Most growers advise people to leave the very base of one or two panicles (with one or two flowers) in situ, otherwise the plant will put out a second flush of flowers thereby weakening itself considerably. The advice is to allow some embryonic fruits to form to say half inch in diameter, then remove the remaining panicles. That should prevent the formation of a second flush of panicles.

I started growing mangos after studies on RU-vid university. I follow truely tropical and man she guided me to tip tip tip as each new branch gives opportunity for flowers. Now I have a Nam Doc Mai with 24 branch tips and they all have flowers in December (some have 3 spikes). My Coconut cream and a Julie followed suit and I see early bloom bud swelling.

I think everybody understand the concept allowing a young grafted mango tree to prioritize growth rather than producing fruit in the first year. The important thing not mentioned is not to remove the flowering bloom too early otherwise the tree will simply push out new flower. Wait until the flower hold fruit and reach about 2 cm in size before removing. In Florida, that would be about early April.

The reason the flower came back again is because you have to wait until flower has fruited to size of bean before removing it. If you remove it before it will continue to grow

Very important video you uploaded, I am glad to see someone that did not fall prey to the urge of letting your young tree produce fruit. When you cut the inflorescence stems, and part of the tip, on your coconut cream, you removed the apical dominance of the tip. this sends the hormones that trigger foliage growth. I recommend you do it to your Kent as well, prune/trim or "tip" the points. to stimulate branching. When someone plants a new tree, they are usually are so anxious to see fruit on it, and will allow the tree to set fruit. the problem with this, is that the tree uses all its energy into fruit production, and will set your tree back a year. in some extreme cases, it can even kill your tree. Unlike trees grown from seeds, grafted trees "think" they are mature. because the scion used to graft them came off a mature fruit producing tree but root system is is still not big enough yet on the seedling rootstock. By the way, I have both Kent and Coconut creme, good choice.

agriperma , Thank u for the great explanation. I have a collection of fruit trees. Many varieties of mangoes as well. Most are 2 to 3 years old, i planted them a few months ago. 2 nam dok mai had already a fruit growing in the pot.. but, i think this time I will cut the inflorescence off indeed. Better to have 4 mangoes the season after.. rather than one this season.. Must i wait for the flower to be out completely? Or can I just 2 months before the flowers will come tip the ends of? It's important for me to know, because I live between Europe and madagascar.. so i won't be there at the moment the flowers start. Thanks
@johnweichselberger314
@johnweichselberger314 6 лет назад
I usually wait until there are tiny "fruits" forming (about pea sized) and remove them. I agree with taking a little "extra" to induce vegetative growth thereafter. You're basically doing something called "tip pruning" or sniping off the terminal ends (where the new buds form) to facilitate the tree to send out new branches thus giving you a nicely shaped tree. Once it gets to a good size it will reward you with a nice bounty of fruits. Good luck!

Cool bananas, thanks for this, very insightful. I have about 40 Tommy Atkins trees planted 2y ago (+2y), highest now about 2m, lowest still 40cm. I'm not commercial, planted them in my yard close to each other & will keep the tress smallish. Also have about 40 papaya trees, 1 fig, lemons, oranges, naartjie, grenadillas & a few strawberry plants. Looking to add chillies now. Thought I was clever & was giving the trees an extra growth chance by breaking the flower buds out... but man, just like your Keitt, I got flowers all over the place, up to 20 flower clusters on my strongest trees. Just chopped them all off now below the original flower bud. Pity about the crown of about 6 leaves I lost per cut, but totally confident it's worth the new growth ! Will update in a month. It's Spring tomorrow so growth season is here... For some weird reason the leaves just under the flower bud sit very close to each other, never noticed it before. That coconut cream sounds like it tastes unreal...if anyone is coming to South Africa and can mule in a couple of buds for grafting, that will be awesome...will scratch back :)

Update: as they already flowered twice, it took about 3 months for new growth to show. Weird situation at the moment, it is before winter, and we haven't had a cold spell up to now, and half my trees are flowering... we are getting an early winter in about 4 days time with -1 Celcius, so I'm cutting those flowers today. Will document.

Those are nice mango trees. Good job and thank you for sharing. If you don't know it yet, the roots of mango trees are known to have surface roots and if they are planted near the fence like you have, overtime, it will push your fence and damage it. So you might want to consider planting them away from your fence or keep them in a big container to control growth. I few years ago, I planted my mango tree about 3 feet away from the fence and it grew so fast then I noticed that my brick fence, like yours, started to crack and pushed out. We found out that the roots of my mango was causing the cracks.

When a mango tree is young, you cut off 2/3 of the flowering pinnacle leaving about an inch on the tree. This causes the tree to redirect its energy into leaf production. Then in about a month you trim off the remaining left over pinnacle. If you cut off the entire pinnacle and flowers, the tree will produce more of them using up energy. Hope this helps.

That CC mango is vibrant. I wonder if just snapping off the flowers on the Kent left some "flowering genetic material" on the branches which told the plant to quickly produce more flowers. As opposed to the cutting off flowers on the CC and the plant thought "Hmm, I don't have any flowering materiel on my branches so I better produce more branches". Just a complete guess on my part.

In the four years that we've grown mango trees, we are finding that they are more of an experimental plant that is fun to try, but we have seen very few thriving, fruiting mango trees in the valley. That being said, between the two options you mentioned, the east side of the house would be ideal unless you have a great microclimate on the southwest side.

They have been in my south facing summer house all summer and now the days are getting shorter and cooling off, have moved them indoors. They were grown from mangos bought from the supermarket so no idea what variety they are, I am guessing that it is ok to treat them the same when flowering for the first time [to remove the flowers] if lucky enough to get them to survive that long during the winter??
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
Yes you can treat them the same way as a grafted mango :) Since yours are seedlings, it could take 5-8 years before they set fruit, so take extra care while they are young to establish a healthy root system and keep them out of the cold! You'll do great :D Thanks for watching!

Wow, you expect mango tree planted from supermarket seed to flower? And in pots? You can wait ten years or above. Good luck. Only the grafted or air layered can flower in large pots. From seeds let it grow 5 meters high to mature in 8 years before you see flowers. That is in warm tropical environment. I grew up with mango trees. I just don't want you to waste your time. You can keep for decoration though.

Each tree produces forty types of stone fruit, of the genus Prunus, ripening sequentially from July to October in the United States like that (we should also do in different types of mango varieties in one plant by grafting?)

Josephine Le Oh duh! :D No we removed them all. We do know some people that have left flower buds on young trees and have gotten 1 or 2 fruits to mature, so it's your call :) Have an awesome day!

So if i try to plant a mango in 6th hardiness zone it's practically impossible to grow it? Maybe there is technology that helps the mango survive cold winters?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
If we lived in zone 6, we would probably still give it a shot, but we are crazy plant people :P The easiest way to grow a mango tree in your zone would probably be to keep it in a pot so you can move it in the house when it gets cold :D

I’m growing two mango trees (in containers) in zone 8 and they’re doing great so far! So I’d give it a shot if I were you. :)
@MCtechh

@@TheCloneGuy97 so in the winter you put them in your house and when its summer, they are outside?
@TheCloneGuy97
@TheCloneGuy97 5 лет назад
Yep! For the winter i keep them under a grow light or next to a window and when we get a random warm day I put them outside. And for spring, summer and most of the fall, they’re are outside full time. The varieties I have are Angie and Nam Doc Mai #4
@MCtechh

@@TheCloneGuy97 do they give fruits, or you don't grow them for fruits? Because I am not sure if it's possible to get fruits from mangoes that are grown in a container. also, if you know, what's the diameter of your containers? And thanks!

What will happen if i left the flowers on a young mango tree?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
The reason we removed the flowers was so that the young tree could focus more on root growth than fruit growth. If you left the flowers on, it may not have caused any problems, but it's never a bad idea to remove flowers from young fruit trees in the future :D
