I've looked at Charkhas many times, so when I was emailed about testing a 3D printed one, I said, "Heck yes, but be aware, it will be a completely honest product review." Then I left it in the package for 7 months for lots of reasons. Here's what I learned trying out this charkha for spinning cotton. You also get to see how I tie a drive band, and lots more interesting stuff and see me try spinning cotton for the first time!

Oh, a tip for keeping the charkha in place while you spin: place a non-slip mat under the charkha. Like one of those dish mats you place in cabinets.

I bought one of these and glued it to a board. I used cotton string for all the whorls. I also added rubber feet to the bottom so it wouldn’t slide around. I did order cotton punies but haven’t spun them yet. Can’t beat the price which is why I decided to try it.

Hi Trish, I hope you're OK and enjoying Rhinebeck. Thankyou so much for reviewing the Charka, I've seen them on RU-vid before but never in Close up detail or explained as well as you have done. Thankyou for sharing this and giving us your Honest opinion on it. Hope you have a Great Weekend. Take care and stay safe. Lots of love Jen 💘💕xxxx

This was a great demonstration. By the way, I had one of those toy looms, and I loved it. It was many years ago, but I've worked on a floor length loom also. I wish I had that toy, now. Really miss it, especially when I look at the prices for just a table loom. Thanks for what you do. Also, if using those heavy rubber bands, the rubber band can be cut along the length, without cutting it in half, and it will have much more expandability, less tension. There is the risk that if it isn't done carefully and there are spurs in the cut, that it will snap. But it would give an alternative to heavy knots.

I have only spun cotton from the seed on a small drop spindle that I used supported. I do plan to see if I can spin it on my EEW 6, I have seen several people say they spin cotton on it. I will not spin from the seed if I do that, obviously, but spinning from the seed is fun and the kids love it at demonstrations.

I actually started out spinning cotton on a book charkha I ordered from India before I got my Sidekick. My first ever fi er was cotton, so everything I've spun after that has been an adventure. I still adore spinning on my charkha and it's super portable so I can take it to the park and spin cotton in the sunshine. It's so nice to see others using them since there are very little resources on how to use them. I learned mostly from trial and error and picture tutorials.

In Peru and Ireland spinning has traditionally been taught to kids starting at 3-5 years old (at least that's what I've heard) so that by the time they're 5-7 years old they are supplying the adults with thread to weave! So the lesson here? Buy this for your kids! 😂

the thing about a book charkha is the smaller main drive wheel. it feels clunky and cheap, unless you use the highest quality solid wood or metal wheel and pulleys... i wish you could spin my franken bike... it's so smooth and swift! the thread is almost dripping from your fingers! My two pennies worth of thinking is: use bigger wheels, be happy.

So glad to see this -- I had seen someone spinning on a real (wooden from India) Charkha and it was really pretty, then I saw the 3D version and had the same thought that it did not look as stable (or pretty) -- then I tried spinning cotton on my Ashford Traditional -- wasn't going to happen. But watching you it made sense how to spin cotton and I too will certainly not pass up a Used Charkha if I ever stumble upon one for a decent (frugal) price. THANKS - very helpful.

Thank you for your honest review. I had seen the 3d printed charkha not too long ago and was interested in it but glad I didn't get any farther. The concept is nifty but it just doesn't seem like it's strong enough. It's just a little too flimsy of a material in my opinion. I like the idea, though. I think it would be cool and more functional if there were a wooden version of the parts in the kit.

Thank You for reviewing this. I have spun cotton, but not on a charkha. It would be fun to have one. I can see that you need the weight of the metal so it doesn’t move around so much as you turn the larger wheel. I remember that the boxes that they come in are also on the heavy side. But, it was very interesting to see! Have fun!! Hope you have great weather & just cool enough to wear knitted items!! Safe journeys!

I have a book charka and it is not heavy. It comes with a piece that you put under a foot (if spinning on the floor) to help stabilize it. I put a couple heavy books on that piece when I used it on a table. Mine came with cotton drive bands.

@genera1013
@genera1013 2 года назад
JillianEve tried one of these out and if I remember correctly she tried wool on it and it worked. I think the main concern is that the charkha provides a lot of twist, which is ideal for cotton as it has shorter fibers. Wool doesn't need as much twist, so it may require some adjustment in how much you spin it.
