There are many hidden costs with used BMWs! So although they look cheap, they might not be cheap for you if you're looking at buying a used BMW. There are reasons they are cheap, including depreciation, maintenance costs, ownership costs, and just BMW problems that will hit you.
So if you're looking at a used BMW and considering buying that used BMW, then you'll want to understand why the price is much lower than you'd expect.

To be fair… this video sums up any luxury vehicle brand. If a car costs 100k to buy new, then its a 100k car that needs 100k type of servicing. Just because you paid 10k, doesn’t make it a 10k car. It’s still a 100k car.

Usually it's not the cost of the parts that is prohibitive, it's the cost of labor. When the warranty runs out, find a reputable independent BWM repair shop (I found one that was started by former service technicians from a local BMW dealership, so they're all certified, etc.). They were much less expensive on the labor + they don't nickle-and-dime on every little thing.

I used to work at a used car dealership in Los Angeles. Used BMWs and Mercedez were usually purchased by people with bad credit. Many of them were repoed because whoever bought it could keep up with car payments when the expensive repair bill came up. We had a 2003 (I think) 7 Series BMW that we sold for about 5k and the dealer made almost 18k profit on it because it got repoed so many times and sold again.

I have also noticed that some just look at the price tag of a bmw, Mercedes etc and think “I can buy it”, but fails to count in the high maintenance costs that u have to pay in order to keep them work and be reliable. So when they realize it, they often cheap out and buy 3th party parts and then when they fail they blame the car, and then they sell it, and the next buyer will buy it and the loop continues. If u take care of the car as scheduled and keep up with the maintenance they wont break down as much.

My last BMW was great during the warranty period, then the cash drain began. By the time I had 150,000 miles on it I had already spent nearly 40% of the acquisition cost in repairs. I am sure it would have continued to skyrocket. I sold it with about 151,000 miles on it. No one turned a wench on it but BMW, all repairs documented, garage kept and I got back 5% of what I had paid for it new, yep, 95% depreciation. That was my last BMW, never again.

A lot of people lease these cars with crazy monthly payments thinking they can afford it but reality hits when they don’t even have money to put gas in it. I know a few people like that. Some leased brand new with the monthly payment and insurance taking up half their salary. Others bought used bmw’s with their life savings and don’t even put full coverage insurance on it cause “save a few bucks,nothing will happen” mentality. Flood happens or they get hit by a non insured driver or the car keeps breaking but they can’t keep up cause they don’t have any savings…. A lot of people fake it till they make it but most don’t make it and end up losing a lot of everything over a car.

Those are not computers but a Module. The cars run on a Local area network called CAN. Those modules are network nodes assigned to carry out your commands. My wife got a used X2 and we were at the dealership waiting for them to detail it, etc. So we were sitting in the service waiting area and another customer was sitting within earshot. His service rep came over with a clipboard talking about an oil change costing like $500 U.S. but since it was an older model it qualified for a legacy discount that cut the price in half. The customer was so excited to pay $250+ for an oil change. I went home and found the procedure and got the low profile oil filter wrench, new filter element and some Castrol European spec 5W-30 and I'm all in for under $50. Edit: We also got the extended service contract for repairs.

He is a very knowledgeable Mercedes guy and had sources for the hydraulic cylinders that were rebuilt with a better grade of seal. This illustrates what many people here are saying. My friend's car sold new for almost $130,000 and he now owns a final example for less than $20,000 and some hard work. This path is clearly not for everybody.

I have run flat tires on my 330e. A used car dealer told me most people replace those tires with regular ones. After thinking for less than 2 min I decided that is really dumb. Not only would I get very little for my tires I would have to buy 5 new tires (about $500 these days), buy a used rim-$100, buy a jack-$50 or more, then pay to replace them. My tires do ride a little rough, but I can rarely imagine being over 50 mi from where one can get a tire fixed. I actually have one of those tire inflator things also.

I wouldn’t want one more than two years old. Think how horrible on the environment it is to make a car that essentially is only reliable /economical for two years and then becomes useless. The manufacturer doesn’t focus on long term reliability they focus on initial sales only. Also had a VW Jetta that was one problem after the other till I finally gave it away. Generally speaking if you are handy with cars, especially German luxury cars, BMW is a very good car because you do all the maintenance and small fixer uppers yourself. Or if you know a good mechanic that can do it and won't charge you an arm or a leg. One thing I did notice is that BMW no longer allows you to do multiple oil changes in a year, which for this car it definitely needs especially for higher mileage BMW vehicles. I own a small plastic manufacturing company (injection molding). The problem with plastic is that the molecular bonds tend weaken with thermal cycling. The molecular bonds in plastic, unlike metals, are not that strong to begin with. Thats why most plastic cracks in time. For example, I have an inexpensive car (Chevy Aveo) that I discovered has a plastic thermostat housing. I'm like, how stupid. Sure enough, I discovered that it had been replaced by the previous owner. If you have a turbo that's generating excessive heat under the hood, good night! I saw my mechanic working on a car with a plastic valve cover. I couldn't believe it. The internal stresses in certain areas of that part via high pressure injection molding makes that a foolish choice-weigh be damned. It will fail prematurely. Trust me.

From friends that have owned BMW's over the years, I can tell you that just your run of the mill maintenance is pretty much the equivalent of "major repairs" compared to other cars. People just get the estimates on things such as a brake job, and they run for the hills. The ridiculous prices of the parts compared to other cars are just part of it - the labor tends to come in pretty high as well. A VP at a company I worked for years ago bought a BMW 3 series - traded it in within 2 years when she got the estimate for the brake job she needed to have done. Within a week, she traded it in for a loaded Honda Accord. Not sure why she didn't go with an Acura (she could have certainly afforded the step up to Honda's luxury brand), but hey - maybe they jack up the prices of their parts just like the other brands they compete with, lol.

EDIT: I’d also point out, no one cares what Canada thinks about going electric, if California pushes back their electrification goals…and they probably will, does anyone really think Canada will be dictating anything to auto manufacturers? Nope. If California pushes electrification back another ten years so will Canada.

You’re incorrect. In Canada the cars will be banned. Who will buy your car privately? No one will want them and the government will roll out incentives to force people to buy electric. Gas prices are so high you’d be stupid not to buy an electric car. It’s like CD players, or cassette players or a Motorola flip phone - you can only use them for a certain time until they are useless to everyone
@TheLumberJacked
@TheLumberJacked 11 месяцев назад
@@Lifeisapartydresslikeit I’m sorry, I am correct. The used ICE market will be alive for years to come. They won’t ban ICE just the sale of new ones (or that’s the idea) imagine thinking everyone will switch to electric in 12 years, with rising costs of living, a lack of infrastructure and growing wealth disparity, do you really see a product that has less than 1% market penetration in the world achieving 100% market saturation in 12 years? Where your vehicle spending budget dictates how far you can go? Few people can afford the this electric future, even fewer will want to be stuck with used EV’a with worn batteries…a world where your financial status dictates how far you can drive or short range precludes once easy to accomplish drives into natural areas with no chargers. Gas is flexible, not going anywhere, despite your magical thinking and it will be desirable because the vast majority of people in our country simple can’t afford go along with Rich Liberal, ideologically driven market manipulation like has been accomplished by picking electric as the default green technology. I won’t even talk about the inevitable reveal that electric will prove to be worse for the environment and transportation like trucking, bussing and other commercial ventures simply can’t adopt EV commercial vehicles because charging even a small fleet requires vastly more energy to charge than the factory that makes them even uses. People are at the moment blind to reality and unaware of the soon to be escalating costs of this nightmare as more and more manufacturers need more and more of resources there is less and less of every day. Electricity costs are already getting high and grid capacities are no where near what is required to make this work…especially in places like California. Look, right now, electric cars are a fiery-tale and an interesting topic of discussion as no one is forced to buy them, but when it gets to that point, the people who vote will take issues with policies like this that do nothing to address global warming since the vast majority of all transportation pollution is from the commercial sector which has no way of using electric trucks for long haul. This is a misinformed pipedream right now and it’s held aloft by policies that require ME to open my pocket book. This isn’t how you make good policy. A necessity do life shouldn’t be paywalled and electric cars will do that. So if you really think cheap ICE vehicles won’t be sucked up ultra fast from the market and reused again and again to help the majority of the population avoid having to pay the big bucks to get only similar range performance EV’s compared to their existing cars….then maybe you need to spend 10min thinking this through. The government can’t make anyone buy anything, nor take away what is already made. Voters, should they ever wake up may realize this rich liberal pipedream is in fact not going to help them and their old car is not, in fact, going to end the planet. Wait and see what happens. With how things are getting more expensive, you can bet real money that this will not go smoothly especially when the US is on the precipice of fiscal disaster.

Walmart has done oil service on my last six vehicles, synthetic $60, without issue. Never once pushed a belt or an air filter. They have protocols and follow them. It’s loaded with technology, has high performance capabilities and is not linked to a larger car company which means parts are not mass produced. Lastly the sales numbers indicate that people love their BMWs. No one who can afford to buy a BMW is driving a Lexus. No one under age 60.

BMW is for the person poor at math or just doesn't care.

@@DerKirchenhocker Meaning the people who can afford not to care about a car they will trade in every 3 years. BMW reliability is only an issue for poor people who have to keep a car for a long period.

I'd say about 10 years or 100k KM which ever comes first. BMW is notorious for engine/turbo fluid leaks after 10 years or 120k KM. Unless the driver drives it like a race car then 6-7 years can be achieved.
