"In the years before Hurricane Helene ravaged North Carolina last week, the state’s Republican lawmakers and corporate interests continually fought climate adaptation and mitigation measures that could have helped communities withstand the storm’s tidal surge, hurricane-force winds, and widespread flooding.
While North Carolina was once a national leader in renewable energy and climate change resiliency policies, that changed in the early 2010s when Republicans secured control of both chambers of the state’s legislature and a former utility company executive moved into the governor’s mansion. Since then, GOP politicians and their big-business allies have sabotaged climate resiliency projects, delayed plans to embrace renewable energy, and stonewalled efforts to prepare the state for stronger storms and a rising sea."

States that choose not to enact policies related to climate change should not be able to obtain taxpayer money from states who support those policies. Lets vote on it.

Thinking like this leads to destruction of coastal ports, which lead to continental bankruptcy. You think shutting down a section of the baltimore port was bad? What do you think happens when 8 of the 10 largest energy terminals in the US are out of commission.... And 4 of the 5 largest ports by total trade are in Louisiana and Texas.

@@cherylgish if the policies actually made logical sense in the real world and were proven to actually make people's lives better then why would anybody reject these policies? Let's vote on not fighting proxy wars that make us less safe as Americans. It's a slippery slope if we want to start deciding what issues actually deserve tax payer dollars with a majority vote. What if a politician decided that spending tax payer dollars on gender reassignment surgeries for prisoners was a good idea? Do we get to vote on that? The corporate donors get more say in how we spend our taxpayer dollars than the people do. The people that work and pay into a supposed Democracy. Corporations are not people. It's a sick idea to suggest that we leave fellow Americans to suffer and drown or starve etc... because they have different beliefs and political differences.

I remember seeing black and white photos of trolley cars in a museum. "That was here?" "Yeah, tire companies bought out the trollies, cut all the cables yanked the entire electric transit infrastructure out." Made me sick, this is early 20th century. They were probably surprised back then (The tire companies) that they could get away with it.

@@jamesadkins1780 and it was beyond flooding. It was catastrophic at least once in a century flooding but possibly unprecedented. The landscape has changed. The road maps will change. That much flooding in higher elevations creates a funnel effect that sweeps through the area below in the form of raging rivers and mud slides. The power of that much water is unbelievable.

The hard truth is that it's insane to keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. The people remain in these areas, their properties are destroyed, they want federal assistance to rebuild, they get assistance, and yet another hurricane comes through and destroys everything all over again. It's tantamount to throwing money into a black hole.
@Greg-io1ip
@Greg-io1ip 7 часов назад
FEMA pays what insurance can't or won't, which means we're all paying regardless where the rebuilding money comes from. There's some places not meant to be lived. These are mostly areas that should only be dry docked houseboats on stilts anchored to the piers with galvanized hoist cable strapping connected to buried concrete pilings cabled together. But no easy ways to keep cars out of the floods. Florida low IQ hurdles are real.
@bobbyc2768
@bobbyc2768 2 часа назад
@@TheRumblewagon By "these areas" idk what you mean, western NC hasn't seen anything like this ever. Look where Asheville is on a map. Florida regularly gets hurricanes, but the houses are built like bunkers down there and don't really get hurt. The real black hole of money is useless foreign wars. Take what we gave Israel in the last year and all these people would be taken care of and there'd be money left over.

I'm from NC (Asheville): it's always been assumed that WNC is not prone to hurricanes (and why this storm took everyone by surprise). When I was in college, we had hurricane Floyd, which really devastated ENC. This was the storm that many are calling of the millennium. A perfect path for a storm to keep dumping water in WNC (causing flooding that sent the crests for the main rivers in Asheville to be 22'). The waters also took out a main East/West highway artery: I-40 on the TN border. From what I'm seeing in Asheville, a lot of businesses have to rebuild from the flooding....and a lot of trees went down on many houses (which was above the flooding). My parents have electricity, water, and limited phone. They're getting sick of the national conspiracy theories being floated around. Especially from the right....but they have reported that they've been impressed by the amount of federal aid being sent to the region (and that FEMA is already estimating property loses for people they know). Luckily also NC has a competent governor, and even GOP Congressmen are saying positive things about the federal response. The one thing this year is showing is that climate change intensifies these storms (especially Milton, gaining a lot of energy from a warm Gulf of Mexico). Now we even have a Congresswoman (who admittedly is a dimwit), that keeps doubling down with conspiracies of these storms being created by government. When it comes to combating climate change: it's not just less dependance of fossil fuels (though that is a factor). Increase of greenhouse gasses is also less absorption by the environment (because of deforestation).

WE'RE ONLY HUMAN... [and PRONE to DENIAL] One should keep this maxim in mind when assessing the "Change in the Weather and the Change in the Sea" and the lack of response when it might have made a difference -- late 1970s and Early-to-mid 1980s. RFK Jr. (among many others) was a voice in the movement toward change, in anticipation of what the World is now facing. A VOICE in the Wilderness. The process has only just begun -- in the manner which Nature Measures TIME. A timely response was squelched by those who would maintain the Status Quo at the expense of Reason. PRACTICED DENIAL bears bitter fruit. Inaction guarantees DISASTER. Will Humans now petition the STARS (our Sun among them) for relief? 👁️१👁️

I've lived in Florida for over 30 years. I moved to North Central Florida in 1995. When I first got there, I was amazed at how cold it got. I never thought Florida had freezes and it was often in the 40s in October at night. Well, temperatures hit 90 at the end of May and are STILL lingering around 88-89. Yet when I mention this obvious thing to people around me, they dismiss it with the glib pabulum that "this is Florida." The other default position to refuse to acknowledge, or God forbid take responsibility for more conscious living (low on fossil fuel usage) they revert to "End Times." So, the merger between the Christian Right and the Libertarians means no regulation that would decrease climate chaos and seeing the effects as God's will. You cannot win with logic or reason. These people are indoctrinated. I just experienced three back-to-back hurricanes and even with Mother Nature sending these signals, "Still don't believe in climate change?" Many will cling to their armed ignorance. For them, there's nothing worse than waking up to the Truth.

It started to include not only the extra manufacturing cost and the quality control costs but also cost of the lost sales and the waste of advertising and marketing when poor quality was made. People would argue that they coud not estimate these costs so they counted them as Zero. Even a rough guess is better than a zero cost. The same should be and probably has been done for petrochemical products we just need to see it.

Building houses to withstand hurricane force winds would not have helped in this storm. There was no bill that would have prevented this. The majority of the damage is from the power of massive amounts of water pouring into rivers that were at flood levels before the storm even hit. Climate change that brings storms like this is irreversible. And this has completely devastated an entire region of the country not just one state. Ironically one of the biggest necessities there now is gas for generators and chainsaws and heavy duty equipment that does not run on batteries or solar power. Gas and propane and atvs and trucks and bulldozers. This country isn't even close to having the infrastructure needed to survive without fossil fuels and building that infrastructure is not gonna be done using battery powered equipment. The trucks that deliver our food and building supplies and stock the Walmarts and Targets and Lowes or what have you cannot run on batteries. I agree that passing the responsibility onto the consumer is wrong. Everything in the grocery store is wrapped in plastic or in plastic containers or plastic bottles etc... There are no comparable affordable options. Economic growth usually looks like bulldozing the natural environment and putting apartments and condos and houses on every square mile a builder or investor can get their hands on. But you're creating jobs. You're stimulating the economy. Importing fossil fuels from foreign countries that drill baby drill is no better than drilling in our own country and at least not relying on countries that don't share any of our morals and values for the energy we need to keep our country and economy afloat. So fossil fuel companies have known about this for 50 years. If they are to blame then they are to blame but then what? Will Kamala Harris declare a climate emergency? Biden was not willing to. Harris' position on fracking doesn't look good from the perspective of climate scientists that are basically in mourning at this point and feel like civil disobedience is their only hope to get governments to see this as the literal threat to all of human existence that it is. There are no easy answers here. The current state of the US government is not capable of turning this problem around any time soon. Then you have China and India and Africa and so on. And of course the growing threat of a nuclear holocaust. Iran is determined to get nuclear weapons and they would not hesitate to use them the first chance they get.

Turns out we have all of these huge trucks driving around polluting the air to pick up our recycle bins and then it's shipped to China or thrown in the ocean or somehow it magically disappears and makes us feel better. But now I'm reading that every person alive has microplastics in their bodies. Apparently Men have microplastics in their testicles now. Fish are creating habitats within plastics in the ocean. It amazes me how slow the US is at looking at other countries and how they prepare for catastrophic cyclones/hurricanes/typhoons. A prime example is the fantastic building standard regulations for ALL construction in the the far north of Australia after a hard won lesson from Cyclone Tracy in 74/75. Areas in Tropical Australia which sees tropical cyclones each year, suffers significantly less damaged than the matchstick construction standards of the tornado/hurricane affected areas of tth US. To quote a famous singing trio - "when wil they ever learn, when willll they everrrr learn".

@MattBuild4
@MattBuild4 7 часов назад
Id argue part of that is because the US gets hit with stronger storms, and in fact tornadoes are exceptionally rare inland in pretty much all of earth except the US and certainly not to the extent that is seen in the midwest. Not to mention especially for tornadoes - there aint a building code standard that is gonna mean a dam thing to F3 and higher Tornado....... Cyclone Tracy had 110mph -178 kwh winds. The Greenfield tornado system that ran through Iowa this year were a series of F4-F5 tornados with wind speeds ranging from 185-318 MPH - 298kmh - 512kmh. Theres a bit of a difference there. You aint staying on the ground with 300 mph wind speeds - I dont care if you encase yourself in a tungsten and concrete bunker - it aint happening.... Little bit of research later -> Its interesting to note that the Australian Cyclone Rating systems lists a Category 5 at anything greater than 123 mph (198kmh). 111-129 mph (178-208 kmh) is listed as a category 3 in the US. Australia has not been hit by a category 5 cyclone since 1989 with Harry. By Comparison the US has been hit by 35 hurricanes with sustained winds above 198kmh since 1989. 11 of these were Cat 5's in the US, which is a storm with sustained winds above 157mph - 252kmh. So again, the US gets hit by way more and way more powerful storms than Australia, which makes sense given the types of storm formations in the Atlantic vs Pacific.

@@peterpawsey4131 So when it comes to cyclones whats the most concerning aspect of the storm for buildings in Australia? Cuz you say matchsticks, but in the gulf of mexico, when the US gets hit with hurricanes, the wind isnt actually the most concerning part.... You go to coastal towns on the gulf like Galeveston Texas and youll see these white rings on the historic brick buildings on the second floor. Its why newer construction are all built on reinforced stilts.... I wonder how many Australian cyclones have produced 3-5 meter storm surges? Cyclone Tracy was only 1.6 meters.
@MattBuild4
@MattBuild4 6 часов назад
@@peterpawsey4131 There are examples of poor construction. A lot of people on the gulf were bewildered when Hurricane Sandy hit New York and people were talking about their basements getting flooded, because on the gulf its preposterous to imagine having a basement while living on the coast. However for the most frequently affected areas in the US storm surge is often the most destructive and deadly aspect of the storm. Now there is truth to poor design being a cause of this, but its moreso area/city planning than housing construction. In many large cities on gulf you have inland ports that 2-5 km from the ocean and then you have these barrier islands directly off the coast. The barrier island get annihilated in these storms, but in major hurricanes the storm surge exceeds the elevation and pushes all of the water up these inland channels into major cities and then there is no where for the water to go. Couple with significant daming of historical rivers and streams and thousands of levees and you get a nightmare scenario where major populated cities are surrounded with tens of millions of liters of water - and everyone drowns.....

Why invest in long term infrastructure if it's all just going to get obliterated in just a couple years anyways. Swamps act as hurricane barriers for inland ecosystems acting as a shield. - harvesting and replacing sand for coastlines (tens of billions of $$) - building Gargantuan hurricane concrete barriers all along coastlines Etc ... Take too long for people interested in short term profits Too much money for anyone to want to shoulder the burden of Too much work and requires ceding some of the land back to nature (those swamps we destroyed and thought was a genius idea to build in top of)...
