A friend called and asked if I wanted a Mustang, I said no but send me the listing... and now I own this 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra Convertible. The 1995 Cobra is relatively rare making it 1 of 1003 produced, but this one was much more special, it was one of the 499 factory hardtop cars. Ryan took the top to use on his Cobra and left us with this dirt cheap yet very fun old SN95 Mustang.

Yeah really needed for the terrible stock LCA's (the V8 bushings were like twice the size of the V6 bushings and had tons of slop). A good set of aftermarket arms usually resulted in dumping the quad shocks.

Hey JR, you're kinda close with your Genie. It's a GS200, and I think those are late 60s-early 70s. The screws you pointed out are actually the force adjustment to reverse the door if it hits something whole closing or stop it if the door hits something opening. There are little pegs attached to the chain that hit the white plastic lever to stop the opener when it reaches the open and closed positions, and there should be a red one to show where to line up the carriage if you have to open the door manually. (Pull down the T handle, and turn 90 degrees - it's basically just pinching the chain into the carriage.)

I have a 98 GT convertible. It has the 4.6 instead of your 5.0, but otherwise, nearly identical. What you have are they typical issues of a high mileage Mustang. Mine has just over 228,000. At one time or another I've addressed each of those issues. The low coolant is an issue with the overflow. You'll find that the rear windows is usually the door switch. The driver's seat is a chaffed wire under the carpet by the gas pedal. The steering rack mounts usually crack. The steering shaft end usually gets very sloppy. LSD diff. Usually needs rebuilt around 200k. The good news is that parts can be swapped up to 2004. So you can make cheap upgrades. I did all my ball joints and rod ends around 175k. 97 and later had struts up front. All of the parts are readily available from O'Reilly's or LMR. When you do the top, be careful of the sail cables that go down in the rear quarter area. If not, they can pull the window off the track. They're glued to the regulator, not bolted.

I had a 98 gt 5 speed when me and my wife met. I had a head gasket fail and the motor got super hot. I had just sold my house and moved in with my soon to be wife. So I had lots of extra cash laying around. Car got full blue printed bottom end with pi heads from a 99 4.6. A Ford racing cold air intake to a bbk 70 mm throttle body, bbk intake manifold, ford racing coils, Voodoo cams, bbk headers, bbk off road x pipe and two Flowmaster super 40 mufflers. Had a nice center force clutch and set of 4:10 gears in the back. Loved that car it sounded better than and new Coyote. Ownd it for 15 years. one day I got a wild hair up my butt and they had a portable dyno machine at this car show. I put my car on it and....289 hp and 320 lb feet at the wheels. 😢 all that work and it was stock 350 z fast. I sold the car to get the car i have now. The interior was starting to sn95 on me and i hate rattling. I have a 08 gt 5 speed now. All stock except a Whipple supercharger and corsa cat back exhaust. Some times I miss my 98 though it wasn't as fast and didn't have nearly as nice of a interior, my 08 is a premium and my 98 was cloth base interior.

Have you been to a used car lot recently? If you can get that Cobra all straightened out it will be worth a lot more than $6k. $6k won't buy a good used Corolla anymore. Your brain has yet to adjust to Bidenomics. Not only that, some people will flock to that car because it has OBD1 like the old Toyota pickup my Dad left me. OBD1 vehicles will not forsake you.

I think that that donut you thought wasn't the leak is at least one of the leaks. If you look, the flanges aren't parallel to one another. BTW, on my old 88 SSP LX 5.0, there was a pipe that ran behind the heads/valve covers and that pipe was connected to both of the headers and there was one pipe that had a weld that broke. I imagine you have it, too on this car. You might check that. It is a bitch to get to, I never fixed mine, but the exhaust leak always drove me nuts. Also, I mentioned in the first video that you need to check the heater box because of what was going on with your windshield on the drive home. I bet you have a leak. If you do, it's a PITA but should be easy for you, the entire dash has to come out to replace it. Mine went out in my Fox.

Dear John Ross, please do a Stroker build from the 302ci to a 347ci. I have done a couple of 5.0L to 5.6L conversions and even did one with a Paxton Supercharger. Not going to lie, it was AWESOME!!! Bring from Downunder, I put it in an AU 2001 XR8 Ford Falcon Ute. It wasn’t rip your face off fast but it could definitely boogie, (also at the time I was also Drag Racing with my brother, so we were kind of spoiled for choice) so I guess it was all about perspective. Anyway I digress. It was a huge Smile maker and ran constant 10’s. Hope this helps brother and keep up the great work.

By the way, the headlights on my 88 LX 5.0 had a bracket that clipped into the headlight lenses and had nuts that bolted them onto the car. I am sure that this one does, too because Ford used this kind of assembly for the headlight assemblies on a lot of Ford cars. Even if those headlight assemblies are not original which I think they may be, I believe that the Cobras had this style of headlight assembly with just the horizontal lines from the factory, they always keep their adjustment if you don't mess with the adjustment when moving the metal cradle from one assembly to another. It is strange that someone had to jam some sort of wipes around the headlights to keep them in adjustment. I'm thinking that either the headlight assemblies are original and the plastic inserts for the metal frame broke or someone replaced the headlight assemblies and screwed with the adjustment and this was their way to fix it. I know you'll be able to make it right, it really is a shame someone did that but considering the car has 200,000+ miles on it, I can't say I'm surprised. I will say though, cosmetically, that car is beautiful and there the are lots of great sources for quality Mustang parts available. I'm really happy you're saving this rare Cobra.

Great to see a car on the lift again, JR! Looks like this will be a fun project with great dividends for the work put in. Throw on some more power mods and she'll really wake up. :) Though my inner detailer is begging for a whole video just for powerwashing and undercoating so much stuff under the hood and underneath. xD Mustang folks, got a question for you all: I quickly compared this car's front end to some google images of '95 Cobras. Granted one of the headlights is jacked up, but was it always the case that the Cobra's headlights were noticeably taller than the turn signal housings? Or was that a common design thing with all trim levels of that vintage? (not trying to troll, just curious)

The interior has been changed in that car . All 1995' convertibles had saddle leather. "A limited run of 1,003 Cobra convertibles were manufactured this year, and of those only 499 had a hardtop. Though the hardtop is cool, it’s not easily removed, which kinda defeats the point of a convertible. Every Cobra convertible from 1995 has a saddle leather interior and is painted black, with a matching black convertible top. This is the easiest way to tell the 1995 Cobra convertible from the 1994 version, which only came in Rio Red with a Saddle colored roof. If you selected the Cobra Coupe instead you had the option of Crystal White, Black, or Rio Red, and the option of Black or Saddle interior which could come in either cloth or leather."

Air pump? Pretty sure thats a smog pump maybe? foxbodies had them and a pipe would run to the back of the heads. You can get a shorter belt to delete it and plug the head holes. Also, just buy an entire bushing poly kit and check the bushings on the rear control arms(and torque boxes while you are there). Any shocks and struts from 79 to 04 will work with a live axle from a mustang(01 cobra was IRS i think). 302's are known for oil leaks over time. Also, that rear extra shock is called a 'quad shock'. They came on fox gt's(not LX's) and sn95's and you dont have to run them if you dont want but they are cheap. .late model restoration is a good source for parts. They even remake some that are no longer in production.

Ok let me help with the repair list…item #1) Replace entire car…done 😂 Will make for some excellent content…at least it’s rare as you are going to spend 6k and have an SN95 that’s worth at least 5K when you are done. Thank goodness for RU-vid revenue to offset your costs. The undercarriage would be an excellent candidate for dry ice blasting…and you 100% need to yank the driveline, clean and reseal everything.

I picked up a 95 GT in similar condition last year. Just about every single mechanical item had to be replaced Speedo gear wiper stock, EGR valve, purge, solenoids, fuel pump, engine, gaskets clutch you name it. The car was completely rode hard and put away wet. it is now mechanically restored And has passed California smog so that says something. Lol. I think it would be better to remove the engine, drivetrain, clean paint, reseal and install properly given the condition of my mustang. I’m pretty sure half of that wiring is chewed up or messed up and needs major repair.

I don’t think the car is worth $3,000 with all the work that needs to be done. Plus convertibles tops are very expensive with all the hydraulic pumps. I’m thinking you will have to put about 5,000 dollars into the car. Plus all the time of taking the engine out to replace the rear main seals. You have your work cut out for you. Good luck

That engine will always leak! This is experience speaking on old, high mileage, fox bodies with the 302. Front main and rear main will always leak because of crank end play engaging the clutch is what exacerbates the leak. High mileage causes the main bearing in the middle of the engine to have play with the crank, which causes the leak in the front main and rear main. I have tried every sort of sleeve for front and rear and different types of seals. PTFE Teflon rubber nothing works. You need new crank bearings. My advice is don’t even change the seals. They will leak within a couple of hundred miles. The solution is a full rebuild with new bearings .

those diagonal shocks in the back are called quad shocks, and yes they're designed to counter axle tramp. If you go to a very high quality lower control arm, like a Maximum motorsports LCA, they say you can just delete the quad shocks, a lot of guys do just to get clearance for wider rear tires too.

lol, on that “clean carfax.” 197k miles on my 94. I’ve had the car since 1998. Since owning it, it has been in two front end collisions, and one rear quarter collision. For funsies, I ran a carfax on it. Squeaky clean. Know why? First wreck was in 98, second in 03. In 2008, it was liability only, so we never reported it to insurance. I had a totaled out 1988 BMW with a twisted frame, and front end held together by only a crossmember and aftermarket shock tower brace… …clean Carfax. If the wreck was never reported to insurance or happened in the before times, there’s no record of it happening.

When you fix the battery cables, using crimp-on terminals is probably the worst choice ever. Cut new cables to fit (and use the proper colors, red and black), solder/heat shrink a lug onto each end, and use MilSpec terminals that allow you to just bolt the lugs onto the terminal. Trust me, you do NOT want to be chasing down electrical issues on top of everything else. I would also replace any ground straps (block to frame) with actual 4-gauge cable, also with soldered/heat shrunk lugs.

Those smart washers blow fuses all the time. It is a good indication that there is too much sludge in the bottom, and the microbes need time to break everything down, or if it is dirt/sand clean it out. The good thing is they are very modular and have replacement parts for everything. I used to services about 30 of these on a weekly basis as a service rep for a company that had the biggest service fleet of these in the world. They are very good machines with a tiny bit of care, and way less grease/oil to deal with, and way better for the environment.

Sounds like the engine is coming out and with your shop and I'm sure, people, that would be the best thing for That 200k car. It would be a massive confidence builder rather than Band-aiding it. Complete exhaust system out and back in. While it's out, remove all the smog stuff. All new coolant system would be good too. Super clean everything under the car and engine compartment. With $3000 into it to start, it would still be a good deal. Oh and, you need some pads of paper. Cardboard To Do Lists in that shop?

I am actually glad you got a car in this condition. This is the type of cars I am seeing locally.

This car needs some serious tlc. It may eventually need a new engine. JR is making a list and checking it twice. The undercarriage needs rustproofing for sure.

I seem to recall that barb-less wire is am item they produce. Farmers & ranchers would be used to working with barbed wire, this wire acts very similar when stringing it on fence lines.

Since it's a Cobra I would pull out engine n transmission! With all that leakage going on it would be easier and faster to seal everything up.

For heavens sake, put some decent suspension components on your Cobra. It is a great base to start from. Global West or Cortex has fantastic parts for Mustangs.

Shocks and struts for sure at 200K Might as well do bushings while you are in there. And sway bar connectors.

IF you put $5000 parts and labor, you might be able to sell it for $2500. ALWAYS look at the 'exit'.. how much can you get for the car at the end...

Ahhh last year of the 5.0L pushrod engine, brings back memories growing up in the 90's, seeing these roam around NorCal. Good project car, lots of options.

Oh, and dropping the front subframe is easier than you think. It's the easiest way to pull the engine. And the only way to pull the trans and engine together.
