For my SL55 AMG, Mercedes-Benz dealers would charge more than 10 times the price of a cheap Jiffy Lube oil change. Here's what you get, and here's how you can save a ton of money - with the same quality - by doing it yourself.
NOTE: I said 25mm oil filter wrench. It should be 74.5mm oil filter wrench. My apologies.

Engineers who deliberately design products to be more difficult to repair and service should be forced at gunpoint to work as a mechanic for a couple of months.

As a former MB Tech, we don't try to justify the price of an A service, we actually justify it by following the relevant maintenance sheet provided by Mercedes specific to your vehicle year and model based on your mileage. Quick tip: next time change the filter before draining the oil as the filter housing will hold up to 0.5 QT of oil as @Everyday Fleet Tech said in the comments below, if not you will create problems, this vehicles are very sensitive. I appreciate people like you who get us a lot of business in the dealership.

It's sad when shops can't look up specs from a VIN, but it happens [to many companies]. Remind me... what the hell was ISO 9000 for again? MB spent all that money on certification costs/maintaining a paper trail and nobody uses it? Wtf. I notice small things, like the shop that put slip additive in my diff fluid after a change on one of my cars - I have an open differential that doesn't need it. Bad management is expensive all the way around.

Difference is one company gets a huge discount and stable long lasting supply which benefits customers as they know what they are getting and Mercedes know what they are supplying. It's still good oil and is just a damn good business model, yes of course as is business logic, the cost is passed to the consumer, it's to be expected. One guys gets two free jugs because he mentioned how he uses it and it's good stuff... Hardly a hypocrite or sell out, why not. If I can save a$40-50 I will. It's still good oil and both the company and consumer benefit. Company gets a mention and consumer gets a break. That's also good business logic. Clueless clowns.

I use a mighty Vac that sucks the old oil out thru the dipstick tube, exactly the way the MBZ dealership does it, I don't spill a drop of oil and don't even get my hand dirty. Okay, changing the filter I might. But the only cost of an oil change, then, is the oil and filter. I wouldn't trust any MBZ dealership to change my oil. I barely would trust them to wash the car! If this issue unfortunately arises, the appropriate legal documentation can be downloaded from the link below. Good video, but you left a few steps out. The oil cap was still on when the filter was taken out which causes the filter housing to retain a lot of oil that isn't drained. You should also change the filter first so that old oil drains into the oil pan and out of the car. The way you did it there was still about one quart of old oil left in the car. You also need to run the car before measuring the oil level as the filter housing needs to be filled.

Hey, great video. I just love these older Benz's. I was an apprentice with Mercedes when this model was launched. A little tip/advice though.......You should remove the filter or at least unscrew the filter unit before dropping the oil. The filter housing holds around 500ml/ 1/2quart of oil in it. Likewise, when you refil you need to start the engine to refil the filter housing before measuring the level. This is why you only needed 8quarts instead of the 9 it should get.👍

Napa charged about 42 bucks for a 5 quart jug. Need 8 quarts. Mann filter cost about 8-10 bucks. Molybdenum is a low friction additive to the oil and Napa actually told me MB recomends it. It's also supposed to be 10k mile oil. I am adding this comment. I hope you see it. My car told me i needed a A service in 3 days and had no idea how to get rid of it. After listening to this video I went out and pulled that message up and hit the reset button and again to say yes to it and it went away. And we also use Motul oil, don't have an issue out of their brand, it works fantastic. And for an "A" Service, we charge $80. "B" Service, we charge $290. Great video, you should have remembered to mention the lines on the new filter. MB design is not the greatest in this area. The filter must be fully seated in the housing so that the line closest to the top of the filter is aligned with the bottom of the filter cartridge housing. Otherwise you can get filter bypass. As you can see, there are two lines on the new cartridge clearly visible at 7:52.

For all those complaining about the lack of a dip stick, there is a very good reason for that. Dip stick readings are notoriously inaccurate depending on oil temperature, car on level surface, engine temps etc. Also you can not check oil level properly with a dual sump setup using a dipstick. The electronic setup is far more accurate and is always checking the level and will warn you if it is too low.

This is the routine I follow when changing the oil in my family's cars (MB, BMW, Mini, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda). Open the oil fill cap, take out the oil drain bolt, let it drain for 5-10 mins, crack open the oil filter (if you loosen it up too early oil will spill all over your engine and your driveway), let it drain for 30 mins while I grab a beer and smoke a cig. Then replace the oil filter, screw back the oil drain bolt, fill the correct amount of oil, idle the engine for a few minutes and recheck the oil level. So damn simple.

With 9 qts, I could do an oil change for about $35, including the filter. I use Walmart Supertech "full" synthetic. Good enough. I have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with about 100,000 miles more than your Mercedes. I use Ford Motorcraft filters (because they are the only ones you can get a socket for, and you cannot get a strap wrench on the filter in the stock location) and 6 qts. of Walmart Supertech 10w30 "full" synthetic. (Yes it calls for 5w20, but it has 250,000 miles of wear, meaning looser clearances, so the heavier oil works better) I have owned this car since 47,000 miles, I change the oil every 3,000 miles, and I expect to get well over 300,000 miles out of the engine. An oil change costs me $25, and takes about 15 minutes to do. Firestone wanted $77. That's enough for THREE oil changes. When the engine/transmission/other expensive parts wear out, I may just replace them, since they don't make large, comfortable, RWD, body on frame, V8 powered, solid rear axle cars like this anymore.

The recommended Mobil 1 0W40 is a very very good oil. I can't recommend it enough. I've studied mechanical engineering (specialized in automotive technology) here in Germany and we've done a lot of test series with different engine oils. Some findings where so bad that the manufacturer sued the faculty to remove the data from public access and said we must've tested counterfeit products (which was not the case) In the case of Mobil 1 it's not just that they bought their way in with the car makers and the customer gets recommended a subpar product because of that. A good example of that scenario would be some Castrol products. That particular MOTUL you have is also a very good oil. I do all the work on our cars myself at a good friends car repair shop and he has 60litre barrels and only uses MOTUL products. I put this oil in my dads car since it was brand new. He drives a lot so I have to change every 2 months which equals around 12k km. That car has 700.000km and never had any issue with the engine. It even has the first turbocharger. MOTUL has some incredible ester based oils which are worth mentioning as well. What I can not recommend is 5W30 of any sort in combination with ridiculous 30-40.000km intervals. It's not the engineers that recommended these intervals it's more the management side. Like hey competitor ABC has a xy km interval, how much can we stretch it without it causing problems during warrantytime. It's a good selling point if you can say the car only needs half or a third of the services compared to a competitor and that's the only reason for the high intervals. I've seen countless problems with this combination. These engines get completely dirty and sludged inside causing a lot of problems...any experienced mechanic can attest to that...

hi friend, Which oil is better, Motul X-Cess 5w40 or Mobil 1ESP 5w30 for 2005 VW Jetta 1.6 petrol engine? Have you tested them? My car is 200k km. I have been using Motul X-Cess 5w40 for the last 4 changes. But, lifter voice started in the engine. So, I changed the lifters. During the change, we saw lots of oil sludge. The older owner had used Castrol Magnetec 10w40 during the first 120k km. Is it the reason of oil sludge? or motul causes it? what do you thing? Some mechanics say mobil 1 esp keeps engine cleaner than other oils. what is your opinion?

A small tip as you do your own oil changes, submerge the filters in oil for a while to reduce the risk of sudden oil pressure arrival at the filter bursting it. Spin-on types with housings can be filled up and element types submerged in a clean container. Loving the DIY attitude!

@jarvistarry
@jarvistarry 6 лет назад
To start with, there's a big difference between an "A service", and an "oil cange", especially for an AMG vehicle. The 2 sump plugs is a known thing with the SL 55 with the 113 engine, no secrets there. When you pay for a Service A, you pay for a full beake check, including a check of the SBC braking system (important detail)...this is prescribed by Mercedes-Benz, and not the dealer! Plus your AMG is cleaned inside and out, when you pick it up. The stamp in your service book/ digital service book, means you qualify for Mercedes' Mobilo roadside assistance program for free- great peace of mind! All this work performed by a certified Mercedes tecnician- instead of a fool in a shed that pretends to know better! And any other questions you have regarding telematics, comfort or safety related equipment can be answered at the same time! And by the way...the fool in the film replaced his oil filter (with a non - genuine article) AFTER he changed the oil...the vacuum in the oil filter chamber retains up to a half liter of oil, which will remain in the engine, which means you don't cange the full 8.5lt oil!!- Again, this is prescribed by Mercedes-Benz! Your AMG is a highly specialised vehicle, leave it up to the specialists to look after it! (...And yes, I am a certified AMG Service Expert, trained in Affalterbach, with 15 years of Mercedes-Benz experience! )

as an mb tech, i understand his astonishment but when it comes to these vehicles they can be highly sensitive, amg’s on some variants require to drain oil from the oil coolers, replace seals, they take way more oil. also the amg’s today that have dry sump motors (no oil pan) have an exact way of performing an oil change or these values will be wrong and display a message or fault, you’re not just paying for an oil change, you’re paying for the best. it’s a status to drive these cars, an accomplishment. the services he talks about are completely wrong we don’t just put “spark plugs in cause it needs it”, we go by your general history and mb’s recommend services by age and/or mileage and advise you what your car needs currently safety and maintenance

Well if you do your own work that wouldnt be an issue... And im not suprised lots of millionaires own a camry because most of them likely pay someone to do their maintenance so its a nice inexpensive option for someone that isnt really an enthusiast, the 2018s for example are a beautiful bang for your buck, but you pay for what you get and doing your own work will save you a fortune. And german automakers like bmw and mercedes produce incredible motors for example the inline 6 platform from bmw that has been used since the 30s, or even the bmw 801 used in fw190s during ww2. Not everyone buys sports cars for status/having peoples attention..

My rule of thumb is: if you want it and can afford it, buy it and enjoy it. Not everyone is living paycheck to paycheck. Some of us prefer to drive solid, well built, well weighted cars than be surrounded by cheap plastic interiors that rattle and creak after 3000 miles. My E-Class has 40,000 miles and has not one rattle or creak. And no structural issues. My doors are heavy. I pay more for maintenance. But the trade off is a great solid, quiet ride.

A topsider oil pump is a great DYI method for changing the oil. Since the oil filter is on top there is no reason to go under the car. "Yes." Top siders get 'all' of the oil out. I have used this method for 10 years on a BMW Z3 and for 3 years on a MB SL550. Zero oil related problems on either car. I've been told that this is the way most MB dealers do it.

If you did the oil change per the manual you would not even be under the car. You use a vacuum evaluator and ‘suck’ it out through the oil dip stick. Remove the oil filter when evacuating and continue till no more oil comes through the hose. Actually removes more oil than draining through the drain plug. That’s why when you buy the filter ‘kit’, it doesn’t include the drain plug seal washer.
