6 years ago I did a wet transmission fluid change on my 1998 Toyota. I dropped the pan and replaced the filter assembly and added semi-synthetic and a 12x12 transmission cooler along with a trailer hitch. Then I hitched a trailer to my Sienna and pulled 4x the trailering capacity from Philadelphia to the Jersey coast 3 times. If I went faster than 40mph I could not stop, the brake fade shook and shuttered the control arm bushings the more I stood on the brake peddle. Thank God that section of New Jersey is flat as Floriduh. Fast forward to today and 50k additional miles, my Sienna still shifts and pulls anything I hook up to my hitch.

I have to disagree with Scotty on this one. I have had three vehicles which developed hard shifts. Two Fords and a Lexus. Changing the fluid cured this problem on every one. I do hear that changing the fluid in cars with too many miles can cause problems. However, I did it on the Lexus LS400 at about 185k and it fixed the hard shift. Now at 315k and the transmission still shifts smooth as butter.

To save an old rear wheel drive automatic transmissions, you can gradually change the fluid one quart at a time for 12 to 15 months.(Depending upon the volume of fluid the transmission has) After that long use, you can change the whole fluid and filter and then change fluid and filter every 30,000 miles. If the old transaxle is front wheel drive and slips, your car is doomed for a complete replacement or repair.(Including converter, mounts, bearings,, bushings and CV joints). Thanks

Changing the trans fluid wont hurt, it can only help, or do nothing. Back in the early 90's Shops were doing what's known as a "dynamic flush" of the transmission, it was done using a machine with the vehicle off, the flush machine forced fluid under pressure to remove old fluid. This method when used on neglected high mileage transmissions could dislodge sludge, or wedge check balls in the valve body , which would prevent shifting. A "passive flush" is done with the car running in park, you capture the old fluid on its way to the cooler (radiator) while replacing the fluid down the dip stick tube. I've done many passive flushes on 100k+ mi vehicles without issue.

I've done this many times as well, BUT if the transmission is already slipping doing this will make it slip continuously as the clutches were already worn. My 03 Civic EX 4 speed gave out immediately after a transmission fluid drain/refill at 287k miles. I followed the manufacturer recommended ATF replacement cycle from new. It is true: changing transmission fluid can destroy your transmission... especially if it hasn't been done on a regular schedule!!!
@rickkimmins4578
@rickkimmins4578 3 месяца назад
High temperatures in transmissions leads to fluid life destruction ( thermal break-down ). I only use Amsoil transmission fluid ( superior thermal stability ). Misconception is old fluid has 'fines' which aids in transmission grip and sometimes shifting - FALSE. I prefer clean fluid over dirty. Gravity drain, never flush. I have never had a transmission failure with Amsoil on transmissions with over 130k, 250k....still going strong. I've even made several drains after filter change and adding a drain plug to the transmission pan. Universal drain plug.

NIce! What year and make is your car? What is the diff between a flush vs a drain?
@rickkimmins4578
@rickkimmins4578 2 месяца назад
Primarily Ford and Honda products. Drain is typical, remove the pan and filter and let the fluid drain out. Flush is supplying new fluid under pressure via a pump and can stir-up fines and contaminants. Gravity drain is best.

My 2015 4Runner is nearly 150K and I'm considering changing my transmission fluid. There are strong opinions for both options. There is no problem with the transmission and that is exactly why the advice is that it is still safe to replace without problems. But that it will lengthen the life of the transmission. I am planning on keeping this vehicle a very very long time.

I had a 2002 Nissan Sentra and the trans was slipping - I took it to a dealership where a friend of mine works as a Service Manager and asked him if I needed a new (rebuilt) transmission; he told me if I needed a (rebuilt) transmission it would be $1,800 and I would have remove the trans and deliver it to him (core) and they would send it out to be rebuilt; he then told me to spend a hundred bucks to have the trans oil, filter and screen replaced - I listened to him and VIOLA - it worked, the trans DID NOT SLIP after that and I drove the Sentra another 30,000 miles (total of 175,000 miles) before my son wrecked it.

My Kia Forte had 240K when I let it go. I did buy it new and maintain it well. I felt like it still had many miles to go. The reason I got rid of it was because I was rear-ended, and it caused water leakage into my trunk. The insurance company blamed it on the previous rear-end. After a few failed remedies, I decided to let it go.

I changed my fluid and filter at 301K miles on my 2006 Charger SXT. Sure, there was a lot of friction disk powder in the bottom of the pan. Sure, it takes about 3 seconds to shift from reverse to drive, but it still works fine. I should have changed it when I bought the car. It had 223K highway miles. I guess the original owner never had the fluid changed.

I've always been leery of trans fluid changes and transmission shops in general. Three times I've had fluid changes that ended with a transmission failure a few months later. I'll do it if the fluid or shift behavior changes, but if it's clean and red and shifting is fine, I'll leave it alone! Regrading transmission shops, the very first one I went to as a teenager ripped me off. I lost the 1984 Grand Nationals at Detroit Dragway because the transmission shop put the governor snap ring on backwards and it popped off in the quarter finals. I had a 1986 Dodge Colt Vista that lost the fifth gear overdrive (vacuum solenoid operated), the shop failed to fix it several times, and I had to write a three page letter explaining how to fix it properly. Me and transmission shops do NOT get along! Regarding most satisfying rides, I have a shocker: It's a former show car with a good looking body kit, the frame sits lower than a Corvette, has a VERY comfortable leather/suede interior, the HVAC system is far better than any of our Hondas have been, it handles hard cornering very well with 51/49 weight distribution, it delivers 338hp on the dyno and 13.5@104mph at the track, has 240,000 miles on the original engine and trans, and... it's a PT Cruiser. Now, our Hondas are fine and work well, but the interior is lower quality, they have NO low end torque except for the VTec V6, and that engine died at 186,000 miles. Now, I do enjoy our 1970 Karmann Ghia with it's balanced and blueprinted 1.6L (built that one myself), but it's not practical for many reasons, and I sure can't pickup the kids in it!
