A slightly more casual approach to today’s video! Due to the current lockdown in the UK, I’m highly restricted with the content I can make. Either way, we will make do! Stay safe & enjoy 🙏🏻
Wtf that can't be right you live In the hood? I had a fiesta st when I was 22 brand new £495 doesn't go any lower I'm 31 now with a mk8 golf gti paying 560
I really enjoy these real world figures about car ownership, More like this please 👍 Ps. Don't explain private info like how you can afford it, It's none of the haters business!
30mpg is brilliant given its performance and being a 3 litre. My fl RS3 long term is 23mpg, however well aware it’s dependent upon how you drive, traffic etc. I genuinely thought your 140 would have been thirstier than your R, clearly not. Good vid 👏
The Golf R (along with the S3) are disproportionately expensive because they're the most stolen cars in the UK. Even in this day in age people are jacking cars!
Any fast compact 4 door (RS3) is a prime candidate as they're predominantly used as getaway vehicles rather than being stolen to order abroad with cars like Land Rovers & X5's
I'm 36, 1 years no claims, and my annual premium is only £920. It was costing me £149 a month last year but it is what it is is. If you have to think about the running costs don't buy 1, every car cost to run some slightly more than others. On that note if you put your foot down you're looking at 1.7 MPG
The more realistic MPG for the 140i in town is 18/20 mpg. Motorway you will get 37/42 mpg no problem. I can’t see you having 29mpg on average if you drive it hard like you say you do. It’s virtually impossible. I’ve had mine for nearly 2 years and there is no way. A lot of 140 owners would agree. Car looks good though
PeeCarNoo 100% agree. I have a 240i and average 22mpg. Currently averaging 18mpg as I’m driving it harder. For a full tank of v power (roughly £70 from empty) I get on average 200 -220 miles from the tank.
Good review. I can confirm the costs for service and spare parts - same in Germany. But you forgot the number one cost factor: finance rates, depreciation etc -> If you keep your car only 2-3 years you‘ll most likely see 4.000€ per year in loss of value
I have a 125d msport and I would recommend changing the oil every 9k miles. Secondly forget main dealers for services, take it to an independent specialist. Better all round.
I hope you change your oil more frequently than 18,000 miles!!! thats a good way to increase wear on an engine leaving the oil in there that long! longest you should leave oil in a car is 10,000 miles or a year. especially for a performance car.
@R A you clearly know nothing about the motortrade it would not void any warranty at all.. you dont have to take the car to main dealer at all.. as long as OE filter or warranty approved filters are used with the correct oil it will NOT void warranty!!!!
@R A I'm also in the motortrade I work for one of the largest suppliers in the UK not euros.. been at main dealers for 10 years plus.. it does not void your warranty if you been in the trade that long you should know but clearly you do not.. You do know BMW Mercedes dont make their own filter right it Mann Bosch Mahle Wix Cooper Fram etc etc. You are a typical guy who works for dealership that thinks all after market parts are shit and avoids your warranty.. why dont you get the correct information and come back to talk to me.
@R A Unfortunately you are wrong I have a VW Golf R so that's wrong.. I'm also a branch manager of a motorfactors. I've worked through parts at main dealer from Peugeot apprentice of the year 3 years on the bounce to now running one of the most profitable business with my company.. So Billy fucking big chips who thinks he a upper class wank because he deals with exotics car wow well done.. You still have no clue and if you wish I can send you all documentation on warranty approved parts I see because Unfortunately for me I have to deal with morans like you sometimes the rest are well educated on after market parts. Also if you read my first comment I said about a specialist garage can use main dealer parts but still save you money.. Go fuck your self keyboard warrior and go wank yourself silly over you exotics!!
R A - Fitted aftermarket discs to my car as i found the genuine ones warp when abused, the car needed a wheel bearing after 38K, BMW did it under warranty, no complaints, no warranty voided :P
I’m 30 next year with 7 years no claims and I’ve been quoted £2,300 annually for this car, fully comp, I live in an area which is in the top 3 most expensive places to insure in the UK. Absolutely ridiculous prices🤬
3 year service plan on my Golf R mk 7.5 is £420 for 3 years with its first MOT! And my Insurance is £350 a year....Bridgestone tyres £80 each...... after hearing your costs I think I will stick with the R till new one comes out........
people bang on about MPG lol i spent 7.5k in just over a year on fuel for a 1.2 corsa. yes i drove flat out and would sit at around 90 on the mway so any of these cars would be the same.
Good to know, thanks! Re Insurance, you're lucky you don't live in London. Even as an older driver with 9 years NCB I was quoted £3k by my broker for an M140i (Compared to £700 for my existing 330d) Then through APlan via BMW Car Club it reduced to £840 so check them out.
Few things to add Do not use bmw dealer for any work other than warranty or recall, resell value wont be affected much or at all and you'll save more money doing it elsewhere than doing it through bmw hoping for higher resell value Engine Oil Use your local garage to do the oil that is either bmw approved or work with bmw's, cheaper and 90% sure they are more skilled than apprentice at bmw Buy your oil from places like opieoils, I use millers(£70/£80 for 6.5L) and bmw oem oil filter(£15), then use my local garage that charge £60 for oil change, youre looking at £155 so you're saving £150 with every service but...I wouldnt change my oil every 18k miles, for this engine and its performance 18k miles, specially from new is stupid, 7.5k/10k miles(if your car is on PCP or lease do not care) Brakes You can use Bosch or Brembo oem discs that are £120 each(£240 for front axle) or little bit cheaper and better imo Mtec brake discs, standard or high carbon, around £200 for set of two and Pads are quite cheap, I recommend set of ds2500, far better than stock at £140 for front axle, and labour should be around £60-£100, altogether £480 with most expensive parts, you're yet again saving, around £100 And for the rear, brake discs from brembo and bosch are around £90-£110 each so £180-£220 for rear axle, brake pads are around same price of £140, labour if you're changing all 4 brakes then it will be £100 if rear or front only then £60, altogether front and rear you're looking at £840 so you're saving nearly £300 👀 Tyres Unfortunately, there are few ways to save few pounds but no a lot, you can buy tyres from seller on ebay that sell them little cheaper and are legitimate sellers or ebay, you could also buy part worn PS4 or even better goodyear eagle F1 supersport(they're not runflats) for 18s and F1's or PS4S for 19s So, to sum it up, you cant win with insurance, petrol or tax but you can with few other bits If you were to change your engine oil and brakes yearly, you're saving about £450, if you drive like Luke and get 300 miles per tank, you can do about 2200 miles with that £450...not bad I'd say
I don't do the work on mine either. Playing mechanic after a day at work or on days off isn't the first thing on my radar. If Id seen this before I got it, it could have put me off... I'm bloody pleased I didn't, it's averaging 25.6Mpg since buying it 7 months ago but I love it. If you don't like the running costs get a dirty diesel
Great video!!! Those costs are not that bad considering its a service every 2 years not 1. And considering discs and pads on other sports can be way more than £550. £750 every 4 years or 36k miles is not astronomical really. And could get all of this cheaper at a good independent. And when your 42 like me your insurance will be under £500 like mine is 😚
BMW May recommend oil change every 18k miles however if you do do that you run an increased risk of snapping your timing chain. Just saying, most BMW owners get their oil changed at 10k miles. Enjoy.
Enjoying the vids! The premium road tax is £300 on top of the normal tax and it's only for the first 5 years , So £145 + £300 if you have one over 40k. For 600 quid tyres wise I would imagine you can get pilot sport 4s not just the ones it comes with. I've seen people pick up sets for £440 for super sports,. Servicing is really expensive but many have a service pack on them which covers them to the end of the PCP then BMW will have to service it anyway if you chuck it back at them :P
I just got myself 125i because I'm cheap and I hate to pay so much for fuel, insurance, rego and maintenance. Rather have that in my bank account. PS brakes are expensive because they're expensive brakes - large discs, better materials, pads that are sport orientated rather than what you get in your Camry. You certainly can do better in the DIY route or even indy
I've never serviced at main dealer because they are a rip-off and be honest on resale it doesn't affect that much as long as some history with invoice and stamped you still end up saving money
Great video man! Been waiting for a video like this for a while. You might have finally convinced me to trade in my 320d for one 😬😂 Also FYI BMW do discounts on their services fairly often when you book them online, especially around Black Friday. Makes the cost of owning one just slightly less painful.
If you wanna have a good, strong engine you change oil at 6-7k miles as it says in the book which is provided when you buy the car. The Mann oil, air and fuel filter which are one of the bests cost you altogether 50 pound for the car, around 100 for oil and then 50-70 to get it changed in a good service. Everything you say is overpriced.
On the other end of the spectrum a 116d EfficientDynamics is £0 to tax, £600 to insure (26 y/o), £300 to £400 for a full service with a local garage, tyres are £65 each (205/55 R16 Michelin Primacy), not had the brakes done yet but it's not going to be as much as your quote!
That insurance is actually ridiculous!! I’ve had a 118d m sport for past 3 years n my insurance over the years has been 3.1k, 2.5k and now 1.4k and I have a 3 years NCB too.. did a quote on a 140i it was 14k!!!
I am 30 y/o, over 10 years no claims, quote for the new shape M135i, £1500, couldn’t believe it considering that was with no mods for a 4 wheel drive 2 litre. Not appy!
Coming back to this video as I’m looking to get one of these… insurance is nearly 3 grand! With everything to make it as “cheap” as possible. Bloody unreal what’s happened 🤣🤣
Well done Luke good video again, nice and informative. Real world costs. You can get M135i’s pretty cheap now and this should make people make a better decision whether the ownership will be doable.
I reset my MPG for a whole day and got 23mpg at best. That was quite alot of dual carriageway driving aswell. No idea how anyone gets 30mpg. For me its normally about 18-19
Insurance for me decked out on a 340i was under £800 but I'm mid 30s. Tyres ps4 you can get on 18" wheels and are much better than super sport in the wet similar in the dry. 19" on the 340i ps4s were 150 each at the back but 180 for front weirdly. Services are the same (rip off) and brakes the discs should last 2 sets of pads so first time need replacing should be cheaper. On mpg if your on longer runs when you need to be economical mid 40s is achievable but realistically nobody drives like that all the time. Overall though my 340i hasn't cost me as much as I was expecting edit: yet touch wood!
I don’t know if it’s a well known thing but I can unequivocally say the vw blue motion “eco” engines when driven “ enthusiastically “ drink fuel like a stag party at last orders 🤣 I fill up £45-£55 every week in a 1.2 polo tsi blue motion and that’s only around 150-160 miles a week
You might be getting ripped off with your tires. Mines are 18" Michelin, costing in at £160 per set front and rear, though Toyota give me replacement tires [FREE] when I need them replaced which I've had to do a few times, Don't ask why.
funny thing, im 21 had my license 2 and a half years now so 2 years ncb, and i dream of only 2 cars m140i and an e92 m3. m140i is 4k to insure and the m3 is 2k to insure??? wish the m140i would cost me 1.7k so i might just settle for my m3
People dont understand how the BMW 6 cylinder are good on fuel. My old m4 was getting same economy as 435i. Yet the cla45 I had was far worse on fuel! I'll go on a limb here and say that thusc140i is better on fuel than a45s. So this smaller engine is more green isnt always truly. Also the c63s wasnt terrible. Not as good as m4 but still not what you might think. Most economical car I ever had was 2010 ibiza cupra. Great cars those
Think it's a lot to do with the gearbox and mapping of the engine. If I leave my 140 in auto it sit in 8th gear at about 40 mph and is barely above idle they are really good engines as I'm sure your aware.
Bmw have a history of great engineering producing performance cars that if driven conservatively will do great mpg. Especially the 6 cylinders. I could get 40 mpg on a run with our M235. I Can't quite say the same about the M2 competition though😂
Between the BMW and golf R which one was most expensive to run and wen coming to the modes you had on both cars which vechicle's mods can you say was most expensive and we know you had some big mods on both the golf R with the exhaust system and BMW with the slip diff
Insurance has came down a lot then as I drove a Nissan micra when I was 20-21 and it was a 4year old and it cost me £2600 to insure that was the cheapest and the car only cost me £2400. I was driving an old ford escort for nearly 3 years before I changed to the micra with no accidents but the most I was quoted was £5700 for insurance for a 1.0 Nissan micra 🙈🙈
Thank you for the advice 🙏🏼 considering you looked at an A45 and the M140i before you bought this, what would you recommend for me to buy between the two of them considering I am a student that will use the car as a daily driver?
1700 a year?! I've got a 116i cost me 2.6k!??! Tbh I did only past my test in September last year and I did end up changing insurance to get rid of the black box lol 🤪
Love the general video style but some of your figures are waaaaay off, obviously insurance is personal so I can't comment on that, but in terms of other costs, If you ring and speak to the service manager they will always cut you a deal; Minor (Oil and filter) £170 - Main dealer (Haggled) Major inc BF change £490 - Main dealer (Haggled) Pads and sensors all-round - £310 (Paid for parts from a main dealer, fitted by an indi) Tires (Michelin PS super sport) £112 a corner, front or rear from Costco! Also generally I find doing motorway miles 40MPG plus is easily achievable, tank to tank record for me is 404 miles (6 speed manual) So don't be put off thinking its a full-fat M Car service costs, it's really really not! I budget about 25% more than I did for my MK7 ST-3 and I'm not far off :) Keep up the good videos but I'd definitely encourage you to shop around a little and don't let people rip you off! :)
Thanks for this, gave me some clarity and a different approach when considering getting one myself. I definitely haggle and if your also achieving that mpg then I’m all in 👍
£3K to insure! I have a 2L audi , stage 1 APR and it costs me £150/yr to insure. Why are people pouring money down the drain just to have the latest, the newest, the fastest...... .Spend your money on non depreciating assets like property
Seeing this video 3 years since I had my M135i LCI, your insurance was shocking. I paid £550 and I was 40 years old then. I would never buy this car if it was £1700
