In this video, I discuss and demonstrate another alternative for picking up a dropped motorcycle that in my opinion, takes less effort and is definitely easier on the back.
You may be asking yourself, what are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

AT 13:21 - you collapse your arms. Correct way - Keep the arms straight, your back upright and drive through the hips. I was taught to do it that way over 30 years ago by some old timers in a biker gang. I never knew what the technique was called but that's how I've always done it. I didn't know it was some kind of well kept secret. Whenever, I've done it, people looked at me like I was the Incredible Hulk but I explained to them that it's just body leverage. Which was easy for me to understand because that's what we were taught in Aikido martial arts class. I taught a 5'2" 103 pound woman to do it with a full dresser. It's especially effective for when the ground is sandy or slippery or when it's raining. You don't slip or lose control. It's the best method in my opinion. Very safe!
@LynxStarAuto
@LynxStarAuto 2 года назад
Yep body leverage entirely. You're basically using your torso as a giant breaker bar. On Violet though, just because of how wide she is with that front fender, it's probably more difficult to keep both arms straight. However, the pushing arm should be kept straight at all times. Makes sense. I'm def going to give it a try, although my bike is light for a cruiser (560 lbs), but I've been using the "Harley lay an egg" lifting method.

Robert picked up Blaze slightly different on the right versus left. At 8:40, It was RH push plus LH pull vs Right leg back. AT 10:48, upper body reversed but lower body remains with right leg back. I assume Robert is right leg dominated thus the same stance on both sides. That means there is some difference in body angles and leverages against the bike at right versus left. May be every person is different but I wonder if one stance is easier than the other in practice? I could use every oz of help as my Ultra wins every time when I test the conventional method. Thanks for the great video and comments.

Hi Rob. I tipped my bike two days ago - I forgot I put the kickstand up, got sidetracked taking video while sitting in the saddle. I was about to get off, the bike leaned and went down while I held it best as I could. I was on a serious hill, cars passing by, and I remembered this video. I had practiced it a couple of times right after watching your video a year ago. I just did as you did here, and voila! The bike was up in no time, and my back was in top health. Thanks again for this!

Holy crap! This worked for me! I tipped my bike over in the garage while rolling it to a new spot. There was no way the walk backwards method was going to work with the angle the bike was laying. Can't believe how straight forward and safe this method is.

I will say to anyone who tries picking up there bike like this , Definitely make sure the bike is in gear. My first time trying it I was in neutral and ended up going around in a circle in my garage.

I have tried the seat method. I'm 67 years old and my right leg is a prosthesis so driving the bike up with my legs isn't going to happen. I saw the video of the Aruba police standing the bikes up with this method. It also helps if you rock the bike down on the engine and bag guards then drive the bike up on the rock back. I ride an electra glide classic. She's heavy. I need all the help I can get.

I dropped my ultra classic while making a u-turn on a uphill street. So the bike was on left side and wheels uphill and seat downhill. Gas leaked out of the overflow tube and street became slick with oily residue. Alone on a road trip and no one around I thought I would never get that bike up. I love my bike but at 72 that experience had me thinking about moving to a Road King. I am now a little worried about riding my Smoky Mtn in the the evenings as I’ve had to u-turn due to a bear in the road before. I guess I should practice on hills but just seems too dicey.

Rob, Like a rookie, and I'm 69, and no rookie at much, even recovering from a car accident broken back in 2004, I didn't properly set the jiffy stand on my 950 lb Road King after pulling it into my garage. You, and all of your viewers, know what was next. My foot dodged a bullet. What I want you to know is, you helped me pick my bike up today. The best part is, other than no injuries, no one saw it happen! I was so embarrassed that I couldn't even come in the house and tell my wife. I may take the incident to my grave. Bottom line is, you taught me a skill. Seriously, Many Thanks, Chuck in GA.

Excellent lesson! When I had a BMW GS I watched a BMW instructor pick his big 1200 GS up almost the same. He laid it down on the right side and grabbed the right grip with both hands and just picked it up, then did the same on the other side. He was about 5'7-8 and not a weight lifter type. Even the narrator was impressed. The secret is that front tire acts as a lever--I think that's what happens. I like your method better.

Simmons i just want to point out that you help me a lot with this video as i watch you pull the road King out from your garage. I noticed as you pulled out you didn't waste any time putting your left leg up on the floorboards and also I noticed you using the rear brake to control the speed coming out along with the throttle and of course controlling the friction zone help me to really understand how it works for proper slow maneuvers. Have a friend who's been riding for quite some time going forward at least over 25 miles an hour and i try to explain to him as he and i practice our slow maneuvers at the local park as he questioned me using the rear brake and a throttle will be working against each other i told him he didn't understand that's controlling the bike i appreciate this video giving it two thumbs up and i am forwarding this video to my friend ASAP ! ! ! 🗨️👍😎👍

He stood up, walked to the Road King MC, grabbed the handle bars and yanked the mc upright. The front wheel came at least 6" off the ground. He got on and we continued our ride. This is a really great tip, thanks so much. It definitely makes more sense to me than doing it the more-typical way, as the full-squat position just isn't able to generate as much power as a more-extended position (and certainly not in my case, with a Dyna that lays lower over than a bagger...). Good stuff!

Hi Robert. I curently have a 2010 GL1800 Goldwing (luxury edition), usually ride 2 up (with my Queen/Wife of 43 years on board) and pull a trailer. Been riding various bikes now for some 50 years (yes started very young hahaha!). Back in '84 I won an around Australia competition called the NEWTS Run (North, East, West + South around Oz). From a very young age (as a kid & teen) I always employed the technique you demonstrated here for a dropped bike (right on left, left on right bars, walk through bike), just made sense to me. Great that you shared this with the world - well done! Never knew that many riders did not know this. Anyway, just came across your videos and realised that as I haven't dropped a bike since 1984, I should go get some carpet cutoffs and practice. Also love your low speed vids and yes I concur - keep revs up and feel the takeup zone of the clutch and moderate it with the rear brake. Great work mate, subscribed from here in Australia ! @Robert Simmons - Paying It Forward No lie! Today I was practicing tight left & right turns from a stop and I dropped my Indian Chief. My brother rushed over to help and I was like "I got this.. 💪🦵" Used this technique, and bamm! Got it on the first try! It was the first time I ever dropped the bike and first time using this method. So glad I watched this video a couple days before 🤞

I saw a video about the police guy picking up a victory vision. These bikes had a guards plate on it that kept it from going very far down an made it a lot easier to get up . They don’t make the bike now but looked like they could put that on all heavy bikes . I even heard that police that had the bikes practiced in emergencies not putting kick stand down jump off an jump back on an ride the victory back if . ? I’m 78 wish they still made that victory vision . I think the vision was only bike they put that on?

Put my Ultra Classic on it's side yesterday and tried this method. It worked really well. I did probably muscle it a little bit more than I should have and didn't use perfect technique, which just shows how well this works. Even without perfect technique it was still easy. Only thing I found was when the bike is down on the kickstand side, once you get it up, it feels awkward because your arms are kind of crossed and you have to hold it while getting the kickstand out.

I just saw your channel for the first time! Great info in a good down to earth format. I have been riding/teaching for 50 years and 30 yrs as a cop so naturally I cant bend any more. I teach these lifts since even at my age I do a lot of ADV back country riding solo on a fully loaded bike, especially on the BDRs as an Ambassador. As known, if you ride off road you WILL drop your bike regularly. My cross over from street riders take a while to get used to that. Its no big deal. You just dont want to hurt yourself doing it so practice is key. You do a great job showing from experience you will drop your bike and really good ways to lift. Keep doing what you do my friend and hopefully our paths will cross out there. Stay safe in all your travels!

Interesting. You call this dropping your bike, I might suggest sir, it is not. It is at a 45 degree angle resting on the highway pegs. Dropping your bike is it completely on its side, not on highway pegs. I say this only because I watched a 55 year old little lady...Lady, have her husband lay their fully dressed Ultra Limited, loaded with gear, on a hard rubber mat, completely on its side. In the demonstration, she showed how to get the bike up onto its wheels all by herself. I was surprised to say the least. I do not own a Harley yet, DAD (GOD) says it coming. Until then, I have you, Ryan Urlacher, and Traveling Tall to learn from. An expert, no I am not. But, your bikes are beautiful, and I realize you have a lot of money tied up in them. Yet, from way to many years working emergency services, seeing to many bikes laid down, hit, run over, by careless people, of just plain not paying attention on the part of the rider, picking one up, off it's side is not easy. Also, the older you get, the harder it is to pick it up. Weight x Mass x age=??? I mean you sir no, No, disrespect. Just the opposite. I would love to see you and Wood Jr. show us how to get these big bikes up on their wheels after laying on their sides (could Cross who rides with Wood Jr. pick his up off its side?) Again Sir, No disrespect meant. Yours in Christ Jesus; Scottishxpride, Tx.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 2 года назад
It’s a drop nonetheless. I didn’t sense any disrespect from your comment. Getting the motorcycle back onto the underside of the engine guard is a lot easier than uprighting it. Of course this all depends on the kind of motorcycle.
@gfunk63901
@gfunk63901 2 года назад
Having dropped an Indian chieftain rental and rented touring Harley’s, I can say the majority, if not all, have engine guards. None of these bikes usually never go further down than 40-45 degrees

I just discovered your channel. I learned a lot from Jerry Palladino after seeing him decades ago at a State H.O.G. rally. I don't know how I heard about you, but someone mentioned your videos, so I finally looked you up. It's interesting this is the first video I've watched and already have been introduced to a new method of picking up a motorcycle. I doubt I'll rush out and try it on my own bike (unless I have to) but during the season I usually get plenty of opportunities to pick up someone's bike. I've got a 38" inseam so getting low enough to pick up a heavy bike has always been a struggle. This does look like the perfect technique for someone tall.

Hey Rob the thumbnail on this video made me think… not another bike tip-over pick up video by a large fellow. But I’m so glad I clicked on this video and learned a new trick to pick up my bike. Im a short guy who loves road kings and I ride one now. I was able to do the ‘traditional’ way one time and I’m so glad it worked. But another time biked tipped over again and my legs were tired that day from a leg workout earlier. I couldn’t execute the ‘traditional’ way. I actually did a similar pose like this new trick you shown because of my desperation to get the bike up. But now that you demonstrated the correct way to do this I am very glad and grateful you made this video! I hope I can practice with you one of these days. I love the pay it forward thinking you promote. I’m subscribed now and please keep the videos coming! More power to you and your channel
