock you can adjust the sensitivity
I've driven ONLY a Nissan Leaf for the past 2 years. Drove it down to Florida from New York even. No you don't need a gas car. I've gone 30,000 miles without buying gas.
You do need a gas car out west of the Rockies though. Towns further and mountainous terrain just drains the battery. Forget about going out on a hike or maybe camping with an electric car.
So for my usual driving, I'd need to charge it once every 2 weeks... not bad especially since I can do it for free at work. I think I'd have to do a trip from Tucson to San Diego every month just because though.
You must have made this video before the Deep Rain update. A common pitfall of Tesla newbies is having the assumption that the vehicle is static. That is to say that the features of the car are what they are and they will not change over time. That's probably based on a decade or two of past experiences with all other automakers in that it is how it typically works but not with Tesla's. They constantly update and improve their product so something that is a gripe today may not be a gripe tomorrow, so to speak. If you were to drive the car on a rainy day, now, they have sent an OTA update for that particular function, and it works much better.
Personally I don’t think Tesla is going anywhere but up. They have a tough battle to fight to continue to keep a positive image in the marketplace, because there are so many negative factors on a daily basis some true some not true that affect people‘s perception of the company. In the long run I think Tesla will survive and become a very stable in sanely profitable company.
@@Kodico if I had to rely on the truth of stock prices that are driven down by all the short sellers ... Also consider that Tesla bought Maxell and will be making thier battery production insainley more efficient and potentially even longer range.. I truely believe Tesla will prevail in the long haul... But big oil and the deep nested greed of politics will be a tough battle right to the end...
You also forgot to mention that by this time next year, Tesla will be producing cars in its Chinese gigafactory for the largest EV market in the frigging world. None of these will be brought to the US, but they may supply the rest of the world. I don't work for Tesla and I don't own any stock... yet!
People always question if Tesla will be around in X number of years, but not one of them has paid any attention to what Tesla actually does as a company operationally. If they need to be more profitable, they could flip a switch and be more profitable tomorrow without ever touching the price of their cars. That's because nobody ever looks at where the money actually comes from or goes at Tesla. Every time they've gotten more money coming in, they've ramped up production or pushed forward more aggressive plans and shifted the money to that. One of the biggest examples is the expansion rate of superchargers, and not just locations, but charging stations at those locations too. Those are all completely optional expenses for them, and it's a ton of money. Then there's the gigafactories. Those are all built on what would have been Tesla profits over the past half dozen years. Then there's the Powerwall. Then there's SolarCity. Then there's the Tesla semi. The list of optional expenses they've shifted their revenue into goes on and on, and almost none of those things is required or necessary at this point for Tesla to operate or survive - it's just what they do to take care of their customers and their owners' experiences owning their products. So yes, they will be around in a year, in five years, in ten years, and so on, until they decide their mission to speed up the adoption of sustainable transport is complete. And then they'll either continue to exist or change their mission and do the next thing. But the Tesla doom and gloom people don't EVER look at any of those factors. They just have their own narrow minded, blinders-on agenda that they're driving. None of the usual Wall Street people had ever understood Tesla, how it operates, or why. They've been conditioned to where they can't even conceive of another way to succeed in business. Their loss, I say.
Just bought a Model 3. So much fun driving. Smooth, swift. Some confusion over whether we bought the full navigation system. Discussing that with Tesla now, though I doubt it will go anywhere. Surely full navigation is worth the big price.
You know, Tesla raised $4.2 Billion in Q2 of 2019. $2B from investment and $2.2 Billion in carbon swaps! Tesla is going to be around for a long, long time. Once you've used an electric car, you have to get used to the slow gas engine which you don't notice it if gas is all you've known, bug I find it difficult to drive gas cars now because the responses are so much slower. You have a sensitivity adjustment on the wipers that can be adjusted...
One question that comes to mind is "did you have the Key in your person when you were trying to open the charging port?" cause I saw you use the app from the phone when it didn't open, well it doesn't open if it doesn't detect the key so that may be why it wasn't opening.
Prius has that in Japan... There are issues, its a small area, so they get like 3 miles an hour from the sun which is enough for some if out all day in it. The sun is not always on your roof line though. The idea is great though, I like it.... although not on a Tesla as they have all glass roofs... :)
Teslas get something like 3 miles per kWh. A 1 kW photovoltaic array is much larger than the car, and you'd only get 3 miles of range per hour of peak solar illumination. So it it is not practical to charge the main battery with a car-mounted solar panel. You could use a large PV array near the supercharger to store energy in batteries and use that to charge vehicles.
Ik a lot about Tesla because my Grandmother owns a model X. The only thing i’m curious about...is how big the energy bill is. (without solar panels on your house.)
I have gotten use to just tapping the toggle switch on the stalk to clear the window of rain when it's not raining hard but I do have the peeve as well with why the rain sensor should work more effectively..
Tashi Tsering I see stupidity is strong with this one........we've been driving ICE for over 100 years now. They're pretty perfected too. Zero range anxiety with any ICE. Oil change once a year running synthetic and super reliability ( Lexus). You have zero clue.
Newzchspy if you think 20-30% efficient is "pretty perfected", then you'd have zero complaint about an electric car that's 80-90% efficient being much more "perfected". Enjoy your horse drawn wagon.
I got a level 2 charger installed. It’s caled a Nema 14-50 if you’re calling electricians and here outside if Silicon Valley that only cost me $500. So likely cheaper elsewhere. With it I can charge up overnight and 8 months I have been to a Supercharger once - and that was just a weekend ago just to try it out despite not needing it. If you have solar, which I also got through Tesa/SolarCity - with the Powerwall I am doing a 30-mile each way plus personal driving on the sun. (And solar pays for itself in any region where you can sell your extra energy back to the grid and have good sushine).
Technically a nema 14-50 isn't level 2 charging. It's just charging at a higher voltage. A level 2 charging station consists of an EVSE that runs on a 220 volt outlet. You're just charging from the 220 volt outlet directly (unless I've misunderstood). That's not the same as a level 2 charger. Most electric cars can't just plug straight into the wall and require an EVSE in between, and that's the part that makes up the level 2 charger. I drive a different car so I don't know if you're still using the Tesla EVSE when you charge on 220 from a nema 14-50 or not, but if you do, then that is actually your level 2 charger and you are actually correct and I misunderstood.
Funny they made Model 3 , the cheaper car for the masses, i would still have to work in Western- European countries for 2 years without holidays, eat bread and water, dont go anywhere to afford the base model. Somebody said there is too much money in this world, i dont see it that way. I need money! NOW! I WANT A TESLAAAA :D
Love my model 3, but yeah, it eats tires, mine lasted 21k miles. I got an alignment that costs 275 dollars if tesla does it. And it takes special tires that have higher load capacity etc, those are 300 dollars each. So set of tires is 1200 dollars, 200 labor to install them. So my 18 month trip to a tesla service center cost me 1700... (one tire was almost gone so they wanted to replace them all). Fun stuff. 45k warranty tires, said no warranty because alignment was off. Fun stuff.

Thanks for a great video. Love watching vids like this. A true car lover who is honest enough to admit electric cars are the future and ultimately will be the choice for most day to day driving - but also true that burning a bit of gas and making some noise is a primal joy that cant be so easily replaced.
I am totally excited about buying one and I live in Cincinnati too! I do travel to NY and Boston especially in the summer. This video was awesome and helped give me more insight on it.
Please explain to me why one would deal with these issues and limitations and costs when they don’t have to? Why get an electric car? What advantages do they offer? Quieter than an already quiet internal combustion engine car? Good low-end torque? Is that it?
Practical review. Comment on comfort, roominess, interior space in the Model 3? Does it "fit" a large frame 6'2" person as well as, say an Avalon does? Also, what's the backseat room like? Is the legroom for the backseat passengers acceptable?
I use the Tesla wall mount hardwired to a 60 Amp service. Getting 45 miles every hour plugged in. More range in an hour that takes you all night for only 35 miles. If your serious its well worth the 500.00 investment and some states you get a EV rebate to install at your home. I received 2,500 dollars
The charge door won't open if the doors are locked. Most charging is done at home on a Level II charger (240V). I haven't gone to a Supercharger for daily driving ever. I mention this because you wanted to live with an EV for a week and see how it goes, but lack proper home charging. Superchargers are really only meant for long-distance travel. And I don't think EVs are less fun, they're just different fun. And they don't ruin the planet with their emissions, so you can have fun with that too. :-)

It's the energy from the sun that powers trees and makes them grow via photosynthesis, turning the carbon in atmospheric CO2 into the carbon based fuels used by cars and generators and public utilities to generate electricity. But you can also charge on a few solar panels and skip the trees and the few hundred thousand years of rotting underground in the middle of that process like quite a few people with electric cars do. You do pay up front for the infrastructure, but once you've bought that, you're good to drive for free for literally decades.
I have a Tesla Model 3 and wouldn't trade it for the world. We installed a special electrical plug (same electrical connection you use for a motor home) inside our garage to charge it up every night and we added solar panels to our home. We have saved lots of $$$$ every month. I think if you rent, it might be more difficult cause you will depend on those electrical stations that are scattered throughout town. Caution: if your Tesla runs out of power in the city or wherever, a tow truck will not be able to help you because the back tires lock up and can't be moved by towing it.
I have driven a tesla and their great but you must take into account using the heater wipers etc. all use the battery power an I think you must take around 20% from your indicated milage range.
I find it odd people never thought if they had a full tank of gas every day when regular driving yet they keep thinking -oh i better charge it to full all the time if its electric - i have to drive 30 miles next day and the range is 300 - yet thinking about the wanting to always charge to 100% seems kinda weird actually.
Not really. People are willing to put off getting gas because you can find a gas station at any corner in a large enough city, and because it takes like 10 minutes. Charging your Tesla is a significant time investment and depending on where you live, there's a good chance you might not be able to find a spot if you suddenly find yourself on empty. So it makes a lot of sense to want to charge it overnight. I agree it doesn't make sense to always want it on FULL though. I assume those people are planning trips.
Auto wiper fixed now with last update and learning from each input to get even better. You dont have to use the screen to turn them on, you can hit the button on stalk.
I'm leaning toward the I8. The reason is my drive is not that far so I can go mostly on electric and also I can get lazy and forget to charge the Tesla.
An issue I have with Tesla vehicles is that the lovely screen is off center and you have to take your eyes too far off the road to read the screen. There should be a secondary screen right in front of the driver or a HUD system so the driver doesn’t have to take his eyes that far off the road to read an off center screen
Everyone says you get used to it quickly and it becomes second nature. Your eyes already have to glance in all three mirrors to maintain situational awareness. Looking at the speedo is actually easier if the 3 because it's higher up.
You have to take your eyes just as far off the road to read a normal dashboard, actually. It's only a matter of whether you also glance slightly right or not. Just as far right as to check your rear view mirror, by the way. Or even further to check either of your side mirrors which you're supposed to be doing every few seconds. It seems really annoying, I know, because I thought the same thing before I used that layout. But it actually doesn't make any negative difference at all in real life.
I live in a golf cart community, The Villages, in Florida. When we first moved here, everyone seemed to drive electric carts. We enjoyed the benefits he mentioned- Quiet, Clean, re-charge at home, etc. The vast majority of carts were electric. Then the community expanded. Today, the development is 15 miles from end to end, soon to be 30 miles when two bridges over the Turnpike are completed. Pretty soon you couldn't count on getting home from golf if you went more than 6 miles to the courses. I had to replace my 6 batteries twice in 7 years at the cost of $700. Today, 85% of the people drive gas carts. Electrics are used by non-golfers for shopping, visiting recreation areas, etc. This will happen with electric cars. Three things must change to increase their popularity. Range must go to 500+ miles, recharges should go from 1% to 100% in under 15 minutes at easy to find stations, and batteries must last for 50-60000 miles. Else, forget it.
Regarding your overnight charge - Either your 'overnight' is measured in minutes or American outlets are dealing out electrons in single figures (LOL). I know youy guys only have 110V but I thought your Amp limits were higher (your cables are certainly thicker). In UK & Europe at 230V and 13 Amps then with the 'granny lead' you can get near 3kW continuous power. Therefore overnight (8 to 10 hours?) you should get approx 20-30kW-hours of energy into your battery which is equivalent to 80 to over hundred miles in range in a model 3. On my level 2 point at home I would easily get over 200miles in a single night charge (or nearer 300miles in fact) whichis excellent.
