Here's How Bad The Homeless Problem In Los Angeles Is

The worst homeless region in downtown Los Angeles.
In this video, I’m going to head into downtown Los Angeles to get a glimpse of the exploding homeless problem that’s taking over California’s largest city. Due to political decisions, the number of homeless people has grown tremendously, and I had not witnessed it. With downtown LA still two miles in the background, I got a preview of the mess I would see when I arrived into the hub of the mess. The sides of the roads were strewn with trash, mattresses and likely, even feces. The day was Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at high noon.
Just on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles are open air markets, many of them catering to the hispanic population. You can buy everything from pinatas to knock off blankets and t shirts to produce in these markets. There were also many open air, and possibly unauthorized food stands on both sides of the road. Odds are the tacos are tremendous, although, potentially dangerous due to probable health code violations.
It may seem like the homeless issue in many cities in the US has grown by quite a bit, but that’s only in major cities. Overall, the number of homeless people in our nation has ticked down - by about 14% in the last ten years.
However, in Los Angeles, it’s risen by 75% in the last six years, and now, there are an estimated 36,000 homeless people here. Part of that is because of the warm weather. Part of that is California politicians pandering to the homeless. Of course, drugs and addictions are a big part of it. And for many homeless in California, it’s a lifestyle.
Many also blame the LA homeless problem on the high cost of living, though most of those pushed out of their homes live in their vehicles or in motel rooms
Los Angeles ranks 4th in the world for its homeless population. Mumbai, India has 60,000 people, and Manilla in the Philippines has 70,000.
All of the areas I’m going to drive through are all in downtown proper, and are just a small example of the homeless encampments that exist not only in downtown proper, but in this city and county.
Many of the homeless were inside their tents or tarps. You could hear faint yelling and arguing going on behind their thin walls. Some wandered aimlessly. Others pushed shopping carts or baby strollers around with trash or recyclables inside. Some just laid down on the sidewalks without even a blanket. Others laid in the gutters as if they didn’t have any dignity or hope.
As I drove through the homeless areas, many people yelled at me for filming them. Some would get upset for being on camera, and then straight away, forget what they were upset about. Many wonder the streets. You can smell feces in the air. You can hear propane heaters running on every block, behind the large tarps that look like they are there permanently.
Los Angeles, like the rest of the west coast, has a big problem on its hands. While some people are temporarily homeless due to a life changing event, for the people on the streets of big cities like this, it’s a chronic issue. Its a very complicated problem. And with that comes a very complicated solution.

I used to work at Beverly Hills. Sadly to say they are there too and no actions taken. Most of the homeless people get on the bus and go to Santa Monica/Beverly hills. I've seen a few there compared to any parts in this video but the few homeless people in Beverly hills seemed to be fucking crazy and creepy One time I was waiting for the bus in Beverly hills and this homeless dude kept trying to go behind me and he kept looking at me too I knew what he wanted to do. When I got on the bus he went in there too he wanted to sit next to me but if he did I would just move Haha fuckin weird man

I am. All 50 states have a homeless problem. I am from Tennessee, It's here also, and it's all because of the rent is so high, the electric and all of the utilities are out radious in every city across America. People who draw a check from the government cannot pay rent because they only get about $790.00 a month. Either live with someone or go homeless, no. way around it. Then they will not give out section8 Government Housing, a waiting lottery and if they have a police record. They are out period of help. It is awful because people can change and do better but what do they do if a place is not left to them. Go Homeless . It's the new normal til the government changes it. I pray that I don't haft to live that way and been blessed. But we will never know it till it happens to us..

Theres reportedly 41290 homeless in la, 28862 unsheltered. $1b = $34659 per unsheltered homeless person in la. That could go torward putting that unsheltered homeless person in a transitional tiny home village with a shared bathroom and kitchen. They would get to live in a tiny home bedroom with heating and cooling and electricity, but the village would share a bathroom and kitchen. They could use some land to grow their own food in the village, and they should be helped getting a job and if needed job training. $2b would provide $69318 per unsheltered homeless person in la. That could be used to go torward putting them in a transitional tiny home that includes a bathroom and kitchen per tiny home. Convince gov to let everyone use an acre of free tax free fertile land to grow a food forest on and live on. End farm subsidies. End tax breaks to farms exsept those who grow healthy vegan food for human consumption exsept no large mono crops. End mandatory school, ged and hsd requirements, age limits, minimum wage, and exsessive regs. People should be able to learn how to do a good job they want so they can afford a house and car before 18. For those who and whos parents cant afford it, chairty (where the donar gets a full non refundable tax credit that carrys over for an unlimited number of years) and or the about 180,000dollars spent on k thru 12 per student could pay for it and trash k thru 12 and some of that money could be used to promote more independence and healthy living

All 3 comments here are correct. There will always be homeless people, but a great many of them could be helped, through special programs, job placements, and housing [ to a degree], but funding for programs, are not in the “cards”. Politicians are more wanting “control” over people [ usually by giving them “ tokens “( often for votes), than really trying to help. True, the problem is complex, but most of the politicians in cities and states like this, reall don’t care. And higher taxes, punishing those who do make it out of poverty, and “punishing programs that really do try to help, [ usually by very stiff regulations- and totally unnecessary “red-tape “].

I traveled to Los Angeles back in 2015 to visit a friend. It was my first time to ever see California. Back then, I only saw a few tents here and there, it wasn't very bad at the time and I thought it was a very nice big city. We had a lot of fun and did a lot of things over that long weekend. Then I flew back to Dallas where I'm from. Now, Dallas has homeless people too, but the weather here keeps it to a minimum (way too hot in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter, not much nice weather in between). Also the city of Dallas is pretty good at "re-landscaping" areas under bridges with giant sharp-edged boulders to keep bums from pitching tents there.

When I was visiting California some 30 odd years ago I asked the friends I was staying with if we could go check out the CBD, (downtown L.A). Their reply was, "Don't bother, not worth it. It's full of drug addicts and homeless people !" Go figure! All big city problems shine a magnifying glass on humanities problems. To allow the problem to grow this big reekes of entrenched corruption. If I was elected to high office in California, the very first thing I would do would be to sack the public service en masse. Then start rehiring. In a very short time the results would be stunning.

I make another $450 a month donating plasma & sometimes other cash labor. Even a used car or van is shelter. Even if I had to sleep in the streets it would only be temporary because I’d save enough money in the bank until I could buy a used vehicle. 20 years Army & I’ve slept on the ground, in tents, helicopters & tanks too, no biggie. Helping them would be cheaper, than the EMT and fire departments churning them through police stations, hospitals, and mental health centers like a revolving door. Many commit petty crimes with hopes a safe bed, a meal, and medical. A homeless person costs the taxpayers alot more on the street than offering them services. I think it’s many American cities, but the ones in California do seem particularly bad. Even small cities like Denver and Cincinnati have a lot of homelessness smack in downtown. Here in Chicago we have our fair share, but the city that gets such a bad rep in this country, is actually a lot cleaner and has less examples of tent homelessness than a lot of other cities I’ve been too. We have some homeless people in corners with signs downtown, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tent.. let alone multiple or entire streets. If you go to the neighborhoods, you can sometimes see tents or people who set up camp at a bus station... but again, not nearly anything like the above cities or LA.

I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live. I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck. So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible. I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade. I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration. Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .

I was homeless at one point and time. It was my husband, myself, and my dog. We were all living in one car along with all of our backpacks and things we had. But my homelessness wasn't because of drugs, or that I had gotten evicted. Although, with absolutely $0 in our pockets, deciding to leave all the stress away at home, we traveled in a car across the US during a pandemic. I have to say the trip definitely wasn't easy. Being on the streets you'd have to deal with a variety of obstacles: finding changes of clothes, CLEAN socks were such an issue and sometimes you'd have to resort to stealing food... Altogether with not being able to shower up until you panhandled for enough money to get a night's stay at a cheap motel.. It was hard to keep up hygiene, and I myself like to keep very clean when I can. Luckily we weren't without a car, so we were mobile fortunately safer with the whip than out on the street. But having to sleep in a car brought along a whole other set of issues- police, nosy people, and crackheads all at once, so my advice to anyone sleeping in their car right now - park and rides are your best friend. Don't stay at Walmart parking lots. You could either get kicked out or encounter people trying to rob you. Also, try to always carry around pepper spray with you just in case. I remember my husband ended up finding a job up in Sacramento, CA at a restaurant. The employer was so understanding about the situation, but get ready for a rough patch of 2 weeks. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep the job. But to all employers - give the homeless a chance. And to all people who might encounter someone asking for spare change - Don't be afraid to give. It could really help someone out, and in most cases that money isn't going directly to drugs or alcohol if its someone who actually wants the help. I am now writing this in my own house with my husband and dog. I have never felt more proud to have my own little spot. But I never forget all those people who helped me get through living in my car. I hope if you are reading this and you are considered homeless, remember to stay strong and don't give in. God bless whoever is reading this, stay safe!

Most of the things you touched upon were why L.A has such a large homeless population. If you were homeless you would certainly not want to live on the streets of New York, or Chicago, and even the lowest cost housing is out of reach for many in L.A., but I am sure there are many abandoned warehouses in the city that they could open up to the homeless. I think homeless people will always be attracted to warmer climates for survivability. I live in San Diego where I also read about and see many homeless people, but I think the city is taking better care of them than L.A.
